No LCD screen

I have an older Sony,Cybershot P52. I am able to use the view finder to take pictures, but not the LCD screen, which shows nothing but a gray band across a black background. Batteries are charged, tried new memory stick, but still no LCD screen. Any ideas?

I'm thinking it's probably shot. I think it would be pretty expensive to fix.
You might have to just get along with the viewfinder or get a new camera.

I was afraid you were going to say that, Joan! I do have another camera, so it's no biggie. I just hate to have it be a disposable. Thanks anyway.

A service contract essentially is an insurance policy, with you guessing that you'll need to spend more in repairs than the service contract costs. They typically are huge moneymakers for the companies offering them. Your best bet is to get a copy of the service contract and find out what it covers and what it does not cover. If your TV is likely to be a victim of abuse from kids or pets, see if that kind of damage is excluded. Find out if the service is in your home or if you have to truck the TV to a service facility -- and find out where they are. Find out if there are odd requirements like annual inspections or other likely exclusions (lightning damage, etc.). Then take the warranty that comes with the TV anyway and figure out what the service contract adds. Frankly, I've never had one on which I made out. So I tend not to buy them anymore. Oh, and BTW, this may be too late for you if you walked out of the store with the TV, but your cost for a service contract is negotiable. See if they'll offer it to you for less or even throw it in.

Chisue, I came *that* close to buying the Visio 26" over the Black Friday for $200, since my 23 year old LXI is starting to have tuner problems (what a great set it has been!). I decided to make do with my daughter's old 19" for a while. Glad to see your comments. I had read that the Vizios had tinny sound in several reviews. Plus I just grit my teeth at the thought that the new set will probably only last 5-10 years. Well, I need to remind myself that the new sets are proportionally much cheaper to buy, too---I paid $199 for that LXI in 1987 and it was a fab bargain at that price. CR rates JVC and Sony as the most reliable in the larger sizes, and Sanyo as a best buy. Unfortunately as has always been the case, they don't really look at the smaller and less expensive models.

The current best and biggest flat panel LCD screens are the 55" Samsung 950 series and the 55" Sony XBR8 series . Sharp offers a 65" LCD , but nobody is calling the picture quality on that set anywhere near top quality with it's poor shadow detail . In flat panel screen sizes 60" or more plasma is still the way to go for best picture quality with Pioneer , Panasonic , and Samsung being the top rated models respectively .

Last year I tried all over my city to find a camera repair shop. There was none. All I could do was send it back to Kodak with $181 to have it fixed. After awhile I fiddled with everything on it and it started working. Yes, they are disposable. I'll never buy another expensive one.

Sometimes it's just something little, like resetting the LCD ribbon inside
the camera. Have it checked out and see how much it would be.
Try this first... give it a good knock in the palm of your hand, or push with
fingers.....well read below, not sure if your camera has the white screen,
if you have, then this might fix it?

Thanks for the link, Konrad, but I've tried all the hints, and it still doesn't work. So I think I'll just take it in and get an estimate.

Phyllis, I suspect the cost of repair will be close to (or even exceed) the price of a new camera. That's what I hear, anyway. Of course, I'd want a new one no matter what. :-)

I got this Sony when they were still quite expensive; I have a Canon that I bought last year, paying about half the price of the Sony, and it has a much larger optical lens, and large LD screen, so will use that more often. Thanks for the info, everyone.
