Need to find a home for a pregnant cat near Indianapolis

A little (tiny) black female stray that is pregnant has adopted the side of our house to make her home recently.

We have 5 cats inside so can't keep her so desperately want to find a home for her before she has kittens!!!! I think she is ready to have them w/in the next week or two.

I know NOTHING about pregnant cats and cannot bring her inside. There is a neighborhood dog that gets out all of the time and has killed 3 cats so far. I don't want her or her kittens to be next!!!

Anyone near Indianapolis (I'll drive!!!!) willing to take in this sweet little female and her (soon to be) kittens?

HELP!!!!

PS No, I'm not going to take her to the shelter. They are overflowing and putting cats down left and right.

Look for cat rescues in your area. Also, if she isn't too far along, a vet can spay her, even though she is pregnant. No, the kittens won't make it, but it is easier than trying to find homes for 7 cats instead of 1. No flaming on this subject, please, it is just an option.

I believe I already wrote this but she is going to have the kittens in the next week or two so that isn't an option.

I've tried every rescue I can think of but they are all full.

I'll continue to hope that I find a home for her.

It has been my experience (lots, LOL) that Mrs. Kitty will have her babies in a secluded spot, probably NOT one that you've fixed up for her. If you want her to have them inside, set up a cardboard box with some old towels in guest bedroom closet or some such, where human traffic is minimal and she feels like she's in a hiding place. Even the most tame cat will (usually, not always) want this type of arrangement. A friendly, affectionate kitty will want some of her own time with the babies and will introduce them in her own time. I've found if I leave them alone and don't touch them for several weeks, Momma is much happier and the kittens seem to socialize better with us. I admire them and pet momma, but I don't pick up the babies. I think it stresses the mom out even if she loves and trusts you. So Momma is happy with your admiration for a job well done, and when Mommas happy...you know the saying :) Last year when we had kittens, the neighbor children all flocked over to play with them. I showed them the kittens and asked them not to pick them up just yet, that they needed time with their mother. Once the kittens were motoring around and seeking attention from me, I let the kids play with them. It is a little more tricky to have the kittens outside but if you fix a nice box in the garage or barn and have food/water handy, she might just go to it if you keep showing it to her by placing her in the box. In a pinch she will have the kittens in the box then probably move them to an area where the other cats don't frequent. Mine moved their kittens into the eves of the garage until they were moving around and I kept placing them down in the box because I was afraid they would fall. Normally, it's very hard to get an adult cat even in the door of a rescue group, due to long waiting lists, if they even do waiting lists. However, I think this is a perfect situation for a rescue group. It sounds terrible and cynical, but this is the kind of story they love to play up. The worse off the animal or the surrendering owner is, the more likely they are to take the animal in and promote it on t.v. or where ever they do their promotions. There's a shelter in my area that's big on this kind of thing. So, in this case, there's a high likely-hood of a shelter taking the cat in and finding a good home for the kitty. The benefit of going through a shelter is that they usually screen the adoptees, and do their best to make sure the pet goes to a good home. Flyers posted around can invite anyone, and believe me, you don't want this cat going to just anyone. "Just anyone" can include laboratories, people that want barn cats, etc. I was at a rescue event one day when a mother came in desperately wanting to take a kitten home with her right then and there. The group had a kitten that looked just like her kitten that got out and was run over by a car while the child was at a friend's. The mother wanted to replace the kitten before the child returned. I got one of my best cats ever from a family with 2 kids, he wasn't getting attn either. Kazoo was the Mom's college cat & was about 12 yrs old when I took him. I lived next door & agreed to take him on a trial basis. Every time I visited their house, he'd come running out of a closet or something to me. What was I going to do? He claimed me. He was an awesome cat, I enjoyed him until he was approx. 18 yrs old when he got very ill & left us for the rainbow bridge. Be picky in who takes your cat, I hope for her sake you find someone who can give her love & attention. It's very hard to find homes for cats, please please be sure she goes to a person who'll keep her forever.

the only "common" herbicide that can behave that way is imazapyr (i.e. move from roots to adjacent roots) I've done something similar many times with poison ivy or other vines with either glyphosate or triclopyr (or 3 way) and the non-target species were fine. Once I just painted a huge, hairy 4" PI trunk with 3 way mixed with a bit of dish soap, and it died completely. This was after chainsawing the top of it while wearing a full respirator and eye protection. (with the chain motion spinning away, of course) I then cleaned the chain by rinsing some LV naphtha over it, into my home heating oil tank! Where the concentrated uroshiol all got burned, I hope...anyhow I never got any form of the rash or lung irritation. There's one mistake to your approach. 1/2 minute could work with the right herbicide and surfactant, but much better is to weigh down a container and stick the main stem in there for a full 24 hours. Or if you worry about leaving it overnight because of some miscreant coming by and knocking it over, at least a few hours while you are on-site. This summer I killed some horrid Smilax vines by dipping the overturned stems in a test tube of conc. 41% roundup during a dry spell, and taping it back to the base of the vine. Because it was dry they drank it all up overnight.

Indeed you did say that, but you said you "think" she was due, not that she was definitely due, so I didn't know you were an expert and I made that suggestion. My apologies.

I would still get her to a vet to get her cared for before she has the kittens, the vet might have options for the cat and her kittens once they are born. And at least you will know what kind of shape she is in physically when you find a home for her, there will be no surprises for the new family. They would need to know if she is FIV positive or has heartworms or other possible problems. It will be easier to find homes for guaranteed healthy kittens than ones you aren't sure about.

I'm not claiming to be an expert but I caught her in the act w/ a few neighborhood toms and did the math. I am guessing that her due date is coming at that time but I could be completely wrong.

Good idea on getting her to a vet. I really don't have the money to invest in her but agree w/ what you are saying.

I already have drama going on w/ a .10 huge bluegill out of my pond that has now crept up to being my almost 50.00 bluegill so why not throw some money out the window on a stray cat too??? lol

Call the vet, explain the situation; they may be able to cut you some slack with this since it really isn't your cat. Also, the Humane Society can help give her a check up at a discounted cost.

How about feeding the cat the fish? That would save you some money for cat food!!! JK!!! ;-) Seriously, best of luck with kitty and your fish.
