My neighbor died

He was 44 years old, and he was just found dead. Someone went to find him because he didn't show up somewhere as expected, and they saw him dead through a window. As far as anyone knew, he was very healthy, except for a "bug" he had last week. Nobody, including him, thought he was severely ill. He was the cousin/best friend to someone I know well. They're doing an autopsy. He left behind a wife and four kids.

If you can wait a month or more, why not wait? It obviously does not bode well that it is taking so long to leaf out but give it TLC and see what happens. Provide appropriate moisture but do not overdo it so it develops root rot. And later in Spring when all nearby plants begin to leaf out, use weak fertilizers only like liquid fish or liquid seaweed. At that same time, you can prune dead wood by scraping the stems with a finger to see if they are dead or not.

When our son and granddaughter died I was struck by the kindnesses of people who were virtual strangers to me. While the "if I can ever do anything..." rarely gets people to ask you for things, I agree that a gift of food, cake, brownies, cookie, freezable casserole and a card would be nice. All you need to do is hand it to them. I would ask you to bring it in a disposable container and make sure they know it's not to be returned. Often returning creates a hardship in itself. The things that you will accomplish is having them know they have your sympathy and that you know what happened, saving them awkwardness should they ever casually run into you.

About 1/4 of my neighbor's conifers on his tree farm died over winter.

Ken, the subject line on here didn't allow for too much description of the kind of farm he has. Yes, it is his Christmas Tree farm. He has Frasier fir, Grand fir, Concolours, as well Blue Spruce trees. I didn't walk onto his property and look at the trees, I just took a look out of a window of one of our guest bedrooms, as it gives a great view of his Christmas tree farm, to see how his trees handled the winter, and saw so many of them are bright orange. I know a lot of people around here wrap their conifers that they have in their yard. This guy has thousands of trees so that really isn't an option. I thought an orange conifer was a dead conifer? I apologize if I am wrong that his trees are goners. I hope, for his sake, they rebud.

I'm sorry to hear this, Susan.

That happened to my elderly neighbor years ago. We noticed her newspapers were gathering on the porch for a few days; she was fastidious, so this was odd. We called the police, they went in and found the wife sitting peacefully in her chair, hands folded in her lap. Her disabled husband had crawled from his room to her side, and was still alive! He lived several months in a nursing home, never said another word.

At least my neighbors didn't leave a young family. Your neighbors may need a little help from you for a while.

I'm curious what the autopsy will reveal. I hope you post back with the results. A local news reporter was feeling poorly, passed out at work the one day and then about a week later was found dead by her caregiver. She was handicapped after a swimming accident. She refused to see a doctor after the incident. As I recall she was in her late 40s. Strange things.

It's always sad when someone dies 'young'. We're not used to it. Our grandparents were not surprised as much by death. It happened frequently -- to babies, young children, middle aged people. It comes as a shock to us now when someone young dies a natural death (not accident, war, suicide).

I'm so sorry. My friend Shirley's son died suddenly at a young age. The autopsy showed he had a virus that somehow migrated to his heart and killed him without warning.

Now some people are saying it was suicide. That would be so tragic! I hope it's not true, because it would be even more awful for the family. It would also be very weird, because it would mean there was a suicide three houses to the east of me and three houses to the west of me.
