appliances sticking out from cabinets

After appliance shopping, I realize that my over the range microwave will be sticking out at least two inches from the cabinets. Also, the slide-in range will, too. Does that bother anyone else? I would love everything to be flush, but I guess that's not gonna happen..

My slide in range does stick out a bit. Thought that it would bother me, but it is still quite integrated looking, so it doesn't. The fridge, on the other hand, was another story....

I have a pro range and it sticks out. I thought it would drive me crazy, but it doesn't. Never even notice it.

I agree that the fridge sticking out would be an issue.

Hi Justmake it, the kitchen isn't huge! It's just that the space where I'd use them is on the opposite end of the kitchen! It's 10x16 :) I suppose I could lug them from the pantry and use them more nearby but that would mean displacing the coffee setup. I'm pretty happy with my current storage. There are some things I'd do differently now that I've lived with it for a bit. Adding this new 6 ft run of cabinets should offer me lots of additional storage. I've got a butcher block table there now and It basically only houses my microwave, toaster oven, stand mixer and a small stack of bakeware. I'm thinking the new stretch will have two doors and behind them I'll have microwave, toaster oven, kitchenaid and maybe some other small appliances on pull outs. I'd also like to have three drawers the top one I'm thinking about storing my knives in so I can ditch the block on the counter. The lower two I'm thinking about making more customized for my cookware. That would make it behind the range which might not be completely ideal. I've got a cabinet with pullouts next to the range but it doesn't completely accommodate my cookware and I don't really enjoy undoing and redoing a stack of cookware everytime I want to use them. I'm thinking of making this more for large items like dutch ovens and pressure cooker and putting more of the pots and pans in the new stretch. I'm also thinking of adding toe kick drawers. I almost never bake so it'd be great to have a place to put the muffin tin and loaf pan, etc. If anyone has any advice for planning all this out I'm very open. I'll likely be building this myself so I'll take any thoughts happily!

inset cabinets - dishwasher sticking out?

We have a Bosch with inset cabinets and while it extends beyond the cabinet frame, I don't think it looks odd at all. I never even thought about it until reading your post. I know that feeling of wanting to verify and see something when an expert you are paying is telling you to do something different, and just wanting to make sure that what you choose will fit well in the overall look. Honestly, this one is such a minor thing, and I am sure that no one will notice it at all. You have to decide if it will bother you, but I'd personally rather have the overhang. I have 1 1/4" overhang and the door of the DW sits flush with the edge of the granite. (I just looked at the specs and the DW itself is not as deep as the cabinets so it must be pulled out to sit that way.) This is the best I can do for pics right now. Hi bbs_homeshop! This is an issue that you will need to consider, both in the cabinet and the countertop next to it. We resolved it in a simple way that a lot of people do when they have professional style ranges, by bumping out matching size cabinets out next to the range 1-1/2" - 2". The simplest way to do it is just to screw a piece of 2" x 4" behind the cabinets and then attach your cabinets to it. Then, it is nice to have the self edge of your counter near the leading edge of the top of the range that sticks out further, so it isn't a hip bumper. You'll notice that the self edge cuts back at a 45 degree angle at the next cabinet. Does Rangetops stick out too much on cabinets?

I alter granite countertops and cabinets for appliance changes regularly. It isn't a big deal. If you called me, I would insist the rangetop be on site before I arrived. This is so we can both see it is installed properly when I leave. I no longer take manufacturer's dimensions as gospel; that's an unpaid callback. Last two paragraphs, please.

It sounds like your cabinets aren't installed yet. Can you shim out the base units, at least, a bit? (Your counter will be deeper.)

I am considering doing just that since the range we're getting is one of those extra-deep pro-style ones. Anyone done this with the deeper ranges? I am not going to make it flush, just so that there's a, maybe, 1" protrusion rather than 3"!

A word of warning though: I did that in our last house for the slide-in electric range we had. We used formica counters, and didn't take into account that the edges alongside the range also needed to be nicely finished. With the oven door closed, it all looked fine, but once you open the oven door you can see an inch or two of the unfinished inside edge of the counter. We had to retrofit it with a strip of formica that never looked exactly right. Obviously, with granite this would not be a problem!

It's a safety feature for the range to be deeper than the base cabinets. The door of the range can "leak" hot air if the gasket becomes old and worn, and if that's next to a wood surface, it can be a fire danger during a self clean cycle. Some MW's are designed to use that extra 3" in depth to conceal their "recirculating" vent. Instead of blowing back in your face, they blow it out the top towards your cabinet. Most fridges doors won't open unless the door is able to stick out in front of the cabinets. Even "built in" fridges some times have this issue.

If having a truly flush built in look is important, you can get a fully integrated fridge, and a cooktop, and a hood liner for inside an upper cabinet. Wall ovens will still protrude slightly from their cabinets though.

The top portion (where knobs are) of my slide in range protrudes about 2" from the cabinets & oven door is about 1.5" out -- sounds worse than it looks. It actually looks appropriate. The fridge protrudes about 6". The refrigerator cabinet was supposed to be pulled forward more, but because of a structural issue, the cabinet had to be mounted differently or it would have increased our installation costs too much. However the fridge really looks fine too--it fits next to a wall that is the same depth.

This is my second kitchen renovation and the things I think would drive me crazy... I don't even notice. Enjoy. Live. We all have to stop obsessing.

My range is a little proud. Wall oven will be flush. I am a bit worried that the refrigerator will not be flush..... we'll see. It will bother me a lot if it is proud, but I'm not sure there is much we'll be able to do about it.

My fridge stuck out 9 inches or something awful in a small, tight kitchen. Since it was a new fridge, I was able to send it back and bought a counterdepth.
