Hi Scottfsmith You are welcome, i decided to give you adress of boo so you can read it. Person who wrote that book work in Georgia, U.S.A. so i think he wrote peach varieties in commercial aspect in mind. Commercial production in mind i meant. You mentioned that his view are pretty narrow what a peach should taste like, i think you might be right on that one. Maybe he put some effort thinking peaches as a commercial crop, that way making money growing peaches. I think growing peaches as person and commercial is little different. In commercial way, you need to take so you can hava crop every year and so on. People in garden may want have good taste peach. You said also he doesn't like some of thoe ones I think are the best, you are in Maryland, U.S.A. and people who wrote that books is in Georgia, U.S.A. i think there is some differencies on weather on those places. Also there is differences on light conditions on those places, which might have influence on taste of peach. I think book mentioned some of peach varieties have been good for northern U.S.A., which he didn't like. Looks like you got it right. Sorry for that link puts that page so that you might scroll left to right to read book. Second after "This page is appendice which have Elberta peach variety ripening dates for different location, Breeders, number of trees planted by region, index peach varieties from part 1 and peach varieties catogorized by chilling requirement, flesh color and ripening date. This appendice have pages 731-808." i forgot to add words before giving link here is the link :

I think part of it is where they are grown. The Rainer here are much better than the dark. They certainly are not soft either. Of course they also are far from being ready this year. So that also might have something to do with it. Many are just forming at this point. Something also is I have never seen a nectarine flavored anything. Cherry on the other hand. That really doesn't say anything, but to me cherry flavor cannot be beat. I'm going to have to fed-ex you some of our rainier, so you can make a comparison. It may just be me. I do also like nectarines. A good nectarine is awesome, like they say apple and oranges, I can't really say I like them better. or worse, they are so different from cherries. I do though like that cherry flavor even bad ones. Cornelian cherries, red currants, etc are my fav kinda fruits. Sort of taste like tart cherries. You seem to have a finer palate than me, it's hard for me to distinguish at times. I also love hot peppers, the hotter the better! Probably burned out my taste buds long ago!

Oh, I forgot to mention that orig owner said tree is 10 yrs old,,don't know variety,,also had what I interpreted as peach curl that didn't do anything about since didn't know what it was,,bore good fruit, but not every year. 1/Thinking that planting second tree for "insurance" is good idea. DO YOU THINK RAINTREE NURSERY IS GOOD FOR BAREROOT TREES? Reading lots of posts last night. 2/Can I do any preventative things to stop any peach borer or that gel moth from every happening? 3/Regarding the little tree that maybe rootstock...can I find out by digging between the 2 trees since only 3 ft apart, to see if any root links them? Trying to see ASAP if that baby tree should be pulled out since it is multi-trunked etc. Could I put new tree in that hole (or big tree hole if doesn't pan out) while waiting the 2-3 yrs after serious pruning to see if it will bear any decent fruit? That way by the time I know I can already have another on the way. Is it bad to replant a 2-3 yr old nectarine/peach (newbie tree) should this main one fizzle out? Just thinking outloud and know you guys are much better at this in real life than anything I could read from previous posts or in books. Thanks again, Nicole
