Most useful size/shape for prep sink?

I've never had the luxury of a secondary sink, so I'm not sure which direction to go. I know I want a SS undermount TIcor sink, but I don't know if I should be looking at square ones, D-shaped ones, or a circular one. This sink will probably get pretty heavy use, and whatever I get has to fit into a 24" base cabinet.

I'd love feedback about this! :o)

Personally, I like my square one...15-3/4" square. However, I think any shape will work well as long as it's at least 12" in each direction...bigger if at all possible. For me, the 15-3/4" is just big enough, I wouldn't want to go any smaller. BTW...my sink would fit in an 18" sink base. (It's in a 36" corner sink base, though, since it's in the corner b/w my cooktop & peninsula.)

I have a teensy vessel sink. Mine is 12 inches across. Though everyone said such a small sink wouldn't be practical, it's wonderful. Mine is mostly for prepping fruits and veggies, so I tried to think of the biggest produce I would want to wash--i.e., broccoli, honeydew. Mine is great. Watermelon is the only thing I might have to wash in the sink, but usually I buy the small melons, so I'm not worried about that.

LL - I agree - that's a beautiful sink. I was able to find the sink via the House Beautiful article - best price was $807, so I'll have to continue looking. I do like the look of the copper. Bri - you're correct, breezy's silgranit does look gorgeous - I was a little concerned that switching materials (main sink is stainless) might seem a little odd - I've already bought my stainless main sink. Shelayne - yours looks beautiful in your island. I love the edging - I haven't seen anything like that. Who did that? Is yours a top mount just lowered or undermount? Do you have any problems with water collecting around the rim. It's very unique looking - Someone has great design skills :)

I think round looks way cool, but doesn't give as much open sink space as you can get in a cabinet, so bigger sink beats way cool look. Ours is almost square and about 14 1/2 x 16" or so...I wouldn't want smaller and kept it to that since our island is only 4' x 5', with the narrower direction facing the stove...Didn't want to use all the prep space with sink. If I had a 6 ft or more island, with the long side facing the stove, I'd get a 24" or 30"...So rectangular. That would allow me to wash my cast iron cookware right there at the stove, and leave the cleanup area for dishes and other things that go in the dishwashers. Size is more important than shape. Consider all you want to do with/in it. Make sure there's room for the veggies (or whatever) and your arms/hands to work comfortably. Make sure there's room for your biggest colander for draining noodles, etc. If you want to be able to wash or rinse certain things, make sure you have the size for it. Then make sure you have plenty of room left to the side in front of the stove for a good, wide-as-you-ll-need prep space.

I have a similar layout, and I chose this sink: The Franke GNX11016 I, too, put mine on the corner of the island to access from both sides, with a corner placement of the faucet. I really wanted it symmetrical. I love this sink! The sink is symmetrical, with a corner drain placement, nice and deep, big enough for my largest stock pots and colanders, but not so large as to hog tons of counter or cabinet space. (Note, put tip out on the false drawer front for a handy place to hide a sponge, drain stopper, etc. This is really handy on the island where you don't want to put a bowl/holder with that stuff on the "back" of the sink . . . which works nicely on a perimeter sink.) I bought mine on Amazon (or somewhere like that) for about $350, but here is a link at AJ Madison since they have great spec details. (But terrible customer service. I know you, like I do, will be washing sizable amounts of produce, and filling and draining large pots with the size of family you have. I prefer rectangular or square for the most interior size in the space...If it's round or D-shaped, you're just losing part of the area within the same-sized cabinet available for sink. Ours has interior measurements of 14 x 15 1/2" (I think it's 'official' size is 17 x 18 1/2). It works great for most things, and I wouldn't want smaller. In my 'dream (fantasy/perfect) kitchen' I'd have a 24-30". If you're going to want to rinse or wash pots and pans in it, as some like to since prep sinks are close to the cooking area, I would go as large as you can get.

I also think depth is very important, especially if it is located in an island or place where splashing water could be an issue. Mine is 8" deep and as an undermount, it's a bit over 9" below the countertop. That depth seems to keep most of the water in the sink. And I agree that 12 x 12 would be the minimum, but I'd get the biggest sink I could fit in the cab without sacrificing too much counterspace in the area. I have the D-shaped sink but only because it matches the D shaped main sink in the kitchen.
