countertops- marble vs. solid surface?
Comments (9)Agree with the other posters. Not a fan of Corian. A former neighbor had it in her kitchens and baths and I was underwhelmed by its performance. We're in the process of starting to consider our options for kitchen and bath renos. I've had granite in my kitchen in previous homes prior to being married and loved it. But my wonderful DH isn't good at wiping up messes he leaves on the counter and this isn't going to change, so I'm strongly leaning towards engineered stone at this point....See Moretrying to figure out vinyl vs wood laminate Help !
Comments (11)Don't get me wrong, a solid argument can be made for any of these. But what I like about glue down vinyl plank is its wear-ability and repair-ability. Lets say you replace an appliance like a dishwasher and when it gets dragged out a sharp edge of the appliance gouges into the flooring right in the middle of the room. With sheet vinyl your faced with a tedious repair that will most likely be noticeable from that point on. (Live with it or replace it). With the laminate you can replace the affected piece, but it s in the middle of room. So to get to that piece you have to take half the room apart (and probably have to remove some quarter round from the base board) and it never seems to go back together quite like it was. (takes half a day if your lucky and hopefully looks and feels right after its put back together) With vinyl plank you can heat up the affected plank with a heat gun or hair dryer, peel up the bad plank, apply a little glue and lay down the replacement piece and your done. (10-15 minute job and you never know anything happened.) Vinyl plank is superior to sheet vinyl in repair-ability. Vinyl plank is superior to laminate in repair-ability and wet area performance. Again this is just my opinion....See MoreVinyl Plank vs Tile Plank vs Vinyl Tile Plank vs Laminate
Comments (12)We did our whole basement a few months back in luxury vinyl tile (that's the lvt above :) ) and just love it. I think it's a no-brainer if you have dogs that will scratch up hardwood or need waterproofing (we put it through our laundry area and mudroom). On a main floor, I'd still do hardwood, because all of the other options feel fake underfoot (barefoot). But if that's not an option, the lvt is warm, soft, and has some awesome looks these days. I really think it's going to completely replace laminate pretty quickly....See MoreFlooring Help SPC vs Laminate Vs Engineered
Comments (11)SPC is not LVP. LVP can be brittle, especially the thinner click locking mechanisms. SPC is a solid vinyl product that should perform well and having sold it for roughly 2-3 years, am unaware of any consistent problems with them. As far as finish wear on vinyl, again some of the more cost effective products are likely only finished out with a few coats of polyurethane but many of the better quality materials are finished out with polyurethane PLUS either a ceramic-bead or aluminum oxide finish which make the finish more resistant to scratches. Newer vinyl products are being referred to as "RVP" which stands for Rigid Vinyl Plank and are also well-performing products. I do not think you'll have issues with furniture denting SPC or RVP-core products - LVP, yes if it's heavy enough. Laminates are also solid materials. They are similar to vinyl in that they are not real wood (rather they are digital prints - pictures of wood) but quality products will hold up to wear-and-tear nicely. They can scratch but not easily but most laminate products do not perform as well with respect to moisture. The core underneath a laminate is fiberboard which is essentially sawdust (wood) and a few other things - wood swells with moisture and most laminates will do the same. The newer water-resistant categories will perform better with respect to moisture however they are not waterproof so if they are exposed to moisture for a prolonged period of time some swelling will occur (though most say it is marginal). Engineered is "real" wood - it is not a digital print. Big win is you get more return on your investment come resell time as you can advertise real wood when you sell the home but they will likely scratch easier and wood does not hold up to moisture quiet as nicely. Let me know if I can help in any other way....See Moresquigs
