how to get rid of cat odor?

My sister just purchased a house, previous owner have 3 cats, the cats hang around the house but the cats live in the basement (concrete floor), the basement stinks, and the house itself have some cat odor (not too much), is there a recommended product or home remedy to get rid of this?? i would greatly appreciate all feedbacks!!! :)

What kind of odor? Are you talking urine? Cats in general do not smell and are extremely good "self-cleaners" so you need to sure of what it is your are smelling before treating it.

If the basement has a cement floor, tell the home owner to go to the nearest home supply store go get a nice bristle brush, a giant bottle of bleach and some dish soap. Put a bit of soap in a bucket with warm/hot water and get some good puddles going on the floor, use the broom/brush to scrub the floor...add a bit of bleach to another bucket and follow the soapy treatment with the light bleach treatment, scrub with the brush and rinse well. Make sure there is good ventilation. Good luck

Although, I do feel for you, I must agree as a life-long cat owner that they are not vindictive and in this situation it usually is because there is something wrong with them. Outdoor Cats usually poop in dirt and cover it up. If they are marking territory they usually spray, not poop. It is possible that may be what he is doing, but unlikely. The benefit of telling the owner is that if he sick (nothing that you should fear, he isn't contagious to humans)they can take him to the vet to get him checked out, since he may not have a litter box at home for them to notice it. Be clear with them that you are telling them out of concern for the animal, not because you are looking to punish him. As for your part of the problem, I too suggest getting a PHEROMONE spray or liquid (available at any pet store) and spraying on the area he poops after cleaning it with a bleach substance to kill the smell and bacteria. They will keep going there if they can smell it and bleach or other cleaners do not get rid of the scent (they can smell it) and making it more uncomfortable. You could put a litter box near by, which could solve the problem, too. But please do tell the owner that their cat may be sick and save both of you from further misery if that is indeed the cause of it.

I have an allergy to cats. What you are allergic to is cat dander--dandruff. My cousin is severely allergic to cats and she can tell if a person has been handling cats even though there is no hair on their clothes. There may be no hair but there is dander. A good cleaning and vacuuming of the house should be all that's needed, especially now that the carpets have been removed. Don't forget to get rid of the vacuum bag after you clean, if you don't that will be a storehouse for fur and dander.

The shavings may absorb some of the moisture in the droppings, but the odor will remain, as you have experienced. I've used one litter made from ground corncobs and another made from recycled newspaper. Both were safe, but were only slightly better than pine shavings for the odor. In my opinion, the best and safest cleanup/deodorizer for excrement is Pooh-Radicator (P-4 that effectively dissolves the ___ with no toxicity at all). I'll put a link below. I would clean the cage bottom with that, then cover it with paper that I changed daily. Alternatively, I think a little Simple Green mixed with water for cage cleaning and rinsed well afterward would be effective, but it does have its own scent. I don't know if it's still available, but I've seen Kilz paint. It has the sealer and the paint mixed together. If you want to try cleaning before painting, try TSP. It's far more effective than the combination of things you mentioned. BTW-I don't think an unremovable, hard-wired smoke detector exists. Even hard wired detectors require batteries in case of an electrical outage. The detector must be removed for battery replacement. I live in an area with a large population of young renters. My city just adopted an ordinance requiring hard wired detectors in all rentals. It was quite controversial, and I learned a lot about smoke detectors in the local reports about the ordinance. People will find a way to remove them. Sounds stupid, but it happens.

Bleach may not do it, it will just cover the smell up for a while. To get rid of the odor you need an enzyme cleaning spray to break down the chemicals in the odor. Look online, there are many products, or call a local vet or pet shop to ask what the best product is.

Even if you pull up carpet that is stained, the subfloor will be damaged as well, you need to treat it before you recarpet or put down wood or the smell will just permeate the new flooring.

thanks everyone, i found out from a friend that no matter what you do, the cat urine is the toughest stain/odor to get out..
i searched and searched and final found something that is what i am looking for. there's tons of review on this product.

Petsmart and most if not all pet stores sell a few different brand names of pet odor removers made with enzymes. Some of the names are Natures Miracle and Simple Solutions. Shop by price because they're all pretty much the same thing...gallon jugs or larger are the cheapest way to buy it and you'll need that much at least because you have to apply it full strength and let it sit. Another brand is PetZyme and is less expensive than the aforementioned two and works just as well.

After cleaning with the enzyme product, she could try painting the floors with BIN or KILZ primer/sealer. They are supposed to seal or provide a barrier for stains and odors.

I too, moved into a house where there were cats that had sprayed. I didn't notice it when I looked at the house. I tried all sorts of odor/enzyme removers/Kilz paint which only helped for a short time. I had to cut out the wood base flooring, cut out the drywall and 2x4 studs and replace it. Sometimes if the humid/wind is just right I will still get a faint odor. Just my own opinion- NEVER buy a house with a cat odor if you are aware of it. Hope you do better than I did- it was alot of work...
