How do you get rid of pet (parrot) Odor?

I have a Blue & Gold Macaw that stays outside when its warm enough, but now that its winter she has to come in when its cold. My house is starting to stink! I just bought some pine shavings for the bottom of her cage and I think it has made it worse. I can't stand the smell. Any ideas or know of something to spray that really works? Her body doesn't smell just the room air. Thanks

If memory serves me, because of their food, macaw feathers smell wonderful. What are you feeding him? How big is the cage? I have never heard of putting shavings in a bird cage, and I worry a parrot might eat them. How often, and how do you clean the cage?

There's a whole lotta poop building up if it is smelly in the house! You *MUST* be very cautious of spray to mask odors because many can be toxic and fatal for birdies!

Best to change the bedding DAILY to eliminate fecal build-up. We use shredded corn cob bedding for all our birds. Sometimes we use alfalfa pellets too. Both absorb odors and can be scooped like kitty litter daily to eliminate organic matter build-up and odors.

A thorough cage cleaning is a must as well.

Treating pet odors is what I do for a living and I see situations like this on a daily basis. I am going to asume your basement subflooring is concrete which is porous and will absorb urine and its odors. Bleach is the strongest household disinfectant you can use to kill germs and odors and it will do good as a initial clean-up on the surface which is the key word. After the bleach has dried the concrete still has wet urine and odor below the surface that is still off-gassing. The next step is get the concrete as dry as possible by using air movers and dehumidifiers together this equipment will also dry the walls if the cats have been spraying on them. Finally we use a industrial sealer that has a moisture barrier and a odor barrier once applied we guarantee you will never smell any pet urine odor from any area we treat. Kills is designed for smoke odors, as cat and dog urine acids will eventually weaken the product and the urine odor will be back. Enzymes are temporary fixes or are for minor problems per the manufacturers instruction the area has to stay wet for up to 3 weeks for best results and @$20-40 gal do the math bleach is better and stronger. Besides you have already cleaned the area now you have to get it sealed. Oh! and toss the carpet It would cost you more for a pet odor treatment then replacement. I'm sorry, I have not had a chance to get any charcoal. The smell is still there. Not as strong as it was a few weeks ago and after a month it is tolerable, but everyone who comes into my new room asks "what is that smell?" This is INSANE how much worse the smell is after this supposed VOC compliant crap. There is no way in hell this is better for you. for the first 3 weeks I could not even stand being in the room as I would get a headache after breathing this in for 20 minutes. I loved the old smell of the old stuff and it would be gone within a week. This smell is going on over a month and It is still lingering. I think we need to find another brand or get everyone to complain to these varnish companies to bring back the old formulas. Why did they even change it? How in the heck did they ever test this and Say "Yeah this is better!! You would have to have absolutely no sense of smell to think this stuff is good for anyone to breath or use. Do they really think by changing the smell or recipe of varnish we are saving the planet? It is ridiculous!! I'm so sorry I wish I had the answer for you. I just left my windows open a crack for days until it was tolerable. Also you could use a damp rid bag and hope that will absorb some of the smell. It is strong at first but I know at least these hanging bags smell better than the varnish!! You can get these at Lowes or HomeDepot in the cleaning isle.

Maybe in 6 months things will be better. @peabody1 - as I said above, it will take about 2 weeks. At 2 weeks it was plenty long enough, but Idk where you are getting 6 months. I was advised to try Affresh, which is a dishwasher cleaner that has a lemony smell. I cannot fathom why you would want to use another dishwasher cleaner on top of the one you have just used to add another smell to what you are suffering with now. Who "advised" you to do this? And, if you are taking advice from someone or somewhere else, why did you post here. This is ridiculous. Jeez, just wash the dishes. @wdccruise - it does not sound like you have used dishwasher cleaner like Cascade or Finish (not dishwasher detergent, a dishwasher cleaner). Please use one of those, and come back here and tell us how you got rid of the smell from the cleaner by just washing the dishes. I swear to you, it is not going to work.

The shavings may absorb some of the moisture in the droppings, but the odor will remain, as you have experienced. I've used one litter made from ground corncobs and another made from recycled newspaper. Both were safe, but were only slightly better than pine shavings for the odor.

In my opinion, the best and safest cleanup/deodorizer for excrement is Pooh-Radicator (P-4 that effectively dissolves the ___ with no toxicity at all). I'll put a link below. I would clean the cage bottom with that, then cover it with paper that I changed daily.

Alternatively, I think a little Simple Green mixed with water for cage cleaning and rinsed well afterward would be effective, but it does have its own scent.

I'm sure you know that you must be extremely careful with the products you use around birds because of their delicate lungs.

I have 4 MaCaws that live inside year round. 3/4 of the year our house is closed up tight as we are in northern NY. We only use newspapers. We changed daily ( we are well supplied by our local paper of all we want of "last weeks") I very rarely notice any smell...and when I do it is usually an orange or some other food that has fallen under furniture. Your bird may have some type of infection going on and should be Vet checked.
The only thing we use on your cages is water and viniger.

I line my Amazon's cage with newspaper and just remove the top layer each day and throw it in the outside garbage. Then once a week I clean the whole cage with hot water and stack another set of papers in the bottom. Pine shavings and other aromatic shavings (cedar, etc.) are very bad for birds' respiratory system.
