If the thought is that the caffeine in the coffee might kill them, you could try it. You would want to make sure that you don't get too much in the soil (try to keep it just on the leaves) as brewed coffee is relatively acidic and you don't want to unecessarily affect the pH of your soil.

Hippis really want to live! No matter the abuse, they can amaze you! Hope you found the "suggestions" helpful. I was out on the side yard, in the rain, picking off snails! UGH! Some of the bulbs have leaves that would nearly come up to my shoulders. Yes...they are in 1-gallon pots, but that's still a good 4.5'+ for length. It's good to see that they are soooo happy. This can be a very stressful time of year. Temps of 100 and dry. I think I finally have the watering and shade down. Someone was discarding HUGE framed window screens (6' x 3') and so I attached them to the frame around the pots and leaned them on one side to protect from hot southern sun. Bulbs are very happy!! Hope this means lots of blooms in March-June 2014! Even my Komoriya bulbs have already put out 6+ leaves so, although those leaves were cut for shipment, I think it looks like we'll get blooms again in the spring. My own crosses from 2-3 years ago are thriving...so I am really looking forward to LOTS of blooms!! K

Hey haven't seen you around in awhile 3orangeboys! Good to have you back! As for the larspur I was really disappointed. I planted two different kinds of them and in one bed a few really small straglers that may or may not bloom. The second bed I have 3 blooming now and a few others that are about to bloom but no where near what I was hoping for. I really think both the weather and the heavy rains right after I sowed them had a lot to do with it. I'm going to sow some next spring as well and hope I get a better show. Here are a few purples that are blooming but their are some others that haven't bloomed yet. Meghan

We have a huge grasshopper problem here in Northern Nebraska. Every year when the winter wheat gets cut in early summer, they invade and eat anything that is available to them. Namely my garden. They defoliate most of my garden plants every year. I do not use insecticides though because I don't want to kill beneficial bugs too. It just goes with country living I suppose. I stopped mowing the outlaying areas of the ranch a few years ago to give them more foliage to chew on than just my garden. It remains to be seen how bad they are here in town this summer. MeMo
