Attention: Grandmas. Need ideas for little ones

So many Grandmas here, I thought we might share ideas for playing with the kids. Here's my contribution. By the way, mine are 2 and 3.

They love the salad spinner. Put small toys in and make them go around and around.

On youtube, Super Simple Songs are so charming and sweet I like listening to them myself. Hickory Dickery Dock is funny, Row Row Row Your Boat is so gentle, good for a last listen before a nap.

We had a "Toy Wash" on the patio. Put 3 riding toys out (Cozy Coupe, etc.) with a small pan of water and some paint brushes and rags. I didn't get the hose because I didn't want them getting soaked. They washed the toys and dried them with rags. They also like to write on the patio with chalk. I make them lay down flat and trace around them, then draw in the clothing, hair.

Oh, by the way, when there are squabbles over toys, I get out the timer and set it, when the timer rings, it's the other one's turn. That way it's the timer in charge, not me.

Any other ideas?

If it's nice and warm outside get them a bucket of water and an old paint brush and let them paint the heck out of the drive way, sidewalk etc... They really do love it.

Take a empty water bottle, probably 16oz or smaller would work. Cut the bottom out of the bottle and duct tape an old sock over the cut end of the bottle, leaving and inch or two of the sock hanging off . Take a bucket and make a mixture of water and dishwashing liquid. They dip the sock in the water and blow thru the top of the bottle, it makes hundreds of bubbles. This will keep them busy for a long time it's so much fun.

I've thought about this same thing, imagining that some day I'll get to build a house on a nice piece of land. I think it's definitely worth a try. Here's what I'd do: Pick the spots where the trees will be planted, and this spring build small raised beds, maybe 4 feet square, (one for each tree) out of 2X6 boards. Dig in some compost and fill the beds with compost or some other organic matter. By the fall, the soil will be really nice for several inches deep....rich in organic matter which will help with water retention as well as drainage, and loose and crumbly...ideal for root growth. Of course, if the soil there is already ideal, this isn't really necessary :) Order bare root trees for delivery this spring and pot them up in the biggest pots you can handle and transport. Maybe use rootmakers or smartpots to maximize root branching. In the late summer, plant the trees in the previously prepared beds. This way you will be transplanting essentially container grown plants, (which should minimize transplant shock) into loose soil that has good water storage capacity. Give them a good layer of mulch, like straw or wood chips. The trees will have the fall, winter, and spring to grow their roots before they have to face the rigors of a hot summer. With a good root system well on its way to establishment in good soil, they should be able to survive quite a bit of neglect. Good luck! Alex

I have a recipe for a tagine of mini aubergines with mint and coriander. 1 to 2 soup spoons olive oil a knob of butter 1 to 2 chopped red onions 4 crushed garlic cloves 1 or 2 chillis to taste or 2 to 3 dried 1 to 2 t spoons coriander seeds toasted and crushed, same for cumin seeds 2 t spoons sugar 16 mini aubergineswith their stalks 800g tinned tomatoes small bouquet of mint chopped bouquet of coriander, chopped s&p heat the oil and butter and cook the onions and garlic. Add the peppers, coriander grains, cumin and sugar. Once it all smells nice and fragrant, add the aubergines and tomatoes and cook gently for 40 minutes or until the aubergines are nice and tender. Season and add the herbs.

Well some meaningful gifts we have given the kids and they loved are: I have made photo albums for each of them of their favorite pictures, they keep them on their bookshelves in their rooms I took my sd's to the fabric store and had them pick out fabrics they liked and we worked together making curtains, pillows, and comforters for their bedroom that matched and looked really nice. Since they went with all purple and pink we also took some of the old picture frames we had around the house that were not being used and painted them with purple and pink paints. Then we went through all our pictures and they picked their favorites to blow up and put into the frames. One of my sd's is really into High School Musical, so as one of her Christmas presents just me and her went to see High School Musical on Ice and she got a souvenier and I took some great pictures and made her an album with them And on each kids birthday they always get a choice of whatever they want for us to make for dinner that night. Also, we have wrapped up a homemade giftcard for a certain amount and told them they can pick what we do for a day and that is how much money they have to spend (not a shopping spree---but a trip to the movies, bowling, lunch, or whatever they choose for us to all do together) They can pick if they just want a daddy and me, mommy and me, or a family day with that gift card. Sad little pond, fantastic yard-- need ideas for hardscape/landscape

What a beautiful property and so much potential! I'm the last person to give landscaping advice (you'd agree if you saw my yard lol, but it's mostly for lack of funds, not necessarily lack of ideas). That being said, as far as the pond, I personally could take it or leave it. However, if I were to keep it, I would like to put a gorgeous stone patio (rounded, curves, not a square or rectangle) in that area from the house to the pond, encompassing the pond to make it part of the patio. Possibly a low wall around the patio, with pots of annuals trailing down, or gardens around the wall or patio. I envision a seating area next to the pond enjoying the water (maybe putting a little water fall or water feature in it) and a water garden. I'd also put a small tree somewhere near the patio to shade it, but then I love the shade and think a sunny patio is nothing but a seat in hell, lol. I know you have that patio on the other side, but to me that looks more like a place to have morning coffee, not entertain or sit in the evening. Not everyone can have two patios, lol, but if you have the space and the funds, it might be nice. And this is where you could put your pergola (instead of or in addition to a small tree) and lights, and sit in the evening next to the pond. As far as the rest, you have so many choices and I think you need to think about what you want out of the yard. A vegetable garden can be created to be visually lovely but honestly it often ends up looking more utilitarian, so perhaps put that farther from the house and focus on perennial beds closer. On the other hand, having your vegetable garden close to the house is very convenient (says the person who has to walk across half an acre to snip some beans for dinner lol) Do you like formal plantings or more cottagey gardens? Do you want to have some kind of historically accurate garden to go with the house? I would incorporate shrubs and evergreens and berried plants for year-round interest (although of course check for toxicity for your dog - sorry, I don't have a dog so I don't know what is dangerous to them). Natives are, IMO, a bit less work. I would prefer some privacy so I might put some shrubs on the fence line, at least near the house, but be careful about light - you don't want to plant anything that will be too tall and might end up blocking the sun unless you are planning a shade garden. Think about watering too. Again, if you have the funds, now is the time to run piping for extra spigots around the yard, or an irrigation system, etc. I also love the idea of a secret little grotto in that back area with the old dairy walls. Something shady and restful and cool, with a place to sit and relax... nice! One thing of course to keep in mind is your view from the bedroom, if that is important to you. You may want to orient that entire side of the yard to look good from there as well as from the ground. If you put a pergola or small tree in the back there it might block some of the view, or it may add to it. Good luck, and please keep us posted as you go along! Thanks, firewife.

Love that sock/water bottle idea. Does it need to be a thinner sock, like nylon? I'm thinking a cotton sock would be too heavy.Will definitely try that. Sounds foolproof compared to the wands. DH bought a battery run bubble machine, but it clogs too much.

Actually I started them "painting the patio" and it morphed into Toy Wash.

get a stool, about 3 inches of sudsy water in the sink, and plastic dishes. Let them "wash" dishes.

we made a book one day...taught 2 of my 9, to maje English muffin pizza, and took pictures as we progressed...printed them off on the computer and they took the "book" home...their nana went one better and made on studier paper for an activity she shared with the girls...

oh funny story...the one dgd is now in 5th grade..she and her gf ran in to say hi when they picked up dh...she says gma do you still have a certain book? I did..she took it home! her mom says oh we cab give it to your youngest cousin...told her mom no! it's mine!..lol...

Make Flubber and give them cookie cutters and rolling pins. Flubber is Elmer glue, borax and water. The recipe is on this site somewhere.

I have cheated a few times and will buy a couple of Pillsbury cookie dough tubes, when I don't have any homemade stuff in in the freezer. Their attention span I find does not last the length of time it takes to make the actual cookie dough, not to mention the mess and the step stools in the way and if there is more than one child the bickering of who's turn it is to do what. Sit them at the table and let them make their cookies. A long time ago I purchased a toaster oven at a yard sale, almost brand new, which we have used for all the kids as their own "easy bake oven" beats the heat from the regular stove and while they are playing with the dough at the table the oven doesn't have to be on waiting for them. The kids each have their own basket in the cabinet with their names on them, in addition to the ones that have craft stuffs, and one for the bath, rubber duckies and funnels, plastic squirt bottles etc. The kitchen one has their aprons, cookie cutters, kid size rolling pins, and the last one for lost n found items, that I usually find after they go home. They sort through it when they come back and make claim to what is theirs.

Socks... it doesn't have to be a thin or nylon socks. I just used a regular ole cotton crew sock...

OK, great everyone. Thank you so much. Yesterday we made a fort with blankets, and it was so much fun.

Eileen I'm on Pinterest but have never used it much and not always sure how it works. I did find your site and the Grandma ideas and selected to follow. Not sure what this means! Anyway, thanks for the ideas.

You mentioned a fort with the blankets, we did/do the "boat" thing sometimes for a nap but most of the time for bedtime. The kids all love it and even my kids still talk about the adventures we used to go on. It was our time to wind down and we did it most weekends, especially in nasty weather. The boat got supplied with books, snacks, flashlights, favorite toy and blankies, and a plastic placemat map that I had found. They would close their eyes and pick a place. Off we went We take a portable radio, to check the time and weather, They used their imaginations and could make up the best stories. I used blankets, quilts, sleeping bags and pillows, whatever they wanted to gather and the living room floor was ours. They also knew there was no tv and what was dragged out had to be put back or there would be no more adventures. There was never a problem with cleanup time. One benefit is you get to lie there and grab a some rest with your eyes closed and listen as they talk on.....one regret I didn't tape some of the conversations for them. My daughter got through a couple of long hydro outages using this same activity, said the kids were very content and she said it was fun.
