Gil, this is my grape scented iris. When it rains, the petals sort of melt together making the flower look like mush. But the stems are tall enough that you can easily bend over and bury your nose in its luscious fragrance: The Calgary Hort. Society published some books (The Calgary Gardener Vol. 1 and 2) a while back; this is the information they give about bearded irises in our climate: "Developed and selected for flower size and colour rather than winter hardiness, they require ideal conditions to survive our winters." I have a feeling that the TBs I've lost were either planted too late in the season to develop good roots, or they were not growing in ideal conditions. I've also lost a few because of deer. They don't eat them...they just stomp all over them in winter in order to get to the cedars. I'm determined to keep trying because many of them are so beautiful. Please keep us updated re: all your new TBs, Gillian. I hope they all grow well and bloom for you this spring!

Well I for one can't wait to see it 20 years down the road. I wish I was able to space mine farther apart... I have 3 acres, but an acre of that is my house, septic, plus a heavy wooded section. Then the wife said I need to leave some room for our kids... what's that all about lol. So I have about 2 acres to work with. I'm 28, I have everything spaced so they have enough room for at least 30 years. So when I'm in my mid 50's I'll probably have to go through and thin stuff out then replant a few. I'm going to hate when that day comes, I just don't have enough land to plant everything so they have enough space for 60+ years.

I received a surprise today from Chris (grolikecrazy)! Thank you. :) The plain letter envelope had holes in it- looks like it was damaged in transit. There was no bubble wrap or other padding inside of it to cushion the seeds. Seeds sent to me with no bubbles almost always do get destroyed like this, because the PO runs mail through some hard metal rollers unless it's in a bubble mailer marked FRAGILE in big red letters. :( The Dianthus barbatus seeds were about 75% destroyed and the Red Noodle Yard Long Bean seeds were completely dust. Thank you grolikecrazy, for kindly sending to me. I can still sow the few Dianthus seeds that made it, and hopefully get some plants! Excited about that. :) I'm sorry this happened, Chris. You were so kind to send seeds to me. I'm very glad you were thinking of me, and some of the Dianthus seeds do appear to be usable. It made my day to receive this, even if it is just a few seeds. : ) Thanks, Grovespirit Wondering why the surprises I mailed out haven't shown up here yet. I do hope they didn't get lost in the mail.
