Looking for layout ideas for my dream kitchen.

My husband and I worked out a house design that we think will work for our family of 4. The only area I'm still unsure of is the kitchen design.

The kitchen is huge (15.5ft wide x 22ft length to the pantry wall or 29ft in length to dining room entrance)and is partially open to the main living room. Also the ceiling height will be 9'.

Cabinet style will most likely be shaker, white or cherry. Haven't decide yet.

I really want my sink facing the back of the house with the windows, so I can watch the kids playing out back.

Also the island will have a bar height counter top along with the regular height counter top and a prep sink.

I also want a double wall oven but don't know where to place it.

The breakfast table I want to be a banquet built in seating.

Anyone want to critique it for me or give me ideas? I want to have everything ready for the house designer when we have the blue prints drawn up.

There's a whole lot to like about your future home, and the kitchen looks really luxurious. I think I might pull the fridge in toward the stove a bit, maybe shorten the island, in the interests of keeping the busy work area itself nice and efficient.

If it were mine, though, the one big problem for me would be the position of the pantry. The route from the master to the children's side, and vice versa, is really...byzantine and not one I'd care to make over and over in the middle of the night. While my children were small and needy, I'd move food storage somewhere else and create a straight shot from one side of the house to the other.

Now, on the other hand, I FULLY understand needing to get as far from teenagers, and hard to find as possible (I have traumatic flashbacks to this day), and you might want to keep the option open for installation of a blockading pantry in another decade or so.

BTW, are you planning to have a door from your master wing out to the back porch? It's a lovely feature for a master to have, and in your case it would prevent quite a hike when you specifically needed to get out there quick.

Thank you for your kind words Rosie! We've designed this floor plan for our children. They are dd 11 and ds 8. My husband also works rotating shifts and he needs to have our bedroom away from all the noise. We're using the hall way as a buffer. Also he wanted direct access from the garage to the master bedroom.

Looking at the kitchen area does seem large and that is probably because my kitchen now is tiny! I was looking at the stove placement and I think I want to center the stove with the opening to the living room.

Do you or anyone on here know of a free online program that I can input the size of my kitchen and do a 3d version to really get a feel of the kitchen. My program is very lacking in the kitchen program.

Houseful-thanks for all the detailed pictures! So cool how you have transformed that space! This house is in Arcadia, we are currently in the East Valley. So...one thing we are playing with is the idea of keeping the original flooring. That requires moving as few walls as possible to keep repairs/replacements to a minimum. So that is informing the following ideas: I am currently toying with the idea of having a doorway from the library to the kitchen that lines up with the doorway to the dining room. With both the kitchen/library and kitchen/dining walls being half walls opened up above the lower cabs, if that makes sense. So I could see out the dining room windows at a sink and the library window at a cooktop possibly. Lining up the doorways would direct traffic through the kitchen but maybe that would be okay since my work area would be all on one side of the doorways? If we did this you would be able to see the backyard from the library and view out the front from the dining room... Rosie-the garden room was not built according to the plans and is just a room with a huge skylight...I was thinking of keeping it, but with half walls so when you enter the house you can see through it to the back windows...I was thinking of making it a small play room with a couch under the skylight. (Skylight is quite long and narrow along the wall opposite the door). A friend of mine has a reading couch under a skylight and it is magical to stretch out and read there during rainstorms... I like the idea of the kitchen in the middle, I think...Now, it is desirable to do less for the flooring reason, but I want to think big and I would love ideas that grab space from anywhere, really. We are mere days into months of planning so my initial thoughts may change dramatically. I would love to tear out as little as possible but I am open to considering it nonetheless!

No, the deleted thread was just under 2/3s full, but perhaps the mod felt the concern raised about spamming justified pulling it. Of course, since the bickering got out of line, that may also have factored into its deletion, but I've seen other disputes that were allowed to stay active and let the community make its own assessment. If you check the reg dates of several of the outraged posters there seems to be more than mere coincidence at work. One of the same posters asked a supposedly innocent kitchen question on another thread and forgot which name they had used to originally post. They later replied under another name, again one used by the accused spammer, and made it quite obvious to those familiar with both threads that the accusation on the deleted one was on target. I don't know if I was the last to post on the deleted thread, but I suggested that in the future once a spamming accusation is deemed warranted, we simply cease to respond as a few good GWers well versed and knowledgeable in the operations of internet marketing pointed out that one way the spammers can benefit is by the number of posts generated to a thread that calls attention to the spam product, not just by the number of hits they may drive from the curious who look at the blog or internet vendor. Besides I really dislike the utterly stupid change in tone that the accusers interjected in to the GW community. While we may have some with a strong sarcastic flair that might make the more sensitive types cringe a bit, their pointed wit is often well placed. I have a lower threshold for the type of silliness we were subjected to by the spammers. Nonetheless (N-o-n-etheless) earlier on that thread I noted that the antonym to "all" had disappeared from someone's post as the same word had disappeared from my posts in a different forum. I read another thread this morning and saw the same word was missing in yet another poster's response from 8/16/11 so this was not a new problem just occurring yesterday. Anyone have any ideas whether this is just a GW gnome issue confined to the GW site or whether it could affect posters?

Hi everyone. I've been trying to get paying work done (I freelance), but I've had more ideas bouncing around my head. I'm liking what we all came up with for the island/table configuration. But, I really want to move the wall. I think it just opens up many options for the kitchen. I talked to the engineer today and am setting up an appt for him to evaluate next week. I also talked to a framer that a full-service firm who didn't want my small job referred me to. He does nothing but framing for builders and remodelers. He told me "realistically anywhere from $1500 to $3k" and he knows about pouring new footers if needed and building temp support walls on all 3 floors while the new support is being built. IF it is under $5k altogether to move the walls, then I'll do it. Our cabinets will come in at under $5k, so I figure for the $10k lots of folks in our neighborhood spend on cabinets at Home Depot, I'm getting the layout I really want. So here is my latest plan (number 472 I think ;-) Janet--I got you some landing space for the ovens! Which is now also a beverage center outside the main work space, so I think that is good placement for kids to grab something and for adults at parties. All my wine glasses can go in the cab above. The micro is there as well. The micro might be better inside my L space, but this way, it's pretty convenient to getting heated stuff to the table. And we use it mostly for steaming veggies or heating up leftovers, so things usually go from micro to table. Plus there is more storage space with that unit. I appreciate the feedback on the corner, but I like this cabinet versus the 36" lazy Susan (which I think should be renamed the "go-getter Susan" ;-). I don't like the piano hinge door on the Susan cab--I can see my kids banging it around and scratching up the cabinets around it will get banged up too. That IKEA corner unit has a door and it is just two half moon shelves that swing out. It may not hold as much, but I found it pretty handy to use. Plus, it gives me a drawer right there by the cooktop which the Susan doesn't have. Another thing I realized is that the DR door shouldn't be centered on the wall--it needs to stay near where it is now. Even though I think it looks more aesthetically pleasing to be centered, that door is a direct pathway into the kitchen and we don't need to be maneuvering around the dining room table. LavenderLass--you may have missed this in my earlier verbose posts, but I already have most of the appliances in the basement. They were a great deal from a fancy appliance store that went out of business. So, it's putting the cart before the horse, but I'm trying to work it all in. Thank you for helping me out on the window--I'm definitely going to find out the costs on that one. It would look much more upscale. I'll check in after I've met with the engineer and get more precise bids on the wall. Keep your fingers crossed. Thanks to everyone for your encouragement and suggestions so far. I want to be logical, and not try to design my whole house around a dream kitchen, but alas, I am after all, TKO. Talk me down? I am flailing here, as you will see. I feel your pain because I'm in nearly the same position as you except it's my roof lines that are driving me batty. I've gone through countless iterations of what I want on my first floor and because I have fewer room needs than your plans shows, meaning fewer combinations, I've tried my hand at playing with orientations in order to achieve my multiple goals. What I'm finding is that no matter what I do, when I pull on the string in one place the rest of the tapestry is affected, so design, as I see it (I'm no professional) has to flow organically, one feature flowing naturally into the next. I'm sensing that you're hitting that same wall - the combination of shapes/orientations isn't working throughout the whole house. I wouldn't hesitate for even a moment in scraping a plan that you don't feel completely comfortable with and I wouldn't for a moment think that you're illogical for building a whole plan around your kitchen. I'm pretty much doing that right now. What I found was that the kitchen was the room that was/is driving me the battiest, so if I start with a blank slate (still mindful of my conditions, which in your case would be the underground garage plus other points) and then play around with the kitchen shape + workflow + adjoining rooms & features and get those issues mostly settled in the kitchen then the rest of the house can flow outwards from there. I noticed that your architects original plan had an angled section and that he put secondary rooms in there, leaving the primary rooms in the traditional square/block pattern. The square rooms are definitely easier to work with. Your attempt at a compromise put a functional room into the angled wing and this created an awkward junction between the family room and the kitchen right at the kitchen. Why not continue the angle with the kitchen included and then try to use the space where the two wings of the house meet in a way that serves a purpose. So my words of advice to you are to break the problems down into individual problems and then try to solve one at a time before proceeding to the next. Count on a 3 steps forward, 2 steps back type of process as you'll find yourself going back to what you think you had solved which now presents as a problem due to something you've just done, and then begin the process again, one step at a time. I don't know what you want to accomplish with the kitchen design, but one thing I would try is to orient the kitchen with the family room. In your crooked picture, find the point where the DR meets the kitchen and draw your 45 wall starting there. Then draw another 45 line right at your door, losing the little window wall to the left of the entry. Now the awkward angled space is right where your pantry and closets are located and it is here that you can hide the awkward space into secondary rooms. You have a lot of room to work with in your kitchen space, so mix it up, try things that you normally wouldn't, and may well reject, but try these new ideas in order to see how they play out and how they affect other aspects of your plan. Try bumpouts, try peninsulas, try a banquette, try a bay window, try an irregular shaped room (beyond just a room at a 45 angle to the adjacent room.) Most importantly though is to spell out what you want in your kitchen and which of the designs that you posted most speaks to you.

A centered stove/"hearth" would be very attractive, and of course you can massage the doorway to make it work.

So your kids are already halfway to their teens. Makes more sense now. I've heard Rome had crooked streets around the Coliseum specifically to keep riots from gathering speed and mass. :)

The Ikea kitchen planner is a very quick study and easy to master.

It would also help if you could do a closeup shot of just the kitchen and adjacent relevant areas. Do you have a scanner?

I hope this helps. I've enlarged the picture 160%. Thanks for the ikea idea! I'm going to go and look at it now. I'll post what I come up with. Thanks for all the help and ideas.

It is rather a small drawing, but with a quick look...what if you brought the living room out even, with the kitchen? That would give you more space for accessing the back porch and still have plenty of room for seating.

Then, I'd move the opening between the kitchen and living room 'down' a bit, giving you more space for the banquette and eliminating that little coner counter, by the sink. This way, the main sink would be a straight run to the wall, no bend back. Easier for storage and flow, IMHO.

The island probably needs to be a little bit shorter, by the banquette, if you want chairs around the table. I'd leave the prep sink, though...that's a nice touch. This should allow you to 'center' you range/hearth on the new living room opening, but I think you'd only need to move it closer to the fridge, by a foot of two.

On the other side of the fridge, I'd put the double ovens, with a baking/buffet area towards the dining room. It also bring cookies/cakes/cupcakes that much closer to the kitchen table is DS and DD want to help decorate. Just my two cents :)
