Newbie finally has some babies!!!!! Now what do I do?
Comments (3)cynqueen - Yahoooooo! Isn't it a great feeling to see your first sprouts?! This is my 3rd year and I still get a thrill from seeing the new ones every day. Leave your lids on! If you have to, throw a sheet over them if you happen to get a really warm day and they're in full sun. We have more than a few nights coming that will still be below freezing! I usually starting taking tops off when the days are consistenetly in the upper 70's and the nights are in the upper 40s and lower 50s. I have never had "drying out" problems as we usually get more than enough rain during this time of year. Once the tops are off, they dry out much faster and that's when you have to start worrying about watering them, which can be a big hassle!...See MoreTotal Newbie SOS (long post - reposted from Herbs forum)
Comments (4)First off, lemon verbena won't survive zone 6 winters, so planting it in a pot is a good idea in case you want to bring it inside to overwinter. Thyme, as with sage, seems to survive anything and its growth habit depends on the type you bought. Do you have the cultivar name? Oregano generally survives my zone 6 winters, but seems to decline with old age. Mine needs replacing every 3 years or so. Also, its growth habit depends on the cultivar, but I would say in general it isn't too invasive to grow with pole beans, but you might not want to plant it with bush beans for two reasons: it probably wouldn't get the sun it needs and it might make it difficult to harvest the bush beans and also might overcompete with the beans a bit. I have grown herbs just about everywhere in my gardens but I seem to be happiest with them in 12 inch pots on my porches and deck. They are handier to harvest and you'll use them more and tend to take better care of them. That and bringing them in to overwinter, which can be done in an unheated garage for the most part. Don't give your herbs too rich a soil, deprive them a little of water and attention and they will do fine. There's some more people on this forum who'll be along in a little with more 'sage' advice for you, I'm sure. Marcy...See MoreHelp! This forum has got me so far but now tom is wilting!
Comments (4)Thanks all! I'm happy to say that the little fella has perked up since receiving some water. Perhaps it was just thirsty after all. Or root damaged and thirsty. In any case, lesson well learnt. Monitor water situation even more carefully esp when they are fruiting, and do not remove stake! In my defense, I had no idea at all it was going to be this big. I thought it would be a nice neat little determinate plant. But no, it's now growing taller than me, definitely indeterminate! Thanks again :)...See MoreA forum's worst nightmare - tomato newbie!
Comments (33)nyteeyes - yeah, i hope to hear from someone soon as well. my plants look even worse today! and thank you regarding the photos. :) speaking of photos... i took a lot more today. closeup of the leaves, which look far worse now: a shot of the overall plant, which i thought might help show where the damage is taking place in relation to the whole. i know this plant is still in a dark pot - it had been doing so well up until now that i didn't think i needed to change anything. new growth is green and fresh looking: this next shot is from the roma tomato plant i was posting about originally. it shows the way the leaves twist and curl up like little pigtails: in non-tomato news i noticed what seems to be my first female cucumber flowers. am i correct in this assessment? of course i also noticed what seemed to be whiteflies on the leaves, so i sprayed with a little soap and water (over and under the leaves)....See Moreluckygardnr
