He Deeje: There are tons of different Salvia that are not pure red. I was just wondering what would grow here in 5B (of course as an annual) and blend well with the Raspberry Wine Bee Balm and Coneflower. I want to plant something for hummingbirds there along with the Bee Balm they will love also. Hi a2Mon: I have Marshall's Delight still in its tiny little container (not planted yet). Would that look good in between two Raspberry Wine's? No-one thinks my Moonshine Yarrow would look good?? I am especially looking for something that would basically add color all early summer thru fall color for the front of the border in a few hours of full afternoon sun. Thank you very much for the rest of the suggestions everyone has given. I will have to look up the plants and see what kind of sun they require. My biggest problem is there is no-where in my front yard that gets a lot of sun. Big bummer, I am beginning to be sad :( .......... Thanks again everyone :)

A great many perennials spread with an underground root system and bee balm is one. But it is extremely manageable. If it starts spreading wider than desired, just sever the the outlying growth with your garden spade and remove. Or plant elsewhere or share with friends and neighbors. Bee balm looks best if in a sizeable clump so I would not recommend sinking it in a pot.....unless the pot you use is large enough to allow for a decent spread. You don't want just one or two stems poking up but several dozen!!

Yes, lots of ideas. You can go with annuals or choose a perennial that's the right height and a complementary color/blooming time, maybe a couple different flowers so you have something blooming more of the time. Dianthus, Blanketflower, Daisies, Four O'Clocks, Helenium, etc.

Zone 5b can vary a lot. I live in 5b Colorado. It's very dry here. I water my container plants every day. I use regular potting soil which holds much more moisture than 5-1-1 does. I fertilize with water soluable fertilizer once per week.
