That is the truth. Thousands of square miles that look like the dead of winter. The green in the pics are a few hardy weeds that managed to pop up on a water run from when we got one of our half inch rains (about 2 of them in the last 9 months). Its that kind of stuff and what ever is growing under irrigation. Everything else is brown from being dead, dormant or dirt.

That's exactly what I have including the sown webbing and grommets except mine is 30% shade. The 30% really isn't much shade. It's hardly noticeable when underneath. I think either would work for most fruit crops. I'd definitely go 47% for berries, maybe apples but probably not pears that like more heat. Either one will exclude larger insects like stickbugs and would probably help on codling moth if well sealed. There is another very similar that has the weave heat set in place. It might do better on excluding insects especially after a few years. Mine does have some holes and areas where insects might get through after 30 years use. I don't know if the heat set polypro would be as durable but would consider it if buying more. PS: The fabric does need protection at points of unusual pressure. So like on the poles supporting my melon screen I've tied cloth around the pole top. Between poles is one wire. No wear on the wire but the pole sticking up an inch or two higher needs the edges softened. I'll post a picture of that if needed. Here is a link that might be useful: heat set polypro shade cloth This post was edited by fruitnut on Wed, May 29, 13 at 12:08

what chili has good flavor and moderate heat?

I suggest you go one step beyond what HotPepperDad suggested and mix sweet and hot peppers to the desired heat and flavor. you can still go wrong in getting the desired heat if you add too much of a hot pepper, but it makes the task much simpler. I could never get much flavor from my hot peppers although a few of my habanero customers tell me that they tolerate the heat in order to taste the outstanding flavor. I won't risk the heat so I just add a little of the hot pepper to ripe bell peppers that I have grown to enjoy. If you need to use only one pepper than I'd suggest a red-ripe hungarian wax type. Also, many of the newer hybrids in all varieties are much milder than their older counterparts. Some of the newer serrano and jalopeno hybrids have very little heat. Check with any of the seed companies for newer- low heat hybrids.

Have you ever tried to just throw a few grape tomatoes into the ground and see what happens. I've done this with different types of tomatoes and have been pretty successful. Probably the best time to do this is in the fall.

Royal Empress Tree in West Texas

Arizona Cypress and Italian Cypress along with Afghan Pines are some of the most successful trees planted out there. They should be able to survive on just the normal rainfall after 2-3 yrs. of supplemental watering to establish. Cedar Elm and Bur Oak (big leaves)are two deciduous trees that should do ok there. Of course Mesquite, Arizona Ash, and Hackberry should survive there, but are not normally considered desireable (but you may want to consider) Might look at what others have planted that have done well and perhaps see what the local nurseries are selling for that area.

This whole mess with the unusual weather patterns this year is becoming just a bit scary to me....

In Texas & Oklahoma the ranchers are being forced to sell off most of their herds because they have neither the feed or water to sustain them while in the midwest the floods have wiped out untold thousands of acres of grain & corn, and by the time the mud dries enough they can get in the fields it is too late in the season to re-plant.

To top that off, with the new laws concerning illegal immigrants the farmers in Georgia can't get pickers to harvest their crops and I am sure Florida will soon be suffering the same problem if they are not now.

For as much as we are finding photos of that barren land interesting now, I am sorely afraid that be late summer or mid winter we will be taking photos of barren shelves in the grocery store.

Nice pics, both of you.
I can't imagine how you are suffering through this long hot, dry spell. Not that you have a choice, I guess.
Here, we've had some hot weather, but a whole lot of rain, too. The river is high, we'd have to wade to get to the pontoon. I so wish we could send some of it south.
