Well, we moved in 10 days ago and I gave myself a challenge - get rid of the moving boxes and THEN you can start on the yard. Yesterday the shovel, HD bags and I went at it. There are more dandelions and creeping charlie in this yard than one could imagine! I started digging out weeds and grass for where 1 garden will reside - must finish that area today. We're getting a concrete patio broken up and taken away this week and that will be part of garden #2. This house came complete with a whopping 10 hostas - don't know the types yet, 5 tulips and 6 daffodils. I've got a long way to go! Fortunately, our realtor's neighbor started me out with some vintage lilies earlier this week. I've noted the details on the local plant swaps and will definitely be attending. We've also got to make a trip back to the Twin Cities the first weekend of May and there is a GREAT school plant sale up there that weekend, so I'll be shopping there, too. As much as I'm searching and asking around, it just doesn't seem that there are as many charity plant swaps/sales here in Chicago as there are in the Mpls/St. Paul area. When one is starting virtually from scratch and in an old house that needs some restoring, balancing the budget is a huge consideration. But, back to digging weeds I go! At least i'm outdoors!!!

While I encourage corrections, e-mail is preferred as listed in header. Will do my best to answer some of your questions. “Irene Watts” is a Hybrid China 1896; it was changed and has to be exhibited as “Pink Gruss an Aachen” a Floribunda as the >>>>> indicates, similar to many other rose changes on the list. It’s also shown in the Floribunda class, as “Pink Gruss an Aachen” helping avoid any confusion. “Glendora” in the Hybrid Perpetual class should have had >>>>> indicating to See: “Joasine Hanet”. “Joasine Hanet” a Portland without the date 1882 but >>>>> indicated an addition to the name was missing. On subject of “Joasine Hanet”, In today’s May 2005 list of supplements to the 2005 “AEN”, I have “Joasine Hanet” listed as missing a DQ rose indication in the latest AEN, the entry should be DELETED. Working off two lists, ended up with “Joasine Hanet” and “Johasine Hanet” data, the latter of which is listed as a DQ in the 2005 an AEN. Another rose to DELETE is Pam’s Pink a “Found” rose that was to be removed from the 2004 list. I could not find “The Portland from Glendora” in the 2005 AEN, but there was a “Portland from Glendora” See; “Joasine Hanet”. Without knowing your involvement in roses, if you just like to grow roses or are also involved in exhibiting them. If you just grow roses, the information on the garden web forum will keep you posted on corrections and some of the new roses introduced. If you exhibit roses, there are rules and regulations everyone must follow. One rule has to do with the using the correct names of a rose. This is where the 2005 Official List of Approved Exhibition Names “AEN’s” comes in. It is one of the official ARS publications, which judges and exhibitors use to verify a roses name. Released in March, is supplemented each month with information from ARS publications until the next years AEN is published. Not every one that exhibits roses belongs to “ARS” and receives ARS latest publications. This is one reason for listing the new names of roses on the GW Forum and keeping these posts up front where others can benefit from them. Once posted to, moves the post down the line. Ramblinrozez I can guarantee my Gardenville is the all-in-one, which is why I use it, Jim. I know it has fish emulsion, compost tea (probably alfalfa), seaweed, all the goodies. I don't have to get all those combinations. It makes everything complete for a rose dummy like myself who doesn't have time to make all these homemade mixes. However my interest in DrammaticK as a foliar is because! it uses raw fish oils instead of being cooked out as an emulsion and I'm thinking the oil and sodium is hostile to blackspot. RamblinRozez, Karl the rosarian and other specialized rose gardeners do swear by fish emulsion and alfalfa as what roses truly love best!!! They grow exhibition flowers and do rely on those nutrients as well. I use Rosetone, but it does only a itsy-bitsy fraction of what my Powerhouse Gardenville does. Every time I do my feedings I see immediate results! (huge burst of new growth). Also Ramblinrozez, it depends on what kind of roses you have. Hybrid Teas demand!!!! specialized feedings. Your neighbor probably has that knockout. Please Harold and Jim forgive me for saying this but what really bothers me about knockouts is that bees don't care for them and they have absolutely no fragrance. Knockouts are everywhere! and sort of hamper the variety of roses we encounter. They are found in every single apartment complex, in front of every fast food restaurant, across every neighborhood placard), in the malls. They're like the the Walmart of roses instead of visiting a boutique store. It's like eating a Big Mac instead of fine dining at a special-occasion restaurant. So again to each his own. LOL! Both have their own purposes. Harold I will gush and gush over your absolutely lovely roses except for the knockout, hee-hee. So Jim you can reach out and smack me on the head, hee-hee!
