Grits

My DS and DIL brought me a bag of stone ground grits from a recent trip to Charleston, and it's been sitting on the counter for several months.

I'm a Yankee, but I went to college, briefly, in Richmond, Va, where they had grits in the cafeteria three meals a day. I tried, but I couldn't choke them down for love or money.

I tried them again when we lived in South Carolina for about a year, and had the same reaction, they were just awful.

I finally broke down and made them tonight, with cheese, to go along with the sautéed shrimp for my DD birthday dinner.

What I've discovered is that pretty much anything improves with butter and cheese! The grandkids actually ate them, and they hate everything. But they have no history, like we adults have, of really not liking them. But even DD and I found them all right.

We'll probably use up the bag, but it's not a food I will seek out.
