Edward Sawtelle - Fab read!

I don't recall if we have discussed this. A few months ago I read an excellent novel called The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, by David Wroblewski . It is very well written, well-told, and haunting, about a boy who is mute, whose family has bred extraordinary dogs for a couple of generations. The story is based on Hamlet in plot, but will appeal to anyone who "knows" dogs and dog training. Not a warm and fuzzy book, but heart wrenching.

"This will be his earliest memory," "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle" says about its title character. "Red light, morning light. High ceiling canted overhead. Lazy click of toenails on wood. Between the honey-colored slats of the crib a whiskery muzzle slides forward until its cheeks pull back and a row of dainty front teeth bare themselves in a ridiculous grin."

Looks like it was released June 2008. Sounds interesting.

This book has a lot going for it, but if you decide to read it, be prepared for a terrible, hateful ending that did not have to be that way. For me, it ruined the book. Had I known, I would not have chosen to read it.
Take a look at the reviews on Amazon if you are deciding whether or not to read it.

I enjoyed Middlesex, too. It's hard to answer "what's it about?" b/c it's about so much, the hermaphrodite story line is only a small part of it. It's about identity, immigration, nationality, relationships, family, life in America... wow. It's just a fantatic trip of a book! I agree, it took several chapters to convince me to stay with it. But then I couldn't put it down. I sent it to a friend. Kingsolver fan here, too. And, Betsy, Botany of Desire is the most entertaining non-fiction I've ever read! It was informative and interesting, but also downright funny in places! He can really tell a story! I read it years ago, but there was one part that still makes me grin when I think about it. I won't ruin it, you'll know it when you read it! LOL!

In order to get through more books, I have decided to read as many as I can have going at the same time - that way if I'm not feeling awake enough or in the mood enough to read, say "Wolf Hall", I'll pick up something different. I am currently reading David Gemmel's "Troy - Lord of the Silver Bow", the first in a trilogy. Well-written but I don't lose myself in it or reach for it every chance I get like I do with Barbara Gowdy's book "Helpless". Very disturbing subject matter but I like the way she writes; great character development and I feel like I am getting a real glimpse inside a truly disturbed mind (the mind one of her character's, not the author's :c) This is the first book I have read by her and I will definitely read her other books now. Also read "Match me if you can" a romance/humour book by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. She came highly recommended and, although romance is not my favourite genre (too formulaic/boring), I did enjoy it and would look for her other books. It was like watching a nice romantic/comedy movie where there is actual chemistry between the two leads. A nice beach, vacation read (warning: some adult content/language).

Sarah and Doriann, I finished Motherless Brooklyn. It falls into the category of "A good book which I did not greatly enjoy." I always think of this style as hard-boiled, sort of a 40's detective genre. The book was well-written and interesting and I would recommend it--and I will. I still think the Tourette's part made it more difficult for me, heartbreakingly so. As far as never knowing someone with Tourette's... well, maybe you have. Lionel's symptoms were extreme and quite rare, fortunately for most Tourette's folks. Too, while the age of onset is usually in the pre-teen years, the syndrome can go into remission or become mild as one gets older. Sorry for if this is sounding like a public service announcement but I sometimes can't resist, especially as whenever this is portrayed on the (stupid) television, it is always in the extreme. Years ago when The Far Pavillions first came out, it was very popular and was hard to get from the library. I finally found it on the shelf (and I worked at that library too!) and took it home. It went back unread at the end of the borrowing period. This happened a few times; for some reason, I just couldn't sit down to read it. Finally, my sister in law gave me a paperback copy as a birthday present and it again sat on my shelf unread for quite a while. One day, bored, I picked it up and started reading it. Hours later, my eyes closing despite my efforts to stay awake, I put down the book with only 60 or so pages to go and fell asleep. I finished it the next morning and couldn't understand what took me so long to get into it. For those who think Tolkein is too wordy, Rosefolly explained it much better than I could. She said he wrote as if the books were being presented orally. (Rosefolly, you explained it more clearly in a much earlier post.)In other words, his works are meant to be read aloud. If you listen to an audio presentation of LoTR, you will hear this.

We just discussed possibly reading this in my book club. We ultimately decided against it because the Amazon reviews (which are usually right on) were so mixed. It is a long book -- too much investment in time for our group if the book is iffy.

We did read Marley and Me though and really like it.

The book is not 'iffy' it's an excellent read not to be missed. The ending is appropriate for the story, and I give the author credit for avoiding a trite or predictable ending in favor of one that packs an emotional punch. It's a very thought provoking story, exquisitely written.

I just finished this book. I bought it based partly on your recommendation and also that of another friend. I found it to be an amazingly poignant book. The author's writing is beautiful, and his descriptions of the bond between a human and dog is so insightful. Thank you for posting this thread.

Yes, the ending was difficult but, in my opinion, it was right. Yes it could have had the fairy tale ending in which (without giving away too much) the bad guy gets caught and the good guys all live happily ever after. But why? Personally I get tired of books (and movies) that always have the same predictable and boring ending. Like cynthia, I admire the author for ending it the way he did.

I will be reading this one again. After I lend it to several friends :)

Beautifully written, extremely sad. I wouldn't recommend the book if you're in a difficult time in your life.

Guys,

Did you grow up reading literature? I understand that reading is a matter of taste, but many great works are complicated, to say the least. All of Shakespeare's tragedies, for example; Tale of Two Cities, by Dickens; Henry James's novels. There are more.

Not all stories have happy endings, and in life that is sad; in fiction, it is kind of vicarious, as happy endings.

This kind of reminds me of the parental uproar about the wildlife documentary The March of the Penguins. Parents and Disney-reared folk recoiled.

It was about Emperor penguins in the harshest environment in the world. Duh.

Then Happy Feet came out, which satisfied them.

I love good reads, and have no patience for nonsense. So if anyone wants to exchange good titles with me, I have a bunch!

Well, it does help me to know the ending ahead of time since I prefer happy endings to tragic ones. If I chose to watch (or read) the story, at least I am prepared.
Real Life is indeed filled with happy endings and great literature has nothing to do with whether it's tragic or not but whether it's well written and not formalistic.
