Get a herbicide from the garden center, soak the plants and wait for them to die. Do not overspray and poison neighboring plants. The foliage soaks up the chemical and carries it to the roots. String trim the dead stuff to the ground. It takes me 3 weeks or more. By that time the herbicide would have lost it's impact. It doesn't sound 'nice' and doesn't look good either, but it works.

Lisa, I love the chickens and daffs! What kinds of chickens do you have? Blooming right now: Viola (everywhere as usual)including a nice scented one that I planted last year and was happily surprised to see this spring. 2 quinces-a pink and a red-cultivars excape me at the moment. The pink may be 'Cameo' but I'm not sure. wisteria-one raceme open slightly now 3 types of dicentra-'Gold Heart', common pink and fringed 'Kasagi Yama' japanese maple lungwort 'Mrs. Moon' the usual tulips and daffys ajuga several viburnums lamium cherries 'Van' and 'Early Burlat' apples 'Early Cortland' and 'Ark Black' asian pears 'Chojuro' and 'Shinseki' plums 'Santa Rosa' and 'Burbank' some pretty purple weed that smells like mint (oh no!) but doesn't look like it has runners like mint. I'm not sure what it is although I'll probably regret not pulling it up now. I was in Florida last week and what a difference a week makes here! Plants that weren't even up before I left are going strong now. I'm glad to see that I lost almost nothing to the winter other than some DA roses (my favorite 'Ambridge Rose', 'The Prince' and a 'Abbye de Cluney' darn!)
