I have a 3 season porch, unheated, with fake wood paneling that I originally painted about 22 years ago. It's been repainted as my decorating needs change. Never have had a single problem with paint peeling, cracking or flaking. It's probably held up better than any room in the house!!!

Someone loves that wood paneling, huh?

That's just what I was hoping to hear dlm.

I don't think my MIL loves it, but who knows. She had someone paint it in one of main rooms and she loves it. The stuff that was painted was a different type of paneling that was more like fibreboard (quite porous). I'm even willing to do the work and pay for the paint - yes, I am desperate to get rid of it. I'll try to convince her again this summer. Maybe one of the kids could 'accidentally' spill something on it :-)

as long as you prep and prime correctly I believe temperature will not affect it. But we have a similar situation with an in law cottage in michigan. the upstairs is all fake wood. drives me nuts too. All I know is that you can paint anything as long as it is prepped well and since our cottage is not insulated or winterized either i dont think youd have a problem. I mean we have a ton of differing material painted items, and tongue and groove wood that has had the same paint on it for 30 plus years and it still looks fine. good luck

Our lake cottage had every room with wood paneling. Some real wood, some fake wood. Painted every square inch of it and it looks great after 6 years.

I would think that if you used exterior primer and paint and you would be fine.

Ask at a paint store.

And another thing...... ;-) Painted fake wood paneling adds great texture to a wall and there's absolutely no guilt about covering real wood that someone may someday cry over!

If I remember correctly, I primed with Benjamin Moore Fresh Start. After that, it's just been interior paint, eggshell finish.

Good primer and good paint will work fine. I asked the pros about interior versus exterior paint when doing the inside of my unheated shed. They said either would work as it isn't exposed to weather. I used leftover Benjamin Moore paint from my living room. Still looks great 8 years later.

Whenever I wonder if I can paint something, I remember my friend saying
'have you ever tried to remove paint that you've spilled or dripped?
At one time, it seemed like if it moved, I painted it.
Even have painted (stenciled, and splatter painted) a tablecloth to use as window covering..went thru wash just fine. Painted our river cabin plywood floor with a brick pattern and held up fine.
Mom tells me her mom used to paint her kitchen linoleum every few years
FYI, even hung wallpaper on that cabins paneling and never a problem with it due to the extreme changes of temps.
