aspirating a lump

Hi.

My dog is a neutered 3 or 4 year old Shar Pei - perfectly healthy except for this one blemish.

On one front leg, he has an al dente (smile) lump - about 1 inch in diameter and about 1/2 inch deep.

I aspirated it and, assuming I did it right, I just got out a little bit of clear fluid. I'm curious, other than getting pus out - which would indicate infection, I assume - what does aspirating tell you and what are the things that might show up in the syringe?

The lump seems to slowly be getting bigger so I'll be taking him to the vet soon.

thanks

vicky
