I wouldn't get excited too much by one incident. I'm assuming you were able to clean it up? The only time we have found turds where they shouldn't be is when they have been VERY hard. Found three about two weeks ago right next to the box. Found a really large one about a foot away yesterday. I can't believe a cat could pass something so large and hard. Ouch. So, since it had fur in it we have started up on petromalt.

If you think it is the bed, maybe make an effort to make sure he feels special. Is there a special toy, blanket - something that he likes to snuggle in that you can put by the bed?

Cats do not do anything out of spite. Confusion, fear, uncertaintity yes, spite no.

We have had him for 6 years,so if you're implying my cat had any reason to be scared that we would get rid of him,you couldnt be further off the mark! I'am simply saying if this becomes an all the time thing,yes,I will have to find him another home.Like many other people on this forum,I cant have an animal who does this with no logical reason behind it.

My sister's cat has ruined three apartments by pooping and peeing everywhere. My sister has spent hundreds of dollars taking the cat to vet and no problems were found!!! The vet said it is a BEHAVIORAL problem.
I cannot go through all she went thorugh...having to shell out even more money to pay for apartments the cat ruined by peeing on walls and carpet.The furniture she had to replace again and again because the cat destroyed it.

Of course I would not get rid of my cat because of one time. Of course if it continues I will try all I can before deciding to find him a home elsewhere. But I will not go poor and have everything ruined because one day a cat wakes up and decides to no longer follow the rules.

It seems like a behavioral thing my cat did,because it was so far away from his litter box.The litter box is in my bedroom. He pooped out in the living room,towards the entrance of the kitchen RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE TAKEN APART BUNK BED.

People logic and cat logic aren't necessarily the same.

There could be some odor/residue from the bed that you took apart that smells like a logical place to the cat to poop. As bean_counter said, animals are not spiteful -- at least, not cats and dogs.

Try to clean/disinfect that entire area with enzymes (from pet store) or vinegar, etc..

Was the cat tested very recently for urinary tract infections?

Hi coolmama. You are probably right about the cause - but I think maybe slow down a little. See how he is over the next couple of days, make kitty feel extra special. It will probably blow over. If not, there are lots of routes before you would need to go broke. Good luck - whatever happens. I hope it works out.

Whoa, take a deep breath. You sound like you are pretty upset about one incident. Please don't automatically jump to the assumption that the cat will continue this behavior or that it will ruin the house or that it is not "following the rules." Cats don't follow human "rules." They act instinctively. Your cat went outside the litter box one time. If this is the first time a six year old cat did this, you are unusually lucky and you've got a gem of a cat. Most cat owners are familiar with the occasional outside-the-box behavior, as also with the occasional vomit or hair ball on the carpet. Expect it. If your cat does begin a pattern of such behavior, start to investigate the reason behind it. Have your cat checked out medically--painful elimination, constipation, or many other maladies begin presenting as odd bathroom behavior. It could also be a behavior issue as, indeed, you suggest, due to uncomfortable changes in the cat's environment or other stress levels in the house. Watch for any patterns that develop. Take care not to yell at the cat or stress out yourself, because it may contribute to a continuation of the behavior. Above all, don't go ballistic, threatening to give your cat away for one all-too-common incident!

I'm not trying to jump the gun here...just thinking of all my sister went through. Her cat was seemingly fine too until one day and then ruined 3 couches,carpet,walls,her bed.The cat is STILL doing it to this day.She even took the cat to the pound,decided she couldnt do that,and went back to get her cat. After that the cat stopped for about 3 months and started again.
I was upset because I love my kitty boy alot. I just hope he doesnt start acting like my sister's cat.Which of course is the worst case scenerio. Mostly likely it was some accident or he is upset we are getting rid of his top bunk.
My husband seems to think it might have been stuck to his butt and just ended up in the living room.

I think your husband may be right on the mark. Once one of my cats had such a thing happen to her...she's long haired with "pantaloons" and I know it just stuck to her and came off in the dining room. I had to start "lubing" her up with petromalt. She hasn't had an incident since. I bet you anything this won't happen again...

what an ARSE, for pointing out a spelling error without a sugestion on how to help her. She may be over reacting to a one time incident, but there was NO reason for your comment, it was useless. I hope her kitty is fine and all goes back to normal as soon as it finds another "comfey spot". Geeze, are you a retired spelling teacher? get a life!

Who cares about spelling. I figure this isn't my work where spelling matters. I'm a sloppy typer and frequently have spelling errors because of it. Who cares??? That isn't what the forum is about.

Impacted or infected anal glands can also be a cause.

Have the vet check them to see if they have to be expressed. Especially if this continues and/or you see your cat "scooting" on his rear.

Hey coolmama - how did the cat do after another day?

Hey guys,silvergold,he did fine today.No more poopsies,LOL.
He seems alot happier too,and more lovable.
Sorry for over-reacting.I tend to always think the worst about things.Sort of a defense mechanism. I was mostly just venting cuz I almost stepped right in it with bare feet,LOL. He is a great cat and a good friend,and I cant imagine my life without him.
I'll let you all know if it happens again.But I think maybe it was just stuck to his butt or something.Anyways,he is due to a check up,so it couldnt hurt to ask the vet.
