I put a bleeding heart in the shade under a mulberry tree in April or May. It was a luminous chartreuse green almost all summer. In the past month or so it has gradually turned yellow and now it is almost completely gone. It has all turned brown and died back except for a few very tiny leaves on one stem and that one looks like it's headed in the same direction. Is this normal? It is next to my huge elephant ears. It seems that as they got lusher, my bleeding heart got punier. Could it be the mulberry tree? I also planted a beautiful Siberian bugloss close by which thrived at first. Then quit blooming and then one day I went out and the entire plant was black and dead. All are in total shade. Can anyone help? Thanks.

It depends on how far advanced coming up your plant was. The plant should send up new shoots in a while. Replant for now. When I did something similar only a few shoots came up in July but by the next year it was fine. You might go ahead and post the picture.

I wouldn't expect much growth as it's just settling in. FW's suggestion is good, even to mulching it for a bit of protection against drying out before it establishes. You can never prevent the odd fly-in grasshopper, but they are a bit of a magnet for snails, even tiny ones can ruin a leaf, have a look around, some may have come along as eggs.

Any herbicide that is sprayed on has an ability to drift - that is, move with the breeze/wind to any neighboring plants. And depending on how much wind might be present at the time, the drift can be significant. So absolutely no need for any trespassing to occur. This is a very common occurrence with regards to pesticide damage on plants in a garden that are never sprayed directly. "One other thing you can try is some roundup yourself . Spray a weed in your yard where it is out of the way. Compare the damage to the weed to the damage to the bleeding hearts plant." Well, this approach is not really going to accomplish much of anything.....except a dead plant or two :-)) Direct spraying of a plant with RoundUp/glyphosate is going to produce a much different result than exposing a plant to herbicide drift. Herbicide drift seldom results in the outright death of a plant but can create distorted, stunted or abnormal growth.....much like we see in the OP's bleeding heart. Unfortunately, this is an issue I encounter very frequently as a horticultural consultant visiting client gardens - folks are just not as careful using herbicides, especially ones as common and popular as RoundUp/glyphosate, as they should or need to be.
