Do you remember story about Aprons?

I thought I'd saved the wonderful story of describing the many ways our Grandma's used their aprons.

Hope someone who has it will repost it; met a lady today who has some that belonged to her G. Grandmother hanging on a wall and would love to send it to her to go along with them.

Grandma's Apron

I don't think our kids know what an apron is.

The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.

After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men-folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

How true! I remember my Grandma's apron so well. Mom wore one too, but not the same feeling.. Eggs, baby chicks, garden veggies, wood and even baby kittens.

Nope. Don't believe in the Bermuda triangle jinx. But there are other factors that seem benign, but can become dangerous very quickly. For one, there are a lot of boats and private planes in the area, and that will up the odds of mishaps. A medium sized sail boat might go out for a days adventure and be totally unpreapred for what may happen. Its a big ocean and a 40 ft sail boat can suddenlty seem too samll in a squall, or if blown off course, not have enough resources to return. They might find not enougb food and water on board, or that the radio was not maintained and does not work, and no backup radio. Some 'sailors' are lost if they loose sight of land. Small planes are easily lost due to any number of factors. Around where I live, we are land locked, but at least twice a year, a private plane either crashes or force lands in untoward places. The accident is duly noted and life goes on - no big deal. But if the same event happened over water, it can become a big mystery because no one finds any pieces and can not determine what happened. Just last summer, the Coast Guard fished out a couple of people who ditched a small plane in Lake Michigan. The crash was known immediately because it was seen by a number of radars of airports and the Coast Guard. A life boat was dropped within 15 minutes, and the Coast Guard rated it a close call, because they say 15 minutes is the survival limit in that water. Lake Michigan is quite cold even in summer, once away from shore. What's one common cause for dropping an airplane in Lake Michigan? Its running out of fuel!

I think the first real item I made was a yellow plaid roll-up sleeve blouse in Home Ec. I had no clue that matching plaids would be that involved. Since I was in high school in the 60's I remember making a 2 piece lined wool suit like Jackie Kennedy and of course had the matching pill box hat. Next I made a dress out of a pretty green dotted swiss. We didn't have room to cut out our garments in the Home Ec. cottage so we were taken into the cafeteria to use those tables. When I started making my dress I realized that I had not only lost the back pattern piece to my skirt but also the fabric. My Mother and I went back to the store to buy more but they were out of that color. I ended up replacing the back of my skirt with white organdy and applied a white bow in the back of the waist. What had started out as a rather plain dress became a nice church dress which I wore for quite a while. The dress that gave me such fits turned out to be a favorite of mine. Now I really LOVE to sew and also enjoy "thinking outside the box". Some things are made special because of the work involved. It makes you appretiate the results.

Zalco, I haven't been to Terun, their crust looks delicious! Thanks for the rec. FYI, I don't consider Round Table to be great pizza, but it's close to my house and nostalgic. Pizza Delfina is really good and Vesta in Redwood City is where I go for creative toppings. Now that I think of it, Menlo Park doesn't have any great pizza places but I live in the next town over so if I'm lazy it's there or Redwood City. I grew up in Palo Alto and love to reminisce about all the great restaurants up and down El Camino, University Ave. etc. that are now gone. It's amazing that Round Table is still going strong. I especially miss the "old" Mings before they switched to mostly dim sum. I think we went out for dinner more than a lot of families. I could name 50 restaurants from Mt. View to Menlo Park that are now gone. I miss the good old days! I bought a small pizza oven but making the dough from scratch seemed more trouble than it was worth. Never tasted as good as the better pizza places.

DH was born and raised around the oil fields of Oklahoma and wanted land around whatever future home we bought. We’d (or I’d) looked at over 100 homes and lots when a patient of his told him about a lot in a mountain community with incredible views AND gas lines and internet ( a VERY BIG BONUS out here!). He packed us a gourmet picnic lunch ( with chilled white wine, my fav) and drove us out here. Smart guy! As we dined, he has gave me his vision of our future dream home on this multi-acre lot, surrounded by thousands of acres of pine trees ( and other homes). As I was born and raised in the suburbs north of Detroit on a lake, he knew he'd have do for some serious sweet talking to get me out of the suburbs here! I caved. . . with one caveat: we had to have multiple covered portals (patios) so that I could sit and relax in the shade somewhere, no matter what time of day. We built our dream home on this very lot and 27 years later I’m still loving it! But, I am very thankful for the many shady portal we have . . . and our drop-dead gorgeous mountain views!
