Avacado ??

Can you freeze them? We just got a huge, huge bag given to us by a friend DH works with...this is the second bag in 2 weeks. We just finished the first batch. They are not ripe yet, I have them in the pantry in paper bags until they ripen. I just don't want most of them to go bad before we can eat them all! We love them so it's no problem in small quantities....I've made guacamole and we've had it on everything from sandwhiches to salads so far. The boys and So's don't care for them, so it's up to DH and I :O)

I just wondered if once they are ripe can you freeze the guacamole, etc???? If not we have a lot to eat right away!

I'd appreciate any recipes too!!

I don't think you can freeze them, but there are things yuou can do to keep them from ripening as quickly. (cool dark place, fridge, etc). I am not exactly sure but I am jealous. My cousin has a tree and he gets bushels of them every year.

I don't know about freezing them.
I love them sliced, with salt
    Or filled with tuna
    Or filled with cottage cheese
Or spread on toasted french bread, or an english muffin or a bagel

Now I MUST have an avocado. I'll be right over!

    "Freezing Avocadoes
You can freeze mashed fresh, ripe avocados if you want to have an "emergency supply" of avocados on hand for guacamole.

To freeze, mash the avocados with a fork. Add one teaspoon lime or lemon juice per avocado and mix well. The best way to freeze the prepared mashed avocados is to use a freeze-weight zip lock bag. Fill the bag with the mashed avocado. Remove the air from the bag and then zip closed and freeze.

Thaw the frozen avocados in the refrigerator or place the container in a bowl of cool water to accelerate thawing."

Avocados are one of my favourite foods! I use them with just about everything. :) I've never frozen them but I just did a search and found this....

Avocados are best frozen as purée  unsweetened for salads and sandwiches, sweetened for other uses. Avocados are not satisfactorily frozen whole or sliced. For a better quality product, add 1/4 teaspoon (750 mg) ascorbic acid to each quart of purée or add 1 tablespoon lemon juice for each 2 avocados.

I don't think you can successfully freeze them but they're so versatile. You can make an omelet with avocadoes or I love them with chicken salad or on any salad for that matter. Wish you could mail me some. They're costly out here & sometimes not too good when you buy them.

You can't freeze the whole fruit but you certainly can freeze the guacamole. You can freeze plain mashed avocado also. Just be sure to add about a teaspoon of lemon or lime juice for each avocado. Seal them up airtight and thaw in the fridge when you are ready to use them.

I don't think you should freeze them. I think you should get some shipping peanuts put them in a shoe box and mail them to me. I'll send you my address.

    I love 'em. LOL!

When we lived in Hawaii our friend had a huge tree and she didn't like them. She would bring shopping bags full of avacado's to us. I would mash them and add some lemon juice. Then when I put them into a container I would add the seed into it and freeze them. When I wanted to make something I would just thaw and finish adding ingredients for guacamole or whatever. Wish I had a freezer full of them now.

While I was in FL at my Dad's I bought several of the huge FL avacado's and ate them everyday they are so huge and soooo good.

Thanks! Exactly what I wanted to know....mash them first and freeze them. I have always put lemon juice in them mashed so they don't turn black, but we have never had so many at once before.....I'm ih avacado heaven! We must have 30 in this bag and the last bag just a little less! I love to eat them alone with a little salt, but would love to add them to recipes now that we have so many at once. DH took sandwiches to work for the last 2 weeks just to use them up. We love just veggies and avacado on whole grain bread, but I don't want to get burned out on that. Beleive me we have used them for everything we eat...but would love to hear more ideas! I think I will try to freeze some when they ripen....good time to experiment I guess!

I'm in agreement with Gayle, but send them to me!
Yes you can freeze them in airtight freezer bags as other's have suggested.Sliced avocado on toasted wheat bread with mayo, tomato slices and sprouts....Yummy!
Love avocados but haven't been able to get many good ones so far.I bought 8 for $1.00 in NM a couple of weeks ago and ended up throwing away more than half. They were all bruised even though they were still fairly firm. I was so mad.
I saw on TV the other day where they used avocado puree to replace half the fat used in a chocolate chip cookie recipe. They said the taste can't be detected and even though it is still fat it's good fat,and they can be used in most any recipe to replace half the fat.
The seed trick will prevent Guacamole from turning dark also.Don't wash the seed first though.

My favorite way to eat them....

    Toast a wheat bagel
    Spread with cream cheese
    Top with sliced avocado
    Top with salt and pepper

They sell guacamole frozen sometimes so it can work. Better to try than to lose them. I OD'd on avocados early during my pregnancy. I'm not sure when I'll be ready for another one.

OHHHH I love avacados but as someone said buying them is tough. Usually they arenot good....I wish we lived where you just go and pick them!! Lucky you...Stacy

I am so jealous. When we lived in FL, we could get the huge bright green ones, as opposed to the smaller almost black ones. Love the big ones best. In fact, this past fall, our stores were carrying the FL avocados and they were so good, we ate some everyday for weeks. One avocado would last for 3 days, they're so huge. And they're good for you, how about that!

I love avocados. I bring a few back from CA with me. I make a sandwich with them, sliced avocados sprinkled with salt.

We used to have a pretty good sized avocado tree but the heavy rains one year took it out. I was bummed...my neighbor grows them in pots and sells them...thats how we got it. I would love to have another one but Dh said we have no room for it now...we have since planted 3 more trees. His friend and our neighbor keep us supplied but this year we have tons from the friend tree.

Oh man...now I gotta go to the commissary and see if I can find some avocados to stop this craving! LOL

We tried to grow an avocado tree & the ground in our part of FL was too "good" for it to grow. LOL We never heard that in TX. I like turkey sandwiches on wheat bread with Miracle Whip, tomato, avocado, bean sprouts, & lettuce. Mmmm...so good. Being a Texan we lived on guacamole. Avocados are a staple, aren't they? :]

I got to thinking that I left out part of the sandwich. It has a couple of bacon slices & some swiss cheese, if you please. They make these in a deli we like!
