jemdandy, I recall my grandmother making kraut and pickles in crocks--unfortunately none of mine were inherited from her. She would take a lid from a smaller crock, so that it fit inside the pickle crock, then weigh it down with a clean stone or brick, wrapped in cloth, to keep the cabbage or cukes below the level of the brine. Thanks, triciae, I was hoping that I had a treasure! :[ If you left a link, it didn't make the jump, but I'd love to see more pics. I googled 'sharp eared crocks' hoping to find info on the potter, and found this informative site. Scroll down for American stoneware. I think I might have a cream pot: "The stoneware cream pot ... appears throughout the eastern seaboard down through the Carolinas and west to Indiana. This vessel, illustrated here, has a high shoulder and wide mouth, where the shoulder slopes in slightly to a flat, shaped rim. There are two semi-cicular(sic) lug handles on the shoulder. The interior of this vessel was glazed with Albany slip, which was more common in the North. They were made in sizes from one to five gallons. They were often used to separate milk from cream and to store cream. Many of the vessels had an incised line at the level of the handles."

Hi Lisa, If it suckers—and if it was coming up thru pavers I assume it does—all you have to do is to look around the “outside” of the plant for “small” plants that are rooted and can be (hopefully fairly easily) dug up and potted as separate plants. I think that might be easiest to do when it starts actively growing in spring. If you can’t find suckers, I’m not sure! I suspect you could take one of the longer (and smaller) canes and bend it over so it’s touching the ground and “attach” it to the soil at some places, or bury parts of the cane slightly in the soil, and wait to see if roots develop at those points—I think that might work, but I’m really not sure! Maybe some other Rose Person will be along with more “rose expertise” than I have! I’m not really a Rose Person! But I know some folks around here have started them from cuttings, just have never done it myself, so not sure of the best way! David, can you start them in straight perlite? Here’s how to get your “real name” back! Go to “your page” (don’t know what it’s called now!), click on “edit profile,” then put your “original GW screen name” in the “first name” box, and if you want to add your zone and location, put that info in the “last name” box! Strange system, but it works, and at least there IS a way for us to Continue To Be Who We Are! Houzz said, or at least implied, that anyone with the same name as somebody already on their site had their name changed—but I have a HARD time believing there was already a lisaluwho on their site!!! I think pretty much everybody had their name changed! If you want to stop getting all the MAIL—when you discover that you are getting all the MAIL!—on the profile page go to “advanced settings,” and change all the boxes to “NEVER!” If you come up with any other questions, post them on the “RMG – How do I do it…” thread I started. After the rain photos, plus a guessing game ...

Joey and Lorelei, you are right! Who'd a thunk sansiverrias could be appreciated for their delicious fragrance? Not me anyway. Annie and Joanna, no -- you do not get to be jealous of the rain! ... LOL Because, on average Austin gets about three inches more a year than San Antonio (you lucky people :-) and not only that it's comes more regularly. So enjoy it! ... :-) Lorelei, after I learned what a wafer ash looks like I saw one growing less than half a mile from my house! I looked for seedlings, but couldn't find any. I did collect some seeds to share. Pam, thanks for enjoying my yard with me, and that goes for all of you. Much appreciation.

Doris,

That's a common mistake around here. People say I live in a banana belt. Wrong, our Island is in a rain shadow. Not any wormer then Seattle, just dryer.

Back to the plant: It's a small fruit, reddish, size of a table grape. The plant is a nitrogen fixer

Eric,

An Olive tree?

The leaves look similar to my Autumn Olive.
The flowers look similar too, but mine has clusters of blooms, where your plant has single blooms.
Mine doesn't produce fruit.

Something in my gut told me "Mr. Horticulture" (Kt) would guess correctly. You're GOOD, Kt!

So the Neil Diamond song is "Cherry Cherry"?

Winner!!! Kt,
I was wondering when you were going to chime in. The Elaeagnus multiflora I have is called Sweet Goumi. It has more and better tasting fruit.

Julie, your Autumn olive is a Elaeagnus umbellata.

Yes, other common names are "Gumi" and "Cherry Elaeagnus."

I want one. It should grow for me down here.

I have 1 and would like 6 more.

Julie,
This is the song.

Gitchy goomy, gitchy gaddy, sit you laddie down on your daddys knee,
And aint it a nice place to be?
Goggin noggin, papas rockin like a mockin bird in a windy tree,
And that aint no place for me.
Been there one time, been there two times,
Been there three times more than I care to be,
But were gonna make it through, gitchy goomy.

Life is good, life is fine, life is warm,
Life is kind, can you see it?
Love is great, love is right,
Keeps you warm late at night when you need it.
Baby boy, daddys joy, lifes a toy,
But you dont wanna break it.
Like a sweet symphony, all you need is the key, you can play it.

Gitchy goomy, gitchy gaddy, sit you laddie down while I have my say,
Now dont be runnin away.
Goggin noggin, papas talkin
Dont go walkin off like you mean to play,
Well, you can have it your way.
Been there one time, been there two times,
Been there three times more than I care to say,
But youre gonna be o.k. gitchy goomy.

Been there one time, been there two times,
Been there three times more than I care to be,
Seen it one time, seen it two times,
Seen it three times, lord n its plain to see.
Ah, you gonna make it through gitchy goomy.
You n me gonna make it through gitchy goomy.
Ah, you gonna make it through gitchy goomy.

Eric,
Now that song I don't remember, at least not from the words. Maybe if I heard the melody I'd recognize it.

My Autumn Olive came with the property we bought. I didn't know what it was for a few years. Just happened to find it browsing the internet. The flowers are incredibly sweet scented. I understand the plant can be invasive in our area, but I'm not worried because there is only one in a large meadow that we keep mowed.

That was fun, even though I didn't win.
