Are you balanced?

or symmetrical? (I know some people call me Unbalanced! lol) for home decorating I mean. lol

I'm a balance kinda person. I don't want everything

all lined up ... a mirror image of what's going on on the

other side. I like to throw things up and step back and take a look, then add something to it to make it look

balanced I guess asymmetrical if you will.

I'm balanced in a design but symmetrical in my approach. If that makes any sense. I know the power of threes in design.

I am definately NOT a "one on either side of it" decortaor.
I may not know about some of Jodi's high-falutin words, 8o) but I do understand the power of three.

I actually work hard to add something "extra" so that I don't have the "expected" look. Inspite of that principle, I have one large picture alone over my couch. I love the picture, but hate it alone. I just haven't yet found that ONE tall thing for the right side of the picture.

I like "groups" of things, but not "sets" of things.
It sounds like we probably decorate about the same.

I love color and think about it a lot. I read about it too. I do a lot of work with fabric, and color matters there, too, so it is something I pay attention to. Generally warm colors do well with other warm colors, and cool colors with other cool colors. Certainly there are times you can break this rule if you are skilled in color. However it is easier to get good combinations if you do follow it. There is a solution for you, but it will mean some work. You could designate an area of your garden for your emerging love of yellow. It could be the front garden or the back, or if you have a smaller space on the side that gets sun, by all means use that. In that space, transplant out all the cool colored flowering plants -- cool reds, cool pinks, blues and purples. (More on that later.) Leave any flowers in warm colors, including coral and salmon pinks, which go well with yellow. Then when ever you get yellow or other warm colored roses, just plant them there. About the blue -- you can do a blue and yellow garden, I've seen it done to to great effect. You have to be careful to keep it unbalanced, by which I mean significantly more yellow than blue, or significantly more blue than yellow. When the two are in equal proportion it somehow looks, well, dull. Also, if you have an area that is completely pastels, you can get away with blending warms and cools. The paleness of the colors seems to do the blending for you. But that means taking all the bright, rich, and saturated colors out and planting them elsewhere. All this is a lot of work. I'm a whole foods person and consider whole foods the original "FAST FOOD". Why peel, boil, or "cremate" it when all you need to do is wash, slice and serve. I'm more likely to be found in the kitchen baking bread and other baked goods, so between a large variety of homemade breads (fresh and stored in the freezer), cheese, an assortment of fruit and veggies, add a meat or meat substitute, and you're ready to eat. I like to use a lot of whole grains and legumes in foods. The freezer is my friend. Cook once and freeze in user-friendly size containers. Take out the night or morning before it's needed and thaw in the refrigerator. Heat and eat. I use a loosely structured menu pattern for the evening meal only. Breakfast and lunch generally don't take a lot of planning at our house. I can switch up any one night for another without upsetting the whole thing, but it gives me a general idea for meal planning and grocery shopping. MONDAY: Big Meal (this could also be during the weekend when you have more time). This includes a large portion of meat (roast beef, turkey breast, meat loaf, etc. and all the trimmings. From the leftovers, I provide for other meals during the week. The meat is sliced, ground, or shredded to be used for sandwich meat, added to salads, casseroles, soup, etc. TUESDAY: Leftovers from Monday. It may or may NOT look like the original meal. Roast beef may become hot beef sandwiches, bbq beef, hash, etc... Mashed potatoes are made into potato patties, etc.... I also freeze dollops of mashed potatoes for easy fixin' for another meal. WEDNESDAY: Stir-fry. This can be a good way to use bits and pieces of veggies and leftover meats. Cook extra chicken or beef and use it in salads and wraps later in the week. THURSDAY: International. How about tacos (with taco meat from the freezer), or taco salad... Meaty Spaghetti sauce from the freezer. I cook ground beef stroganoff and freeze the stroganoff in small containers. All you need to do is prepare the pasta of choice for spaghetti or noodles (I also like penne pasta) for stroganoff and heat the topping. FRIDAY: Vegetarian. This can be everything from a great salad with beans to breakfast-type foods. I make bean burgers and keep a stack of them in the freezer and they make a great vegetarian meal served on a homemade multi-grain burger bun (found in the freezer), a tossed salad or sliced veggies and Ranch Dressing Dip, plus fresh fruit and cheese. SATURDAY: Soup and/or Sandwich. I keep a variety of soup/stew/chili in the freezer in single servings so we always have a variety. They make quick suppers or lunches. Top a baked potato with chili. Chili can also be used in a taco salad (similar to Wendy's). Use tortillas for a wrap. Good old tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches.... SUNDAY: Homemade pizza (I use a simple whole wheat sourdough dough recipe for the crust) or a salad meal. This is a good way to use up small amounts of veggies, pre-cooked hamburger or other bits of pre-cooked meat. We also have "scrounge night" on Sunday. That's another way to clean out the leftovers in the refrigerator and freezer.... Eggs are also a Sunday night choice. If they are already hard-cooked and in the refrigerator, use them for egg salad or sliced eggs to top a salad. Toast and boiled eggs or toast points and poached eggs, scrambled, veggie omelet or fritta. Add some tomato slices (or other veggies) and some fruit and you've got a meal. -Grainlady

Moving total alkalinity down is one of the hardest things about pool maintenance. I never had to do it with my first pool - TA, once set, stayed within range. In my new pool I'm not quite sure what the builder put in - I should have paid more attention. But by the time my SWG started up my TA was at about 180-90. To lower TA, you have to use acid to lower the pH to the bottom of the measurable range on your test kit (but not below, very important), which will decrease both the pH and the TA. Then, DO NOT use any form of pH up, including Borax, to get your pH back in range - if you do so you are likely to bring your TA back up along with it. Aerate your water the best you can - with spa jets or waterfalls, if you have them, splashing a lot, or an means you can find. That will slowly increase your pH without increasing your TA nearly as much. When the pH has risen a bit, lower it again with acid, aerate, and repeat until your TA is in the range you want. At that point you can let your pH drift upward to where you want to keep it and then start maintaining by more normal means. Doing this, I'm down to about 130 TA now, but it's taken ten days since I have bottom returns and am relying almost exclusively on purposeful splashing and the aerating effects of the SWG itself to get any aeration. I expect to be at this for at least a week more. Pool stores will tell you to "slug" the pool with acid, but that doesn't really work by itself - you need the aeration to bring the pH back in range without raising TA. Do a bit of research on poolforum.com (semi-defunct, closed to new registrations but full of good info) and troublefreepool.com and you'll get all the information you need, and more - they seem to have a base of more technically-minded users than this forum. B.M. Metallic Silver would be a great color to work with the rustic tone, but bring in a more modern feel. It isn’t just wall paint that will work magic, you want to continue with lighter tones with fabrics and rugs. This last photo is a fabric that an etsy vendor uses for pillows….so gorgeous…Asian and modern. Had to share.

It depends on what room I'm decorating. For the most part, I'm a 'mirror' decorator - I like things to be grouped, but I add 'odds and ends' so it ultimately looks 'unbalanced'. I live in my house, so I put things where they work for ME.

I tend to arrange thiungs in groups of two or three. does that make me balanced?

totally unbalanced. even in decorating..every thing has to be lined up. lol yes anal. i can not watch tv unless the remote is lined up with the laptop. i will wake up in the middle of the night knowing that...and it usually will take a frieght train to wake me up..move that remote and i know lol weird i know..and i sleep alone..

I'm a function over form person. I like symmetry when it doesn't interfere with function.

I do the power of three thing to add interest and balance.

I don't like sets of things either. I like grouping of things that complement each other.

I would never have a set of matching lamps or even light fixtures in a room for example. But they would have something in common either in finish, a color or design but never all three.

I'm a extremely symmetrical person living in a absolutely asymmetrical house.

Bad, bad feng Shui, and it's driving me bonkers.

I like pairs of items for the symmetry, but enjoy putting out groups of three or five items of decor...such as three candlesticks on a sidetable.

In my quest for some sort of balance in this house, I've recently re-done the bedroom. I moved DH's chest of drawers into his dressing room (camouflaged as the den, LOL). That allows me to center the bed under the larger window, add two matching nightstands, two matching wall-mounted swing arm lamps, two matching curtain rods, and two pair of matching (but different sized) drapes. Of course the two windows in this room are different sizes.

A dresser is centered at the foot of the bed, and the bed is centered on its wall, but the dresser looks off center on its wall because of the off-center closet.

Lordy, I have my hands full.

The "atmospheric" changes since moving everything around and adding all the "pairs" of items has been palatable. The room is so much more restful now. I'm really not crazy!

I'll probably put a group of three candles on the dresser and possibly hang three pictures over it.

I don't like "things" on display, but one small grouping won't bother me and I would like a colorful picture in there.

I always end up balancing things when decorating. Then, I go back and look at whatever I've done, from a distance, and hate it. I usually think my decorating tastes are dull and boring but it seems I like courage to be really bold with decorating. I love bold colors but when I'm painting, I usually go for a safe, neutral color.

Balanced. Symmetrical. A group of things can balance one large item -- they 'weigh' the same. A bed can be balanced by two non-matching night tables or chests, with two non-matching lamps that are the same height and 'weight'.

In the last ten years or so I've noticed both too much furniture in rooms and overscaled furnishings. I think manufacturers started making oversized furniture for the oversized rooms in McMansions. In one furniture showroom I felt like Edith Ann in Lilly Tomlin's sketches; the chairs were ginormous!

"Am I balanced?"

I'm not sure that I can give an adequate answer.

Sometimes when I see someone carrying a shopping bag in each hand when exiting the supermarket, I remark that, "No one can accuse you of being unblanced, at least!" ... and usually I get a smile in return.
