I don't know where on 40 you would be driving, but there is some roadwork going on with huge sections of the highway closed in Missouri (around St. Louis). Here is a little more info:

On January 2, 2008, five miles of US 40 in St. Louis was closed eastbound and westbound from Missouri Interstate 170 to Missouri Interstate 270. It will be closed until December 31, 2008. On January 2, 2009, another five-mile section will close both ways from I-170 to the Kingshighway exit in the city.

Sounds like your life will be filled with lots and lots of pictures!

Congratulations, have lots of fun! My dream was to buy a motorhome and tour the US lower 48. But I've been derailed by kidney disease, I need dialysis three times a week, so no traveling for me! But I plan on getting a transplant at some future date.

Lydia, thanks for the heads up. We had heard of the road work thru there and have our trip tik thru AAA, and will check with them again before we go. We sure don't want to get headed the wrong way with that thing! Please keep me posted.

I'm a pretty fer distance from St. Louis but have been there twice this week. Maybe if/when you get over this way we can meet up. Also, check MODOT's website and other states websites for road work.

tami, bless your trip...you're starting a life dh and i have wanted for the longest time...

have you been to utah before? it's a beautiful place...we had the best adventure once...we had taken a detour to moab to visit arches nat park...well, instead of doubling back to the freeway, we drcided to take this little road east...it was lovely at first till it got more narrow and ended up as a one lane wooden bridge! omgodness...thanks be we only were driving a car, and made it across!

Ok here's the deal on internet access otr (on the road). Check the welcome centers especially the security ones, they should have free internet and you might have to go inside to get close enough, some of them have really good reception. The one on the Oklahoma and Texas border via I-35 has great reception but the welcome center in Wichita Falls has really really really slow internet service (was there this weekend).

I also use my cell phone to get online but you will need a service through your provider for that so you might check that out.

Some full-timers also use a satellite internet service but for us it's way too pricey so just getting online once in a while with my cell is great.

Now then go forth and have a good time lol....and when you get to Texas stop in and stay a while, Lake Texoma is close and so is Lake Ray Roberts, and of course my drive way is always open ;0)

P.S. My ex- had a 25 footer for a number of years, had spent from just around Christmas to mid-March travelling from FL to TX (and for a few years to AZ when our daughter was there) spending time with folks that she'd met earler during those travels.

She traded to a 19 footer a few years ago ... and just got to use it a couple of times before she became ill with colon cancer - how ironic for her, who'd fed millions as head of food service at a substantial psych. hosp.

Our young ones had no real use for it, so sold it (for a substantial reduction: someone got a bargain). It was something under 2 years ago, I think - too bad they hadn't known that you were in the market, Tami (if you were, at that time).

I got a slap on the wrist, here, a while ago ... for writing up on KT (more eyeballs) a doublewide trailer home about halfway down the west coast of FL, not far from the water, that someone had written about over on the "Retirement" forum (it was at www.buygramshome.com, if I remember correctly - asking about $29,900., I think). Some suggested at the KT at the time that we should take up a collection and buy it for a KT clubhouse!

Sorry I have not got back to you, but I have had that virus almost 4 weeks and just now feeling good. Missed my trip to Washington DC.
My DH bought a Garmon GPS from the internet and he said that is the best investment he has ever made. It is small, hand held etc. You might look into it. When he calls tomarrow night, I will try to ask him which site he bought it from.
Anyway, on your food, I found that if I matched the stuff from the house I did good. I also used Tupperware/Rubbermade to store stuff. I loved to go into different food stores across the country. I made sure I had the basic=chicken noodle soup, catsup, soy sauce, chicken broth, and when we did go into a eating place, I tried to pick up the small size serivings of condiments. I use lite Mircle Whip, mustard, noodles, rice, cold ceral, individual packs of potato chips, and don't forget the baggies, and paper goods. I did not do much/any baking, because for the amount of sweets we eat, I would rather buy local home baked stuff.
Don't forget soap, I use dawn, and antibactial spray, soap for clothes, and bath, etc. When we first got ready each year, I just went thru the kitchen and looked for basic staples. Don't forget the check the medicine cabinet ==band aids, anti bacterial cream, brushes combs, etc.
Again go thru each part of your house.

If & when you get those wheels headed to sunny FL-and you plan on visiting 'Mouseland'..there's a fabulous RV park right in Kissimmee-close to everything! Has 2 pools, patio restaurant, General store, etc & great RV lots!
Many many nice ones here on the Gulf of Mexico as well 1-3 miles from the beach. Just drop me a line and I'll send info.

I told DH about how the list was growing, and all the invites we had. Especially in the south. He said it sounds like a Nov, Dec, Jan trip! Who knows! He hasn't fully retired. YET!
