Teaching Dog to Stay in Yard w/o Fence

So . . . I have a nice neighbor, but she lets her sweet medium-sized dog run all over the city. I'm about to google for articles detailing how to train your dog not to do this and, hopefully, find a way to diplomatically suggest to her that she work on this. I'm wondering if any of you have any suggestions for sites or articles on this subject that you know of and like that I can offer to her?

google "boundary training". it's pretty intense work to make it successful and i seriously doubt this owner is willing to put the time and effort into it.

are there leash laws where you live?

I think training the neighbour will yield more positive long-term effects than attempting to train the dog. Here, Animal Control would have long since levied increasing fines for failing to control her doggie.

We have a 4mth old puppy (Foodle). We both work 1hr from home and cannot come home to attend to Burt during the day. He is has full run of our garage which is an internal access garage, fully insulted (we live in New Zealand) and has all his toys, bed, water etc to keep him occupied and safe. We have a young girl who comes by twice a day to take him outside for walks and to feed him his lunch (he's still getting fed 3x times a day). She does this 3 days a week and the other 2 days he goes to doggie day care (which is loves so much he never wants to leave!). We also have a webcam in our garage which provides live streaming, so we can see him. I can assure everyone that most of the time he either plays with his toys or sleeps. We believe we have done the very best for our wee pup to ensure that he is not cooped up all day and that he gets good socialisation with other dogs, and because of this he is the most well behaved, adorable, loving family member. We would love to spend all day with him if we could, but we think we have provided the best arrangement for him and us. I would recommend for those that worry about your dog being stuck home all day, to invest in someone to drop around at least once a day to walk and play with him/her. A small amount of $$ to give you peace of mind and for your doggo to have some outside play time, is worth it.

Juat remember your dog can not defend itself against other creatures which may come into the area. I just want to relate the story of my friends dog who was chased out of its yard by a dog pack. When it tried to get back in, it was shocked. The dog was stuck outside all day. WHen the owners came home and figured out what happened they brought the dog in. Now the dog will NOT go outside, it refuses unless someone is with it. The dog has been traumatizes beyond belief. If you have the money to spend, get a treadmill, your dog can get use to running on the treadmill everyday, if you can not take it for an off leash run. By the way. I have a tip. Have a friend go walking with you, get one of those really long leashes or use a small rope. Tie it to your pup and when you see that your pup is not paying attention to you go hide. Have your friend ask your dog, Where is daddy, or whatever you want to be called. This game of hide and seek should be rewarded with a bit of a treat when your pup finds you. I have done this with my dog and my friends dog when they were puppies. Now we dont have to worry about the dogs taking off, they watch for us in case we hide. Which we do now and again to keep em fresh.

She's ignoring him and he's already decided she's not much fun. They'll coexist but I don't see them being great buddies for a while. He LOVES the cats! Focuses on them like he's a border collie, not a smooth collie. He doesn't chase although he will pounce a little. He noses them, stares at them and taps them with the back of his paw like he's saying "Hey! Move over there!". Hysterical herding! They'll work out the dynamics and I'm sure they'll all be fine but right now he has upset their calm little world. I think it's good for them. Last night was his first night in the house and it was a little rough on all of us, but funny at the same time. Even after 2 walks he wasn't ready to settle down at 10pm and kept pacing around checking things out. We don't know him well enough to be certain we can trust him yet so we were watchful even though we had him confined with us to just a small part of the house. Ticki-ticki toe nails on bamboo floors, followed by cat growls and hisses, followed by him retreating to our bed to get away from angry cats... crazy! We would get up, put him back in his cozy bed and tell him to stay. That would work for about 1/2 hour and we would be right back to ticki-ticki, hiss-hiss again. It was a long night. Today we'll try him out with the crate and see if it makes him nervous; they said he was crate trained and that might be a good solution to his night roaming - at least until he's more used to the house.

We don't have a fence (not allowed in our Neighborhood Association) so the dog is only outside on a leash attached to me. She's not a digger, but her rawhide bones that she chews on get slimy and are always damp - awful to step on, which I seem to do on a lot of occasions. :P Better than her chewing on other things more valuable (like shoes, cords, etc), so she gets her chewy bones and I have to make more of an effort to not step on them. ;) At 13 years old, she's got her habit(s) and I've got mine. The holes in the yard can really only be filled - I'd be tempted to use rocks, but dirt is likely the better choice.

My dogs are boundary trained. It depends on a lot of different factors for success. For example, some dogs just can't help following their noses off the property.

My own method is basically having well known boundaries erects so there's a clear line to not cross. You can use little red flags, a line of bushes, whatever. Then working on a dynamite recall. Every time the dog ventures near the line, I recall them back and praise like crazy. I also walk the line with them and reinforce them for not crossing over. Then you proof by having people and dogs and whatnot to tempt your dog in the distance by walking by and you reinforce the dog for not crossing the line.

All this teaches the dog the line they shouldn't cross. Any time the dog is taken over the line, it should only be when you release them to do so, WITH you. You can have them sit and stay at the line and engage your release cue word for them to know it's okay to step over with you.

Nice neighbors don't let/allow/encourage their dogs to poop on someone elses's yard.

Watch where the dog goes, and if it wanders onto more yards than one, check out the animal control possibilities in your area. Find out if there is such a public service in your area, and if you can call without identifying yourself.

You could collect the poop the dog leaves it in your yard, and deposit it on their sidewalk, or take it to the front door.

But be advised that problems can increase from any action you take, period. One guy I knew hated dogs pooping on his lot, and he related one incident. He said once outside he admonished a dog walker to collect the poop just deposited, and guy ignored him, so he picked up the poop and flung it at the guilty party.

Not a very nice thing to do obviously, but it was a simple way to convey that the guy felt strongly on the subject.

In my area local ordinances require that stranger dog poop be picked up by the dog owner.

I couldn't care less about the dog poop. That's not the issue as far as I'm concerned. I'm concerned about the welfare of the dog.
I don't, of course, think it's right for people not to pick up after their dog. They give the rest of us responsible dog owners and dogs in general a bad name.
In fact, I can't enjoy the many nice parks in my city - that MY tax dollars go to maintain - bc dogs aren't allowed in parks.
