Another foyer question!

Our foyer is more of a front hallway. It is very long and wide, but with an added twist: it has a dead end. It opens to the kitchen and the backroom (playroom now) but there is an empty wall that leads to nothing...no pics right now but I will try to add.

It basically is: open front door, you are in foyer...go straight into kitchen. Foyer wall across from front door, but second foyer wall to your left, like a big backwards L.

We had a wall of bookcases there but relocated them to the office...need decorating ideas!

Please excuse the mess. I am still putting things back together after our reno. The pictures are not staying there...please ignore the mess in the far corner as well.

I've read that you are not to clean the fiilter media...ever. I built my own biofilter...not a skippy but I am about to add one due to all the good things I have heard about them. My pond is in the stage of green pea soup also. I have heard it is a stage that ponds go through this time of year. I am trying the quilt batting. I have it in the top layer of my biofilter and it is catching quite a bit of the algae. I purchased mine from Michaels. I also am using it around my pump. I am letting it run two hours around the pump because it gets pretty dirty quickly. This works great to catch all the small algae. You have to be careful to not catch the batting in the pump. I guess we will see how good it works. I'm thinking about building something that would add some type of barrier between the batting and pump to avoid this problem. Probably a project for tomorrow. Good luck! If anyone has good ideas to get the pond clear I am open to the hints as well!

The window itself isn't a problem if your local code allows it. The window might make your hood higher than optimal however, and it can be dangerous reaching across hot pots to adjust the window. With induction you won't set your sleeve on fire, though. Moving the ducting for your hood might well be a bigger deal than moving the gas. The best way to know is to talk to your plumber and HVAC guy and get estimates from them. A range is usually the less expensive route. Plus, if you don't already have induction capable pans you'll need to budget a bit more for cookware (though sometimes they give a few pans away with the cooktop). Most people here report back after changing from gas to induction that they'd never go back. A few miss their gas or actually do change back. Most of the reasons are in the realm of it being too weird cooking without fire or otherwise missing the flame, or having trouble adjusting to setting the temperature by number rather than sight (flame height). Have you tried getting advice on your layout in the Kitchens forum? If you did, and didn't get much response, try again.

Kathie, this is going to be of absolutely no help to you right now, but I swear I have your foyer's cousin at my home. I don't have the two "closets" on either side of the entry door. I do have the open space to one side as you do, but where you have the french doors, mine is a solid wall. Everything else looks just like yours. As I said, cousin but not exactly a twin to yours. I have that ledge up there just as you do....oh, and all the oak, too. Okay, all that is nice huh? Problem is I am not at this particular house right now....I am at our lake home that we have been remodeling for the last two years. I may get to our other home next week and if hubby can teach me how to take and post pics, I will show you my foyer. I have the most adorable "circus people" on my ledge...hard to imagine I know. I have a curio cabinet where your grandfather clock is right now. I will say I think my space was little easier to work with as I didn't have as many open spaces as you do. Anyway, if you want and can think of it, remind me to show you your foyer's cousin. HA! It might give you a few ideas...or at the very least, be a little bit fun. My first suggestion would be to continue the wainscoting that is shown on the right wall. Right now, without it, it looks unfinished. I would treat that wall the same way as the wall on the right.

A big mirror with a very decorative frame and a slim double decker console table would work there great. Add in some decorative sconces or two buffet lamps and a tray for the mail and a bowl for keys and you're set.

thanks for posting the pics of that table, etc. I like your suggestions!

I really want to put some sort of shoe hiding furniture on that far wall...I am really in need of a bench/shoe storage in this house! thoughts?

You also have the baseboard heat problem (I love that kind of heat) so nothing can sit tight against the wall. Could you use the open table/mirror on the "heater" wall and put a bench/hall tree on the other wall (where there is no wainscoating)?

The wainscoting is kind of high - might interfere with large mirror/console table/lamp suggestions. I don't see an electrical outlet on the wall, either...

Your second post sounds like you almost want this space to be a mini mud room.
Why not run your boards all the way up on both walls - have a carpentar build you a pretty built-in type bench with drawers to put your shoes in. I wouldn't do baskets since shoes kind of smell and have alot of dirt on them. You could also put your coat hooks up alot higher.

I guess my real issue is what to do on each wall. I did have a hallway table/mirror and photos on that wall before we did the board and batten. The radiator is annoying. My biggest priority is shoe containment...I guess I should do bench / shoe holder on the far wall and I ca still put a table on the wall to the right
