Hello, hotpotatoe. Something is wrong here. I never have had to water newly planted hydrangeas daily as you are having to do. How much water are they getting? Are they in a windy location? Do they have mulch? Where in Texas are you located? What temps have you been getting the last 2-3 weeks? What is your soil like? Sandy perhaps? From my experience... you will always have wilting episodes here in the summer; it is just too hot and inevitable. Give them about 1g of water 2-3 times a week in spring to begin; increase as summer gets closer; decrease in the fall and decrease a little more during winter. During their first summer, check them for wilting as often as you deem needed. Once they are established (it takes a year for most plants) then you do not need to check them often since they wilt less often. Regarding wilting... if they perk up by bed time or the next morning, there is no need to water at all. This will be the norm here during the summer. If they look VERY VERY wilted in the afternoon or if they remain wilted by next morning, increase the amount of water that they are getting on a regular basis. When the weather forecast calls for lots of wind, provide them with extra water (one day only). Another concern: They are getting exposed to too much sun if they get shade starting at 3pm. While they can be in full sun in the northern half of the country, here in Texas, their leaves with fry and the plants will dry off easily during the summer. Choose a non-windy location that gives them morning sun only or dappled sun (under trees). I am in Dallas and most of my hydrangeas get shade starting at 10-11am, more or less.
