I like my carnaby a lot, but they fade badly in the sun. I have mine under a large spruce tree where it gets at most two hours of late afternoon sun. I have it in a container because it couldn't compete with the tree roots in the ground. As much as I like carnaby where it is, I do not think I would want it where it got direct sun anytime between mid-morning and mid-afternoon because it would fade too fast. I posted a picture in another thread to answer a question. You can see it here: Nelly Moser?. Just click the link and scroll down the page. I think you can make out the circumstances in the picture.

I love them. Sure wish mine got that size.

Does anyone have either of these vines to trade? Please check my list...thanks! Margaret

Thao Do, I have clematis in all colors. The majority of mine are viticella hybrids, but I do have some others as well, including Texensis, crispa and pitcheri. I also have a crispa x viorna cross called Haizawa that I got from Joy Creek a couple of years ago, and it has really taken off this year. I know many people like the larger flowered varieties best, and they do make a bigger show, especially when viewed from a distance. Personally, I find the smaller flowered varieties to be enchanting. Some of the smaller flowered viticella varieties (Little Bas and Pendragon) are extremely prolific bloomers, and in my opinion these types put on a good show - but once again they are more charming when one is closer to them than when one is viewing them from 30 feet away. It never hurts to experiment with varieties, and you may be surprised at what does well in your own yard. Everyone has somewhat different growing conditions, even in the same city -sandier soil vs. clay soil; sunny yards vs. shadier conditions; lots of tree root competition vs. little to no root competition; wetter soils vs. drier soils, etc.
