You can pot up to a bigger container or cut back the tops hard and remove about half the root mass from bottom & sides & return to the same container with fresh soil. I think if I was in your area I'd think seriously about adding a water holding polymer to the soil as well. If soil is drying that quickly, you should be able to fasten a reservoir saucer to the bottom of your container ............. never mind - I just realized you said baskets. I guess you could buy containers & ditch the baskets. You just have way too much evaporative surface in baskets for your growing area. ...great for growing roots, though. Al

Hi Ellie. I also have lots of hanging baskets and balcony containers. Anyway, what I do with mine is I water the baskets every day and I do them by hand with one of those 2 gallon watering cans and every time I water I use 20-20-20 or 15-30-15 at 1/2 of the recommened. This is optional because there are a lot of folks who just fertilize once per weeks and I'm sure the containers do just fine. Those containers have a lot of roots with a lot of competition and plants like the supertunias needs fertilizer. I love using the "symphony" series of osteos cause they are smaller but if they are deadheaded, they bloom continuously. Pinch the dead flower right off. The supertunias are easy to control because you can just trim them with scissors as much as you want to give the container a shaped look so it doesn look "scraggly". They like the "haircut" as well because it fill out the middle.

there is also bidens, verbenas, diascas, bacopa, lapis spernum, creeping zinnias. but they tend to try to take over.(the zinnias) you can do impatian baskets with lobelia and bacopa. they turn out gorgeous! creeping charlie, jenny, and the silver one that i can't think of the name. also vinca looks great in hanging baskets. nemesia, niembergia. where i work we do mixed geranium baskets and intermix all of the above. not zonal geraniums. 3 geraniums and then 3 of whatever you choose. if i could figure out how to post pics i would show you one we did. tanya

That's Pink Jasmine, Tressa, or sometimes called Chinese Jasmine (Jasminum polyanthum). But again, it also likes to vine more than trail, so you'd constantly be fighting its nature to want to grow upwards and along your hanging basket chains. And it is VERY prolific. Smells wonderful, but very vigorous plant, at least for us here in the coastal S. California climate. I considered it for my arbor/patio cover, but my landscaper and I decided against it due to it tending to look ratty and scraggly during a large part of the season. If you can get to it to prune, it's not bad, but I'm not inclined to climb up 10 feet to the top of my patio cover to clean it up :-) Patty S.
