Vaulted Hallway Ceiling: Proportion Problems?
Comments (11)All right, I think I've managed to cook up what you mean in terms of the soffit. (I'm certain the fault is mine if I've failed.) The biggest issue I can see now is the discrepancy in doorframe styles . . . not sure how to reconcile the pantry opening's lack of trim with the trim on the other three openings that are just a few feet away. Unless -- it just came to me as I'm looking at the new pictures -- I raise the bottom of the soffit enough to allow for trim? I definitely know what you're talking about regarding the cabinet paneling. Good tip. I'm going to wait to create it in the program until I figure out how to properly program all this soffit stuff, though. Right now I just have a 1' 8" "room" containing my kitchen cabinets. :-)...See More10’ ceilings 7’ or 8’ interior doors?
Comments (15)Another vote for 8' doors. My DH and I are very tall and boy, do I appreciate the extra height of an 8' door vs a 6'8" door. All of our other openings (without doors) are 8' also, with the exception of two. The passageway to our master bedroom and directly across the hallway to the laundry room is another opening where it's about 7'5". They were spec'd to be 8' tall, like all the others but due to a framing error around the staircase an 8' opening would have been too tall. We had to make a decision quickly....rip out the staircase (for the 2nd time) and change some 2nd floor framing or drop those two headers 6" (actually only 1 was needed but we both were needed for symmetry). Does it look funny next to 8' openings? Nope. I don't even notice it....See MoreHelp! Trying to decide window and door height for 10' ceilings
Comments (21)Al Birdseye, assuming you have an interior floor plan with all the spaces you require and an exterior design that goes with it, you've done a lot of work for a novice. Most people don't get that far. But don't build that design yet because you're only about 20% into the design process. A professional can put together what you did in minutes as a starting point then go through a lengthy process of refining the design until it's ready for construction. Hiring an architect to take over at this time is the safest bet but if you still want to do it yourself, be ready to learn and slog through the rest of the design process. One suggestion is to set your sight high by selecting an architect designed house as inspiration then keep comparing your design with his to gauge how close to the finish you're with your design. One story ranch houses aren't my thing but here's a good example:...See MoreI'll show you mine/you show me yours - W 10/13/21
Comments (21)Lars, if I didn't have a photo of it, I wouldn't mention it, but I'll take the chance to show off a photo of the real (original) doors......they're in the nearby museum...See Morekarinl
