Do you ever try a new drink and can't get enough of it? Well, mine right now is Nantucket Nectar Half and Half - half ice tea, half lemonade. It is soooo good.

I usedto love NN peach lemondade. But for some reason they discontinued it. I like their juices, but they're too expensive for me nowdays. I love their lemonade too.

Right now I'm into hot mulled cider--in the microwave with a stick of cinnamon. I need to get some apple brandy or applejack!

I feel for ya Vicki! I'm no where near a master gardener but I just about lost a beautiful succulent that had overgrown it's pot by transplanting it. Stupidly I put it in a glazed pot with attached drip saucer. DH came around and watered generously over and over a couple days leaving water in the saucer. Between too much water and tranplant shock, I've lost all but the two newest inner leaves :( This thing was 6" across and had about 12 leaves beautifully edged in red and laying like a cabbage. Now we're down to two 1" leaves on a long stem and who knows if it will bounce back:( Hard to take this when you have been babying a plant for several years - this one was 4 years slowly growing out of it's mixed succulent dish container. I also lost a fancy new verbena, a gazania and looks like my lavender is not far behind. I keep trying with the lavender but never seem to be able to make it grow. Thankfully all 4 of my clevelandii sage are surviving, a few just barely but one is very vigorously growing even in the heat. My fruiting Frederick passiflora looks great even in this heat. But I discovered this week that the few fruit on it this season are AGAIN hollow. Obviously we have to give more water than just enough to keep the leaves looking great in order to get edible fruit. I'm not sure the darned thing will ever give me any fruit after almost 3 years. At nearly 40' wide and 5' tall you'd think it would do more than just look green and pretty. Wishing you no more croaking this year and hope my luck will hold out too.

This one doesn't get much direct sun but is does get a lot of light. There were two Junes but the June on the right was moved as they filled in. The Hostalibrary says there is debate about whether there are two June sports being sold. I thought that for a while but I think June just changes so much depending on the season, light conditions and age of the plant. Check out Hank Zumach's June in the Hostalibrary. Favorite Beer to drink with Hot Peppers?

Mostly PBR consumed here... just cheap generic-ish beer. A fan of Atwater Brewing Co... their Hell beer is amazing. Mad Hatter Ale a favorite. Two Hearted Ale is very decent. For a hoppy hop beer I love Lake Superior ESB. It has been awhile but I make stout that is priceless. Hard to find good hops these days. Maybe the "coloring" of memory but it seems years ago the hops tasted better. As most brewers recall a terrible plague destroyed the noble hops. Not a huge fan of Cascade hops but Sierra Nevada with the green lable is a decent mid-priced beer. Also a fan of their Porter but it is very filling. Frankenmuth Brewery is about 45 minutes from my home. Years ago before the tornado hit it had the most wonderful brews... I drank many bottles of Bad Frog which was really excellent beer. When it was rebuilt I really enjoyed the heffe weisen they had on tap. It failed economically but has reopened and I've not tried the new brews. Really miss the old brewery which had a brew shop and tours.... for about $2 a pretty girl would lead you around the place and then serve you "samples"... I took many many tours... often the only guest on the tour. Years ago I loved Sam Adams Honey Porter... I'm a fan of the Porter style in general. Alas, they seemed to have changed the recipe or the hops changed. Perhaps my taste changed but it ain't the same anymore.

I think this is a good starting point. I looked for the recipe I first used but think it must have been on a rum bottle or?? One thing I've learned is to NOT put the mint in the simple syrup (when making the syrup) instead of muddling it. I did that one time per a friend's instruction and YUCK it made the mojito taste like mouthwash. In a 16 ounce mixing glass, gently muddle together: 1 large sprig spearmint .75 oz simple syrup Add: 1 oz of fresh squeezed lime juice and pulp 2 oz white rum (sometimes called Silver Rum) I use Castillo Silver 3 oz club soda or sparkling mineral water Top with crushed ice and mix until drink is combined and glass is frosty. I used to use club soda, but now use Gerolsteiner mineral water that I buy at Trader Joe's. I've tried other mineral waters, but it's the only one I like I'd not use any other...if you can't find it, use club soda and use a name brand, not a house brand. I like Schweppes the best. Izze Soda (fav flavor is Clementine). It's a natural soda, no sugar or artificial stuff. 70 percent fruit juice and 30 percent sparkling water. I love it because it isn't overly sweet.

Shaun, my grandpa used to drink Gin and Fresca in the summer, thanks for the memory! (In the winter it was Four Roses Manhattans :)

Don't have it often but I love Washington State Red Appletini. I have some cranberry cordial in the making, who knows that may be a new favorite. Any ideas what to do with the cranberries after it's strained? Seems a shame not to use them for something...over ice cream?

The Widow's Touch
Bon AppÃ©tit : September 2008
by John Gersten of Boston No. 9, Boston, MA

Yield: Makes 2
1 cup ice cubes
5 tablespoons Laird's Applejack
3 tablespoons St-Germain (elderflower liqueur)
1 tablespoon BÃ©nÃ©dictine liqueur
2 dashes of angostura bitters
Place ice cubes in cocktail shaker. Add remaining ingredients and stir 20 to 30 seconds. Strain into 2 chilled small coupe glasses and serve.

Dixiedog, that half and half mixture reminds me of an English favorite, a shandygaff (or shandy)--half beer and half lemonade or lemon soda.

Sounds vile to the uninitiated, but the next time you're hot and sweaty from cutting the grass, try it--the lemon lightens the beer, and the beer keeps the lemon soda from being too sweet. An excellent thirst quencher.

The Germans have a similar drink called a Radler.

I know this is a dumb question and probably hard to answer but what does a Widow's Touch taste like? I've never heard of Benedictine or St Germaine.

Is it a sweet drink? Apple tasting?
