frame and matt you photos?

I aways enlarge, matt and frame my favorite photos and hang them on the walls. I change them usually when the season changes. I recently put up some flowers that I had taken in my garden last summer and hung them in my dinning area.. It gives me hope that spring is right around the corner and adds some cheer to this gloomy weather we have had in this area lately. How about you?? do you display your favorites?? I have seen some real beauties..if you don't you should! lol

My wife matted eight different photos and put them up in the kitchen. Here is the latest pictures we put up, they are of our daughter - Daddy's eyes, Momma's Toes

One of the reasons that white mats are used so frequently is that it does not detract from the photo as does a colored mat. It also allows a more accurate representation of the colors in the picture/photo. That said, I do think there are many shades of white to chose from. I most often select more of a creamy, antique white than the stark pure white that you typically see in the premade mats. I agree, the grey only detracts from the photo. I could possibly see a warm red, matching the red in the fireworks if the white color family doesn't interest you.

The best I can suggest is to take the painting to the frame or craft shop and try it with the different mats. As others have pointed out, if you are going to use a colored mat, it should be a color that is in the painting so that it doesn't compete with the colors-- or darken the brightness in your painting. The colors you have used thus far are darker and less brilliant and suck the life out of your painting-- and the life is what makes it so special. I know this is counterintuitive, but I'd try a thin inner mat of gold-- not yellow gold but a metallic gold. It sounds like it would be too formal but I am thinking it might bring out the bright in your painting. It would have to be thin-- and still it could be an awful idea. You just need to try it. It is so hard to view and share opinions online because color and brightness are lost both in the photo process and on different monitors.. I really think you need to just try different combinations and when you have the right one, you'll just KNOW it. The painting will jump out at you and sing. Trust yourself-- as a painter, you can see and sense the right color combos. Don't be intimidated by matting.. just treat it as an extension of your painting. When the combo of mat and painting "works" you'll see your painting take on the life that you imagined when you painted it. Of course that is vague and provides no solid direction for you-- but what i am saying is to trust your artistic eye. When you have the right combo, it won't matter what any of us say because you will know it is right. :)

wonbyherwits, your framed photos are beautiful, original art. There is something about European architecture being sepia tone that makes it seem romantic and vintage - they look wonderful. Your color photo looks great too. I have done similar with some of my photos, printed them on my printer, and framed them with frames I purchased at Target or Michaels. Below are a couple of photos I took in Baja this past winter. They are hanging above my kitchen desk area. I manipulated them with a photo editing program to have more aqua color as that is my accent color. My photo editing program has the capability of making photos sepia toned, but I never thought of using it - I will have to try that, thanks for a great idea wonbyherwits. I have also taken some of my photos to Kinko's, had them blown up and transferred/mounted on canvas - another inexpensive way to obtain art for your walls.

wow, love those rooms, both of you. And great pics. I have thousands and thousands, I see mine mostly on my screensaver. But I have some framed and hung at home in MN, my favorites of my grandkids. And here in FL, I have a few hung. I have more I want to hang, but I can't find matching frames and mats in different sizes. I'd like to have them all match, so just the pictures would be different, like you both have.

I suspect I will have more to hang, or give away, the in-laws gave me a matt cutter for x-mas. I haven't used it yet. I really have been slow getting the camera out lately. I seem to be a little bit busier lately...

I often thought of getting a matt cutter. I can't believe I haven't bought one by now. When you get around to using yours, give us your opinion. I know what you mean about being busy..... work sometimes interfers with our hobbies doesn't it! lol

I purchased the Wall Words from a company I found on line called "Words Anywhere" You just tell them what saying, words, phrase you want in any color ,size, font you want and they will make it for you.It really looks just like someone painted it on your wall after you apply it. The service was prompt and I was very happy with the company. I have ordered twice from them and have no complaints. Their web sight has lots of good ideas and they will show you a preview of everything before you committo buying.
