I want to purchase my fist real camera. I currently use a Sony Cybershot. I want to be able to take sports pics (baseball, basketball, soccer), wildlife and children. I have never been able to take good baseball pics. I have very limited photography knowledge at this time. I want a camera that will last because this is a splurge! I won a raffle; otherwise I would never justify the purchase. It has to be less that $500. Also, I need to know if I need an additional lense to take the pictures. Thanks for your help!

I am looking at the Canon EOS Rebel XS DSLR with 18-55mm IS Lens. Is this a nice camera?

If you are talking about stadium photos, one of the high zoom point and shoots works well. Some venues don't allow larger cameras. You can get some great shots from the cheap seats with the new high zoom P&S's. I enjoy sports photos and have taken many.

I find both ways (running Kerdi through a corner or using strips of Kerdi or Kerdi Band) equally easy. I showed both methods in that Kerdi Shower thread, often times what I use depend on the layout and where the seams will fall. For this 36" by 65" shower, vertical will work. the Kerdi is 1 meter wide, about 39-1/2" or so. On your long wall, 65" divided by 2 is 32-1/2", if you do a 2" overlap in the middle of that long wall that leaves you with an extra 5" of Kerdi to run through each corner. Or a little more overlap (3") in the center will net you a little less running through the corner (4"). I buy through tile-experts.com and tileprotection.com For the wacky neo-angle corner, wrap the material over on itself as tight as you can and if you're really concerned, put a dab of Kerdi Fix on it. Use a pair of scissors and a piece of paper to get a size, cut locations, and folds that will work, then transfer that to a piece of Kerdi. For the corner pieces you want for your bench, if you're using a Kerdi Drain, often times a few corner pieces are included in the drain package. Ask your seller. Some sellers have been known to remove the corner pieces and resell them separately. Mongo

I think they'd look nicer over the transoms, but then you'd most likely have to go custom. Patterns would look nice since everything else is solid. Not overwhelming at all, IMO.

So I would look at doing a seating area that is angled toward the fireplace. This will free up space in the corner for storage or another seating area, etc. I would do Roman shades or blinds instead of the long drapery panels. I also would not overlay a rug especially if you do the angled arrangement. It will make to room feel chopped up. Also consider a large diameter but low profile flush mounted drum shade light instead of something that hangs down. Try it with your existing furniture. I don’t have all the necessary dimensions to see if it will work in real life!

This is a similar style as above, except even more streamlined with single pillow seat cushion, less tufting on back section. This Santa Rosa Linen color is beautiful. You could get two sofas in same color and add a couple of pillows and/or throw to vary the look, if you 'd like - or mix it up on sofa colors, as you have it now. If you wanted to be a bit bold, I think this Santa Rosa Pinot color would be gorgeous with the one above. More subtle, this Soft Platinum. All of these colors could work with your carpet and wall color. And there are more colors, too; this sofa comes in a bunch of colors, as well. If you go to the DPReview site (www.dpreview.com) and click on Discussion Forums at the left, and then go to the Beginners Questions forum, you'll find lots of questions and answers about Canon DSLRs, including the one you're looking at.

Although the DPReview members consistently recommend DSLRs over every other kind of camera, I sometimes question the wisdom of that advice. Too many people think DSLRs are going to take great pictures out of the box, whereas a considerable amount of learning is almost always required to get good shots from a DSLR.

I'm concerned that you, with "very limited photography knowledge," might find a DSLR overwhelming. I have extensive experience with photography, but.........Well, here's what I wrote in answer to someone else's question recently:

After a lifetime of using 35mm SLRs, I thought I'd have no trouble adjusting to my first DSLR. Wrong! I really need to put some time into reading the manual (more than once) and working on this.

I find myself reaching for my Panasonic Lumix superzoom most of the time because I know it's going to give me the results I want. I'm not sorry I bought the DSLR; it was something I would have to do at some point. But if I could afford it, I'd also get the latest version of my Panasonic.

So....... I can recommend the Panasonic Lumix FZ35 superzoom. The price is down to around $325, and all owners I've heard from are thrilled with it.

My older model, the FZ5, is good enough to have produced images good enough to have filled two exhibits last year.

thanks... I purchased a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H20. I got it at Sam's, so I have 3 months to decide if I like it.
