We had the same problem here in Ocala except it was ducks on ponds in the parks. There were so many that people couldn't have a picnic for all the poop on the tables, around the tables, playground equipment etc. They were going to round them up and gas them but people raised such a fuss that people with horse farms with ponds, agreed to take them. This is the second year for our duck problem.

Yep, it can be a problem. We have a lot of geese along the river in OKC. There is also a bike trail on each side... and we usually state when we ride along a specially dirty portion: The is the sh*tty part of the trail. LOL

I know, that doesn't help... but I wanted to share.

There was a duck pond at the university where I worked in CA. For years it was called the Duck Pond. It was a nice area to sit and eat lunch but then the duck population expanded and they annoyed visitors. The ducks were rounded up and given to farmers for their ponds. You can't keep flying geese out of ponds and there are still geese and ducks there but not as many.
For many years we had feral cat colonies on campus and the employees enjoyed seeing the cat and kittens but those, too, were eventually rounded up and given to employees and to the public.

Oh Kay, Georgy's the same way. When we go walking I have to keep yelling "leave it"!!!!! I hate to let her off leash.

I have a yard full of it. DH had about 13 geese which are now DS's. I say just get rid of them.

This is something of a vain hope, I expect ...

Cull 'em ... have them pay a visit to the abattoir ... then to the local food bank?

They are a pain here. AND they also holdup traffic, lots! When they think the other side of the street is better grazing, off they go. Doesn't bother them one bit.

I used to work at an office park that had a pond full of geese. They hired someone with a dog -- a Jack Russell, I think, who would come by every day and chase them off. It seemed to help because they did not make their nests there.

They are such a dirty nuisance. Another method was to stir their eggs. You can't just take away the eggs or they will lay more. If you shake up the egg so it doesn't hatch, the dumb goose will continue to sit on it until they give up. Of course, the goose may bite you while you are trying to get the eggs!

Shoot 'em.

I do think the little puff ball goslings are adorable. Too bad they grow up.

I'm pretty sure that saw a segment on the news(from around here in MN)that somebody used to collect the poop and make jewelry out of it. Yup, you read that right!!!

Maybe someone from MN also saw it and can chime in here and comment, so I don't look like a total idiot!!!!! LOL!!

When I was a kid we had a big flock of geese on the farm and they used to spend their afternoons eating grass on our front yard..which was fine cause we didn't have to cut the grass but,,,,the do leave those little piles which we affectionately called "Goose Grease"

When it got dark us kids would all play hide & go seek in the front yard....and the goose grease was often the handicapper as you slipped and went head over heels while trying to run for home base....LOL

I suggest dinner.

Have the same problem here at the state capital in Pierre SD. There is a lake with a perpetual water fountain and the water is always warm so they are there year round. At Christmas time we took our DGs down to feed them bread and they loved it. And yes they are canadian geese.

I used to be a home health nurse....made a call to a home out in the country.
I was walking in the kitchen and slipped....almost fell.
The client told me I had slipped on duck poop.
Same person was also seen by a doc I worked for after I quit doing home health.....she brought in a big tray of cookies for our office at Christmas.
The doc was about to take them home for his family when I told him about my HH experience.

I visited a landowner in southern IL countryside and he had the same problem. His house was on the edge of a river bottoms and he had a pond in front, about 1/4 acre. Wild ducks and geese visited his pond and pooped all over the place. His main concern was diseases the wild birds would bring to his domesticated flock of white geese. He claimed they could disease the pond, too.

His solution was a net. About the time fall migration begins, he puts a net over the pond to deny access to the water. If the wild birds can't get to the water, they loose interest in the ground surrounding the pond and move on to neighboring fields. This net does not lie on the water but is supported on poles to form sort of a dome shape over the pond. The net stays up all winter and comes down after spring migration is over. He claimed it worked for him.

Nearly all of the wild geese we see today do not migrate...

Back in the early 1960's Canadian Geese were on the endangered list and nearing extinction. There is a Wildlife preservation group called "Ducks Unlimited" that was formed by waterfowl hunters and they began a program of creating habitat and hatching Canadian Geese and a number of different wild duck species which they released into the wild all along the eastern flyway. (Major wildfowl migration route),

The problem today is that the geese that were hatched & released have little to no social interaction with the true wild geese, so they have not adopted the habit of migrating. To compound the problem, the geese that were hatched & released do not have the natural fear of man that is present in the true wild geese, so they have no problem with living on any available pond whether its out in the country or right in the middle of an urban area and as a consequence they have become a nuisance in many places.

They sure migrate through here. We border a wildlife refuge and they rest here leaving the goose grease everywhere. I read somewhere they were wanting to feed some kind of birth control. Wouldn't be pc these days. LOL
The golf course put out some of those shadow figures of coyotes, and they are so ineffective we have seen the geese resting in the shadow of the cutouts.

They are such a nuisance and a health hazard IMHO.
Many golf courses around here are using dogs to keep them away.
I don't see why they just can't shoot the darn pests.
Problem solved.

In one town near me, they used dogs for a while but bird lovers objected, so the dogs disappeared and the geese returned. Goose poop is just disgusting!

Ducks Unlimited is still with us - they're mostly hunters and anglers. Preserving wetlands and other habitat is a great idea, they figure.

Having them around all year is just another of the joyous results of global warming - in northern areas, that is: the southern folks used to have to put up with them through the winter.

Coating the eggs in oil works, also... as they need to breathe.

Those who are so deeply committed to preserving them should pay the farmers for the food that they eat.

Some years ago when a fellow was picking up apples in our orchard and Dad suggested that to be not a good/fair idea, the guy rather strongly suggested that not to be a bad idea - that they were just lying there on the ground.

He became quite incensed when Dad asked how he'd like it if Dad visited his house in the city and picked a dozen of his flowers ...

... and I'm not sure that he was willing to agree that it was about six of one - and a half dozen of the other!

Considering how humans pollute the environment and poison everything from the land to the oceans, I would think goose poop would be minor concern.

It's nothing minor believe me. My neighbor got two ducks and they had ducklings and later had more duckies. They are so cute but a mess. Two of the adults used to come to our yard several times day leaving a trail of poop behind them. It was a mess! I would hear them quack, quack, quacking as they waddled onto our yard and I went out with a broom and chased them back home.

The neighbor's yard was slime everywhere and the little plastic pool they put up for them to swim and drink from was a stinking, filthy, black mess. Even she was glad to finally get rid of them all.
