Yes! I have six neutered/spayed indoor cats and one of them (male brown tabby) does this all the time, just about every day. Lately his mom (gray tabby) does it as well, usually in the wee hours of the night. It is so distinctive--it really does sound like someone calling out "HELLLLOOOO?" I've been on the phone before and people have heard his call and said, "Who's that in the background?"--thinking it was a person.

I think in our male tabby's case, it's his sonar. Like he's sending out a signal to our other cats about where he is because he wants to know where they are. (He's very companionable with our other cats.) When he really gets started up, I'll call out to him, "Cal, everyone's upstairs" or something along those lines. Sometimes that will send him off in pursuit of our cats.

In his mom's case, which has started up lately, it usually accompanies her dragging a toy to our bedroom or her nest, in which case, I think she wants to be praised for her "kill."

It's pretty darn adorable, whatever the reason!

Same with our Max, he does the from-deep-within-the-belly calls when he wants to know where Simba and Niku are, especially when he's in the mood to play. Niku does it when she brings one of her toys to me. Simba is very vocal, he'll announce to the world what he's about to do - jump, just go and catch Max, or check for pigeons sitting outside the window - with a series of low grunts.

Another very sweet thing about Max, if I can't find the other two, I just ask him where they are, and he'll look for them and lead me to their hiding place! Saves a lot of time, esp with Niku - she's a real ghost.

My Zoey will do this, except her having such a girlie meow, they just sound like pathetic howls. But she too will do it if she's got a toy, or can't find the kitten. Usually I just call to her, and she'll come running and meowing the whole way like "omg, omg, Im not alone!! yay mom!" haha, its kinda pathetic the way she gets sooo excited to discover Im in the living room. But a cute pathetic!

My cat Phoebe yowls and carries on as she is dragging a toy to me. But Annie has a long furry "worm" and when she gets going with that, it's an ungodly sound..like she's being tortured. The first time she did it, I ran to see what was happening, but now I'm used to it. Another reason why kitties are downstairs at night!!

My neutered male (orange and white) tabby does this. He used to have a stuffed chicken that he would carry around and yowl with (only at night) but only after everyone had gone to bed and the lights and TV were off. I called it his Chicken Cry. Chicken is long gone but he now has another stuffed toy that he will Chicken Cry with. He has been doing this for ten years. I think it's sweet.

My male kitty makes that sound to call the 2 girls when he doesn't know where they are. I practiced making the same sound and use it when I can't find them - they always come.
