Sherry, I think that refers to rootstock suckers. If you cut them off it's like pruning the rootstock suckering growth, which is invigorated and grows back more enthusiastically than before. I'm glad you like the sound of R. gallica 'Splendens': it is a handsome creature. Mine has started suckering (top growth) in the last year or two, and perhaps I'll be able to get a bit of it and plant it somewhere a bit more accessible than its current position. I have a notion that some of these Asian jungle giants are just not adapted to our garden conditions. I've failed with R. laevigata, and 'Cooper's Burmese' is puny. Cut it. Don't let it grow. Everyone's situation is different and what works for one person may not be practical for another. I tended the grounds of a couple of private plantations near Charleston for 20 years. My method for dealing with smilax was to cut it to the ground. The big tuber variety is the one I see most. Granted, it will grow back and will need to be cut again. I routinely police the landscaped areas, azalea beds, etc, for vines. I'm armed with clippers and a one-gallon sprayer of weed killer. If the vine has grown large, I cut it. If it's small, I zap it with weed killer. Learn to recognize the baby seedlings of the bad guys such as poison ivy, virginia creeper, smilax, wisteria and popcorn tree. Zap the seedlings. Don't let them live in your garden. It's not like they're an endangered species.

Thanks. Would you keep the Austrian roses or let them grow in Austria. Are they are cheap $rose? My wife says destroy them. But I don't want to. You are right about being hard to start. I've tried two years to get starts rooted and all have failed. I do see many plants coming up from roots, but there's no way to tell if they are the yellow or copper. I have seen both the copper & yellow on the same plant, but have seen some stems that have solid red flowers. Evidently red is not dominant color? Thanks for the help on these. What do you think--kill them or try take cuttings, or new plants that have come up and move them? And anyone know on the other rose, that acts more like a rose, except it seems to have adapted to solid shade and blooms almost continually--very fragrant. It's definitely not a hybrid-tea.
