Any one else--blizzard conditions?

Guess spring went thru when we were sleeping. We (northern tier) under blizzard condition. Claim we could get about 14 inches of snow, and Nodakgal about the same. Can we come south and live with you for awhile????

Changing appointments again, and canceling schools etc. Right now roads icy and advising no travel--again.

wow and here it has been in the 80's and bright sunny skies. I sure would lose a lot of plants I have been putting in the ground and all the trees are in bloom too.

I sure feel for you I am so glad to see this beautiful weather we are having. I have been Spring cleaning and have all the doors and windows open with a very nice breeze blowing through.

Yes you can come on down! (only if you will help with the Spring cleaning LOL)

Here in St. Paul we have rain and temperature around 40, but the rain is supposed to turn to snow tonight as temps drop. Will winter never end??

Could you list what parts you used? I was at lowes today and was looking in the pvc parts for something I could put together. A 4'' canister and caps w/ hose threads. I didn't find any thing at all like it. Lucky (or unlucky) you! I found a picture. It looks like it was taken with an old Barbie camera, so apologies for the quality. You can barely see the gray colored thread adaptor at the right side. You can see the kitty litter I used, charcoal, and Scotch brite pad I cut down to keep the filter innerds from flowing out into the hose. If you have trouble finding the thread adaptors to go from hose threads to the pipe thread, ask a clerk. I had to ask everywhere I went looking for them. It looks like I did not use any PVC pipe at all but only used pipe fittings. This experiment was from June of 2003 so I've forgotten a lot since then. If you want to get an idea of a ratio of charcoal to kitty litter (zeolite), crack open a filter from one of those water filters you put into the container in your fridge (like a Pur). I was surprised to find only a few specks of black charcoal inside. Most of it is zeolite. Still luckier YOU! I just went out and searched the archives of my garage and found the filter. Here's a modern picture. As you can see I did use 2-inch PVC pipe in the middle. This picture shows the threaded parts much better. It has to come apart somewhere to fill, or refill, with the filter medium. The gray nipple on the left side is straight pipe threads, not hose threads. The female hose fits on the male pipe threads okay (not great), but at the other end I wanted a better solution. It is a real pipe to hose connector. If I had it to do over again I would use 3-inch pipe for more filter volume and less water speed through the filter medium.

E, I use rebar in the same manner on the outside of the pot and not driven through the pot. I needed longer lengths and a 90 degree bend on the top to hook over the lip of the pot. I also put big rocks on the pot too. However the problem with that is if the plant still gets blown over the rocks can do some damage the plant as they tumble. They also cause collateral damage to your surrounding plants. I would use the precut 3/8 inch diameter rebar versus wooden dowels. You can find it at HD or L in the construction materials precut to 1, 1.5, 2, and 4 ft. Drive them into the ground with a sledge or a hammer. I say around a foot deep for large pots. less for smaller ones. Also, when there has been time I have gone out and laid down plants in a controlled manner when severe weather is coming (can you hear my wife yelling at me to get inside?). Maybe a few damaged leaves but all in all better than the alternative. I even did this once when an out of season winter storm came through a few years ago. I laid them down and covered with sheets, frost blankets, and then tarps to keep things dry. That worked too. You have to look at the type of wood your plant has. If its young it will bend to an extent and may pull out of the pot. Sometimes it will be distorted and you have to reshape it. If its mature and woody it you can stake the woody part and it will survive some pretty heavy stuff but may loose some green branches. Generally I try to secure the container versus the plant on younger plants. I have not seen a trunk snap in the wind before the pot would blow over and my experience has been the plant will actually pull out of the container before the trunk breaks. Almost like it self root pruned :). I think when you are at that point the only thing you can do is just wait and see what will be left when the storm is over and pick up the pieces. Also while we all like to line them up and make them orderly and neat in appearance most of my major damage has occurred from one plant falling on the other and not directly from the wind or from hitting the ground (which usually results in broken leaves and maybe some small branches). So your chain is only as strong as the weakest link. All in all they really are resiliant and come back after everything but freezes.

canuck, If you can grow them under some type of canopy, overhang, balcony to keep the rain off them your half way there. Then find yourself a fungicide, your choice whether organic or non organic for intermittent foliar applications you should do alright. I've used "Actinovate" the last two years as a fungicide with excellent results and it's organic. Ami

Mike, I did use simple floor lamps to boost the light and extend the daylight. I used CFL's in octopus type floor lamps so I could point the lights over specific plants.I plugged them into timers so they ran until about 11pm. They were only used on the higher light orchids or plants which were further away from the windows. My living room was large and quite drafty. I wasn't worried about air circulation as the whole area was totally open with high ceilings. Because I didn't have energy efficient windows (just single pane) the room would get quite cool at night. I put some of the warmer growers in a smaller room that I could close off from the rest of the house. I only put orchids which didn't like the cooler conditions of the living room. The small room was dark with only a small, north facing window. Again, I used octopus floor lamps and a few clip lamps which worked fine. I was able to bloom all my Phals and dends using the octopus lamps to grow out the spikes in a nice, even way. In this room I did use some little fans I bought for $4.00 each in Target. I still have them. They were great because I could stick them right in with the plants. I did run a inexpensive vaporizer (not humidifier) to add moisture to the dry air. Not sure it was necessary. I didn't go crazy. Most of my plants did fine in the living room with the cool conditions. I only moved the Phals into the small room when winter got really cold at night. Phals which weren't in spike stayed in the living room without problems. I'll look for some old photos to give you an idea what I'm talking about. What I found is that the orchids handled being in the house very well despite low humidity and cool conditions. I never lost one nor had problems. Once March rolled around, all the plants in the smaller room got moved to the living room to finish out the winter. Don't worry about it. It really wasn't a big deal and my plants did well. Jane

It was snowing buckets this morning, so I took the dogs out quick before it got any worse. Heavy, wet snow and the wind is howling. Now it's just raining, we're right at 32 so it will probably be a mess when it freezes. Please, Spring, come soon!!

Oh, I feel for you!
The temp right now is 72Â° and it has been a beautiful day.

In fact today is the first day of the Porch Sitting Season. Already have had 3 neighbors join me.

Jonquils in full bloom, Forsythia, Flowering crab apples also. My pear tree is budding and today the Goldfinches showed up.

My kind of weather.

We've had a very easy March so far. Lots of 40s and 50s. Haven't received anything for snow and March often brings a lot. Even April can have some snow too. IDK, this has been a pretty easy winter for me. And with the adverse stuff that spring brings, I'm not in too big a rush for it just yet! I think I saw a mosquito the other day!

We had a few inches of snow overnight, but the temperature is high enough that it's slowly melting. In Calgary, it's not unusual to have snow to the end of May, sometimes even in June. I've seen it snow here in July and August too....... And yet, people who have lived here their whole lives are surprised by it and complain about it every single year. It's nothing new.

Freezing rain and sleet here now and talks of 4"-6" of slushy snow overnight. Nothing cleans your car like slushy snow! Roads are bad now and should be very bad by morning. I don't have to go very far tomorrow at least so that's good.

Well, we got only about two inches. I was ready to go quilting at church when an out-of-town woman called and said it was terribly slippery. So quilting is cancelled for today.

It's snowing in Long Island, but not a blizzard. Just a gentle snowfall, maybe an inch accumulation. A blizzard is a combination of snow, temperature and wind speed. Hope this is winter's last blast. We had the same on Monday but nothing stuck. I am so ready for spring.

We have snow and a rain/sleet ice mixture under the snow. The roads are really bad. I decided to stay home from work as did most of us. The only people that went in at my office were those with 4 wheel drive and didn't have far to drive at that. Yuck. I cry uncle! Enough already! I want spring now...

A few years ago we rode up to Yellowstone and into Montana. I fell in love with Cooke City and told Jammer that I would like to live there for one year. He told me I'd never make it through the winter. I think he was right. I'll stay here where our temps have been in the 80's.

Been snowing here since last night. High winds too. I am so done with this weather! It's heavy and wet and sticks to the shovels and the dogs!!! I want to sit on my back deck and drink tea in the sun! I think we've had more than a foot of snow today.

They claim that we got 7 to 8 inches of precip. That would be part rain and then snow, but the wind was blowing so hard - my guess is that a lot of that snow may have landed on Connie's door step! Everything was blowing straight sideways and heading toward ND.

Right now it is sunny (very bright) and the road is almost clear already. Tonight we will get down to 4 "above" and I so much want winter to be over.

I am near Buffalo NY. It has snowed ALL day - we now have about 10 inches. I hope this doesn't interfere with my appointments for a facial & a massage tomorrow!

We have been getting pounded with rain. Im not complaining. I love the rain. A couple of tornados have hit down bout 30 miles west of us which is all but unheard of in Northern California. A little scary. Luckily very little damage and very rural area.

This is why we are waiting until May to head back to MN. I just hope our house doesn't float away there.
They are saying the Red River might break records...I feel bad for Fargo, and Grand Forks area.
