What kind of pen removes stains?

I bought a clorox bleach pen. My hubby has a ring around the neck area on a dress shirt. I don't think it is a clorox pen thingy I wanted...I wonder if the clorox will hurt David's dress shirt? I think what I wanted is another kind of stain remover pen...the name totally escaped me while in Wal-Mart and my sister was there with me griping about me wondering the isles so I just quit looking for it.

How in hades David gets a stain ring around the neck of his shirt is beyond me! David is a Data Engineer and doesn't work outside...where a suit and tie to work...not digging ditches! Where does the ring come from?? He says he doesn't sweat like a pig at work...just sits and writes data bases, writes web sites and other computer programming. I am stumped. But, what is the name of that other pen....I think it has "magic" in the name.

I am just an airhead today!

Are you thinking of the Tide-To-Go stain pen? It's about the size of a marker. Hear lots of great things about it, have one but haven't tried it yet.

I have used Tide to Go and the one made by Oxy Clean? I can't think of the name of course! Is David's shirt white? The clorox should not hurt it.

My FIL gets the same ring in his shirts as well. I used to starch them when I ironed for him and that did the trick with keeping those particular stains down.

Did you try baking soda? I've gotten Koolaid and grape juice out of white formica with if. Make a paste, spread on, and let it sit a bit before you scrub. Good luck. Or maybe alcohol? DD left a pen on the dryer that leaked. It took a few applications, but alcohol got most of the stain out. Just be careful--try alcohol on a part of the dresser that doesn't show, just to be sure that it won't damage the finish.

thx for all the ideas! I'm gonna give it a good regular cleaning later and the try the dawn - I have it here already. if that doesn't work I'll try the soda / vinegar one... if that fails i'll move on to - 'Drain the toilet, saturate a small towel with vinegar and lay that in the bowl so it stays in contact with the hard water stains. Cover that with saran wrap or other plastic to keep the vinegar soaked towel from drying' I don't have any plastic wrap here so will need to pick some up if I get to that plan... I have plunged the water out and filled it with vinegar and let set overnight before. It has cleaned most all of it - except that ring! of course, it is hard to get the vinegar up to the ring. I did put toilet paper on the ring and squirt it with vinegar... but I guess it would have dried quickly. so adding the plastic wrap sounds like it would be helpful. hopefully, within a few days that ring will be gone! oh yes, I also plan to look for that toto # in the tank when I go in to clean it later. it isn't like the toilet isn't clean... it's just that RING / discoloration that bugs the heck out of me. I've tried for some time now it just ignore the ring - I guess I've failed at that. After cleaning it, you want it to look clean too!

This thread opens with one of the most ludicrous yarns (no pun intended!) I've ever read on the internet. And I've been on the internet for a LONG time. A cup of alcohol, dissolved into even the small volume of water used in a front loader, is going to be reduced in concentration well below the threshold of flammability. EVEN if you just poured a cup of 91% isopropyl onto WET clothing, just before a spin cycle, I doubt the vapor pressure of the alcohol would ever get high enough to ignite if you placed a spark igniter IN the wash basin! This chart is for ethanol but it's probably similar for other simple alcohols. There's no way the concentration is such scenarios as the OPs was above 5% - or anywhere near it, So, the interior of the washing machine would have to have been >> 140F for spark ignition. https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/ethanol-water-d_989.html They are gone now (probably a good thing) but for this scenario to take place as described a MUCH more flammable substance had to be involved, and probably more of it than a cup. Obviously, based on the traits that can cause 'laundry fires', there's always a way to safely remove organic solvents that are flammable. Anything with a high enough vapor pressure to form explosive mixtures with water, can be removed by just letting the clothes air out, outside, for a couple sunny days in summer. If your functioning nose doesn't smell anything anymore and you don't feel any oiliness, there isn't enough there anymore to cause a problem after wet laundering. I myself have spilled 4 cycle gasoline on jeans, probably over 1 cup, and safely laundered them. Letting the gasoline dry out, and then use a hot water wash cycle, standard laundry detergent, and TSP (as described in other threads here) to make sure the oil is emulsified and removed. (Ammonia would probably work almost as well) I smelled them before drying. No hydrocarbon smell left at all. That being said, if I had some completely ridiculous scenario like a pair of jeans that had been soaked in kerosene - a fuel that stinks but is slower to evaporate - I'd probably just throw them out.

If you want it done right you need a restoration refinisher but they are not cheap. Don't make assumptions about the original finish.

Thanks! Yes, David's shirt is white. I hadn't thought of starching his shirts since they are the wrinkle free kind. But perhaps putting a bit in the collar will help. It wouldn't hurt having stiffer collars in his dress shirt anyway, starch would make it lay flatter.

What is it with that ring around a collar? That collar just lays against the skin...it's not like they are out slinging dirt or something...LOL

If you look closely on a Tide To Go stick, it say "Mot a pre-treater" meaning it's not for ground-in stains, just fresh ones. I personally use Dawn as my "pre-treat" on stained items. I then use either Gain or Tide liquid laundry detergent.

I haven't had good luck with Tide To Go stick when I spill on something I am wearing. I was thinking of trying the OxyClean pen as a prewash.

"Ring around the collar" is made up of skin oils and dead skin flakes that get ground into the fabric. Bleach does not remove oil and will ALWAYS damage fabric to some degree. Bleach can yellow synthetics even if they are in a blend.

A good grease cutting dish detergent with a little bit of scrubbing with a brush will get those stains out.

It would also help if you husband exfoliates his neck when he showers. Seriously. Get one of those exfoliating gloves and use it with regular bath soap or bath detergent.

Hum...David showers with one of those loofa(sp) sponges and those scrubby things you hang from a little loop of cord. I think he scrubs hard enough to remove skin cells and oil. It might just be the shirt although it was not a cheap one! All his other shirts never have stains on them and most of his shirts are white or off white. I have begun to suspect the material this shirt is made of.

I've always heard that hair shampoo does a great job on ring around the collar.

I use shampoo on ring around the collar. I also like to use Folex, which is a carpet cleaner, but it works well as a laundry spotter too.

The best pre wash stain remover I have is dawn liquid dish detergent. It even got out old oil stains!

I want to try shampoo and see what it does with a little brush. I still think it has to be the material this shirt is made out of. All the other dress shirts do NOT have ring around the collar stains, only this one!

It could be the material. I have had trouble with some white tee shirts (with flowers etc) because the quality of the material. Most shirts are made out of the US now and the cotton/polyester is a lower quality. It is not US grown and processed and in fact I found out I am allergic to some polyester because of the actual fabric used and since they do not list ingredients uses it is trial and error. My polyester blanket makes me cough and cough. Another one does not.

Yes Mariend, David's shirt is cotton/polyester...higher in cotton than polyester. All his dress shirts are that blend. It was bought at Dillards, washed just like the others. I can not remember the brand name right now but it is the only one of that brand. It just has to be the shirt. Oh well, he likes the way the other shirts fit better so I won't buy any more of the stained one.

I have t-shirts that have grease stains from frying something and the greaase splatters on the front. I might try some dawn dish soap and see if it comes out.
