An image I wanted to share

It may simply be because the location has meaning to me, but Sunday afternoon I was taking some snapshots while on a walk with my family and I sort of flippantly fired off a shot of this little area of open water along my driveway.

Later in the evening when I was viewing the images this one just struck me and I have been mesmerized by it since. It is likely not a great image through he eyes of a pro (perhaps anyone but me, who knows) but I will share it anyway.

Nice!! I really like those kinds of shots. Sometimes the meaning behind the picture is the beauty of it.

Also, the clouds look like water ripples, nice.

That looks like a bridge or walkover to the left of the picture, perhaps a drainage ditch of some sort?

Looks like Virginia Creeper ( Parthenocissus quinquefolia) by the leaves. Boston Ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata) has ivy shaped leaves. they're both nice, but invasive as hell. My neighbour planted some Virginia creeper on our shared fence about five years ago and for the past two years I've been trying to get rid of it on my side - it gets into my pots in the summer and generally takes over. A place up the street had to do some extensive work around the windows and roof a few years ago because some Boston Ivy had damaged the wood and water had been getting in. I wouldn't put it anywhere near a house - just in case. Take a look at Parthenocissus henryana, aka Silvervein Creeper. Supposedly it is not as invasive as the other two but it still has the beautiful fall colour and has nicer leaves during the summer (in my opinion anyway). It might not be hardy in an exposed location though - we're kind of at the northern end of its possible range :-( BP

denp3000, well that's no fun when you can't play with us. I am not the techy wizzard here. I have a new laptop with windows vista and it works, so is it a new feature. I also have these "fn" shortcut features. I hope someone comes to your rescue with a solution real quick. I know I swear all the internet fonts were a 6 that I could barely read. LOL Jean

Wow, thanks, you all! I posted again just to give the SAMA link to deedee :) liz, I had *no* visual art background in terms of actually making it -- I'm a longtime student of history of art and appreciator of art, but my talents lie more in music and words than visual art. I can't draw to save my life (my DD disagrees but she's my DD :)). I'm really happy that you say she has a cat expression (and that you noticed the ear hairs, littledog :) -- I always love those when I see them in domestic cats)-- it was a composite portrait, as I indicated, and I worked and reworked it so much. I won't feel that it's really delivered until I know whether Terri noticed her, etc...it's fine if she didn't, I just want to know one way or the other, iykwim. And I'm serious about the links; there are so many wonderful mosaic artists in this country, and they're extremely generous about sharing their knowledge and encouraging each other on, even wrt beginners. Very different from the professional worlds of music and theatre I was in, in that regard. I'm just glad that gardenweb led me, however indirectly, to find something I really love and with any luck can keep doing for a while to come (a trigger thumb operation would help, but I've got to save up for that)...

Excellent picture, I hope you dont mind me asking- what is the meaning behind this spot? Pictures with stories are awesome.

I have a very long driveway, 7/10 mile, that runs through a beautiful old growth stand of White Pines, then passes through a striking White Cedar swamp and up a sandy knoll through an old growth stand of upland hardwood tree species.

This little pool is where the swamp narrows, naturally, and passes under the road; where the road crosses the swamp. The swamp crossing is something you could probably never do today, but was part of a very old stagecoach road/state road/town road all sequentially abandoned and whose ownership was reverted back to abutting landowners many years ago making it private and retaining the integrity of the land.

The history of the land and the road and the constant battle we have with young beaver trying to plug the pipe, the song birds in spring and the dragonflies in summer, snakes and critters of all sorts in the water and my childrens excitement and wonder everytime we walk out for mail, here they crouch down and see what they can see.

My daughter has a fascination with "cold, cold water", it is her beverage of choice, and everytime we walk by she must dip her hand in to ascertain it's current temperature; she is most tickled when it is very cold. (she doesn't drink from here:))

It is for these reasons that this little spot is so special to me. I am hopelessly in love with nature and our natural world, so small things like this are very important to me.
