Building a house in winter: Paint or Stain??

Help!

We need advice on whether to use paint or stain.

We are building a new modular house in upstate NY (which is a few weeks behind schedule).

One issue we are having is what is best to use on the exterior: paint or stain.

It is going to be a very dark color-(black) and the contractor is attempting to apply it in freezing NY state winter temperatures.

Exterior material is a pine clapboard, which will be applied onsite after delivery and house assembly. We were planning on painting it a flat/satin black (it is a new england saltbox design).

The contractor wants to use a stain, saying that overall it's easier for him, can be applied in the winter and that the finish will "mellow" nicely. He says that using paint with such a dark color will show "chips" and cannot be easily touched up like stain.

I don't really want an option that gives me a "mellow" color, I want black. We want to use the lowest maintenance, longest lasting color retaining option, not the easiest one for him.

Note: contractor plans on pre-paint/stain the boards in our garage before they are hung on the house

Does anyone have any advice? any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks
