Family room- Painting Brick Fireplace and wood paneling

Hi,

This is my first time here. We will be moving into our first home in 2 weeks. The Family room was The house was built in 1959, but the Family room/ Den was built as an extension later on. It has this big old corner 'brick fireplace" and wood paneling on all the walls. ceiling is also dark wood. I want to paint the entire room in a goldish-khaki tone or something light and bright.

What do you suggest? Should I paint the ceiling too? or should I leave it as Dark wood?

Please help. I am going to try to post the pic. Hope I am able to do it.

NO to painting the fireplace. Look at it. See how deep the mortar joints are? Those joints will always be dark because they are recessed, so you will end up with a checkerboard grid that looks awful. Plus, it will be very tedious to paint those joints. Plus, plus, the joints are simply dust catchers. If you had normal joints, it would be different--you'd have a subtle variation in texture. This will look like a huge mistake. See the difference in this photo. Finally: That paneling is surely applied over wallboard. It probably pops off with little trouble leaving wallboard with a few small holes in it from the short paneling nails. Easy to patch and will look better than painted paneling (which, IMHO, is a very mobile home look).

It's a tough call whether or not to paint real wood paneling. I've seen beautiful paint transformations but painting will cover the wood grain. You may be able to whitewash it, in order to preserve the grain, but I've only seen that on vertical board paneling not 1980's large panels. I can't tell you how the outcome would look. This isn't at all what you asked about, but if you painted the walls a mid-tone shade, it would help the fireplace recede. I think it's a decent-looking fireplace that brings in a moody, cozy element with character that isn't in-your-face (except due to the strong contrast with the white walls). Have you considered painting the walls darker, which would help emphasize the built-ins as a focal point? Given that your furniture is dark, I think a medium color on the walls will bring a cohesive feeling to the space.

Google ”mudroom paneling ideas colors” and click on images. (I know you are not asking about a mudroom, but mudrooms are where people get creative with paint colors on paneling.) Most of what I saw were shades of white, cream, blue and green. You could add different color keywords to your search to try and find pictures with paint colors that you like. I am not fond of brown paint, but that’s just me. You could also google house exteriors with stone and wood siding, and see what colors people are painting on the outside to go with their stone. Add another keyword like ”light” or ”white” or ”brown” or ”beige” or ”green” to see pictures in the color family you are thinking about. I read an article about filling in the paneling grooves with drywall mud to create a smooth wall. I don’t know how well it works, but it would open up your color options, I think. I’m guessing that if your keep the grooves, your color options that look natural would be more limited.

I would paint the wood lighter, but think twice about painting the fireplace. I'd wait until the rest of the room is lightened up and then decide if you want to do the fireplace too. Lightening the rest of the room might make the fireplace pop and you might like it just as it is. A darker ceiling would feel more cavelike and cozy and as though the ceiling was lower. Depends on what kind of a feeling you are going for.

I'd paint or whitewash the panelling and cleaup the fireplace...not paint it.

Some folks had me paint their fireplace similar to yours. Painted the brick red and cut the grout joints in with grey. Imo, it looked real fake and kinda funky. Of course the paint job itself was class A-1! :-) They were happy with it so i guess that's all that mattered. You couldn't see it from my house!

If you decide to paint it, you might consider painting brick & grout joints all one color, monotone. Painting the grout joints to look like grout joints is a chore and is time consuming. It just doesn't cut it,imo.

Thanks for your suggestions. So, if I decide to have the bricks cleaned up, how do you suggest I do that? I will not be able to do any of it myself, so who do you recommend? By the way, I live in Los Angeles in case you know anyone around here.
