What brushes/rollers for painting trim/doorways?

Well, DH's uncle was suppose to be back to finish painting my LR trim and still hasn't. Everything's shoved into my laundry room for the time being. I'm just going to finish it myself because it's starting to get on my nerves looking at everything.

SO what type of brush do I need? Also the doorways. I'm assuming I would paint the trim and the doorway/jamb because that would still be considered part of the LR? The trim on the other sides (which would lead to my foyer/hall and other doorway would lead to kitchen) are different rooms. Hope this is making sense. Do you use a small roller for the door jamb or a brush? Don't really want to see brush marks. This should also be interesting around my window. Remember my walls are painted already.

I'm also just going to paint the rest of the house myself so this info will be helpful for that too. I just can't stand when someone commits to something and then doesn't project what they promise. I was under the impression this was going to be finished in one day since he was off. That one day was Nov 18th. Grr.. sorry to vent. I'm sure someone is thinking is he doing it for free? He said he would do it.... but we're going to pay him. I'm done venting now.

find a distributor in your area and get these brushes. IMO, the best out here. For your door jams you can use a small prodoo-z (wooster rollers), but the brushes should be just fine for all of your trim.

I would go with latex. I don't use much Pittsburgh, but I am sure they have a premium acrylic paint. You just need to be sure you buy their top line paint. I would use BIN on the sills or an acrylic bonding type primer. BIN would be safest because it sticks the best and will kill stains, but it stinks. A conditioner is a good idea if you are worried about the paint drying too fast. It depends on how fast you can move and how good of a painter you are. Dynaflex 230 is a fine choice for caulk. You do not want to use that for filling holes though. Caulk is only for filling gaps between two pieces of wood. For the holes, you can use any shrink free type of spackling, preferable something lightweight so that it sands easily, but definately do not use Red Devil and any type of product that says it is has a vinyl component. I just use the tinted drywall mud for filling holes. I leave a very small mound of it on top of the hole to account for the shrinking and then when dry, sand it flush. And, when I say small, I mean really small....so many DIY'ers when using this technique lay so much spackling on top of each nail hole that they end up having to sand forever. I don't think it is realistic to to just pick up a sprayer, practice on a few doors and then spray your trim with good results. The trick to really great spraywork is that you want to put the paint on heavy, but not so heavy that it runs and sags. Finding that zone can take years of practice. Some people can pick up a sprayer and learn it pretty quick though, but I just think this is a very small percentage of people. If you have natural great hand-eye coordination, then maybe you can do it. It's very hard to fix paint runs.

My DH uses a paint brush to paint doors, but I've seen others use a short napped small roller and then follow with a brush to even out the paint. Since the paint on a door is usually gloss or semi gloss, it's more difficult than painting a flat so you have to be careful the strokes are even and smooth as the gloss shows all the imperfections.

First of all, I don't use a bucket. :) I use a tray designed for 12" or 14" rollers. 9's and buckets are so dated, and a bucket is a production killer. Begin by rolling paint over the roller cover several times. Let it soak for a few minutes and roll more paint out of the holding tank and along the ridges of the tray. Let the paint soak in. It takes about 15 minutes for paint to saturate and fill the roller cover. When it's saturated, which means paint is setting on top of the nap, you're ready to paint. Lint free roller covers should include any roller cover designed for painting. But, unfortunately many manufacturers make rollers that drop lint during the entire job. White Dove is 99% lint free and so is the Wooster Pro Doo-Z. To limit paint lines, apply light pressure to roller cover when laying on and laying off. A roller doesn't require much pressure to release paint. I always taper the edge of roller covers prior to using them. Use scissors to snip a bevel along both edges. If you're right handed, keep the arm of the roller frame on the left unless rolling in a corner. If left handed, keep the arm of the frame on the right. Never switch (flip) the roller when laying off a wall. Doing so will reverse the nap and leave lap marks the width of the roller cover. When rolling with a pole, keep right hand at bottom of pole and rest left hand on top of pole to guide it vertically up and down the wall. Don't make X's, W's, Y's or Z's patterns when painting.

Wood paneling -- brush or roller?

We experimented with our wood paneling and found that a SW 6" blue knit 1/2" nap SW roller worked best for us. Using that roller, we did not have to play with the grooves, they filled right in. Sure you may have to push a little harder on the groove part, but you will have equal consistency everywhere. This was a small room and we did it in sections, so the small roller worked fine around windows, doors and trim. A larger room you may want to go with a larger roller........we were in no hurry. Quality was more important to us. One coat of primer and two top coats of Advance. We could have brushed it on, but brushing a wall just takes more time and doesn't seem to be quite as even. When we brushed the grooves first, we saw the outline of the brushed grooves when the paint dried. So the final coat we just rolled the whole wall and it looked even. ...very nice job!

Good for you!! You'll probably be the best painter!

If ya can't find Corona's (the brushes!!), get a nice Purdy XL Cub, Angled, 2" or 2.5".

These are great for trim/smaller areas. It has a "stub" handle, so it's easier for lotsa cutting-in work...like trims, bathrooms, etc....
* At our store, the 2" is $12.99. I've had mine for 3 yrs. now, and it's still like new. I've cleaned it a dozen times too!
* Get a good brush, and you'll have it forever...assuming good cleaning/storage practices. A brush-comb helps get more gunk out of the bristles too.
* When using, don't let paint get more than 1/2-way up the bristles. For long days of use, you may have to clean it once or twice...todays high-end acrylics have higher solids-content, and start setting-up faster, therefore drying into the upper bristles sooner. This makes it harder to cut fine lines if paint is building-up in the middle area.
* Use some fabric-softener & Dawn to clean. Rinse well!
* Dry the bristles on a clean dish-towel, straighten the tips out to a "knife" edge, and place in the original sleeve.

Add a little Latex-Xtender from XIM to the paint for longer working/leveling time. This stuff is neat!!

Whoa, lots of good info there! Thanks Faron! Never heard of paint extender. . . writing that down too.

I think my biggest problem is going to be the stubby side of the trim since the walls are painted.

Really don't feel like painting this weekend. I've been so busy decorating that I haven't done any Christmas shopping! Didn't bake any cookies. We're having a gathering at our house next weekend, then it's like Christmas! I can't believe how fast the time went this year.

I think many SW stores have it now. Other Hardware stores may as well. I brought it in this past spring...
