Buying a puppy from a backyard breeder who does not know what they are doing is as bad as purchasing a puppy from a puppy mill. If you are insisting on getting a pure bred, research the breed and know what you are up against as far as health issues go. I suggest you first check with a rescue group. there are alot of pups out there that need a home, and some of the rescue groups out there are good. Some are questionable. Check with a local vet, check with people at a dog park, go to a dog show...the more you look at yorkies and the more you learn about them, the more you will know what you are looking at.
Some red flags.
If a pet store can not or will not provide information about the breeder where they get their pets from.
If a breeder does not want you on the property - if they tell you that the directions are to ohard for most people or some other excuse and to meet at a local McDonalds or some other public place.
If a breeder does not want to give you any names or numbers of some of the people who have purchased puppies in the past.
You should be able to visit the parents of the pups, the place should be immaculate, you should ask if the puppies were born on the property, you should see other puppies there as well, not just the pup you are interested in. If you dont see any other dogs, leave.
The pups should have had their shots and been cleared by a vet, you should be able to get the vets name from the breeder and you should call the vet to make certain the pups are as the breeder says. The pups should be at least 2 months old, if not a bit older.
Do your homework, follow up. Dont take anything on face value - ask questions. Good luck

IMO, $950 is too much for a dog you don't have a history on. If you were buying from a breeder that was doing well at dog shows, then I'd say it's a starting price. Otherwise, I see puppies in my area (back yard breeders) going for around $500. You're paying a markup just because it's a pet store.

In addition to what mazer said, check out petfinder.com for local rescues in your area. Getting a dog that's a little older, and one that's been in a foster home, will let you know its health history and personality.

Don't believe the pet store. No reputable breeder that cared about their pups would sell to a pet store. CKC is meaningless. Yorkies have multiple health issues. Buy from a breeder that does testing. They well show you the test results. A reputable breeder will guarantee specific health issues and generally has a waiting list so they have no need to advertise. Re read above messages, good info.

Thank goodness you asked now before you bought a puppy!

Log onto the AKC website and look for Yorkshire Terrier. Then find the national club for the Yorkie. Use their link to get there. They will have member clubs around the country. Contact the local one to you and ask for members names that you can contact re: puppies. This will ensure you get a reputable breeder who has the breed and the puppy's best interest at heart.

Call a bunch of them. Interview them on the phone (they will be interviewing you too). Make a decision based upon who you like and trust. One of the advantages of buying from a quality breeder is that you will have a life long resource to ask questions and advice of for the life of your dog. Do not buy from someone who you don't feel comfortable with.

I've belonged to both the national club and local club of my breed for about 25 years. In our breed, we cannot sell to a pet store or sell a puppy before 10 weeks of age. That may vary with different breeds -- you can get a lot of information from both the national and local clubs.

As far as "pet" vs "show", every litter from a show breeder will have pet quality puppies in it. Breeders aim for show propects but they'd be lucky if 1/2 reached that potential. By getting a future champions pet quality brother or sister you'll know that your puppy was bred with quality and health in mind and bred to be a dog that your breeder can build their future on. The very small differences that make one dog a champion and his brother a pet are usually hard for the untrained eye to see.

Do your research about which health tests are expected in the breed (of the parents) then make sure yours were tested. You should see the mother and at least pictures of the father. You should see the pedigree. It won't mean much to you but at least look that the names in the pedigree aren't something like "Miss Suzie". They should be much longer and more formal.

Over my 30 years in my breed I have bought dogs from 3 different people -- all have become friends. All have been great resources over the life of the dogs. I firmly believe that this is one of the things you pay for when you pay for a purebred -- insist upon it.
