If you have cats, you’re going to have issues with your floors. Whether it’s carpeting that catches every single cat hair and thrown-up hairball, wood floors that stain if your cat pees or vomits on them or any number of other problems, keeping your floors in good shape is certainly a challenge. Here are some tips on getting the best flooring for cats: Tips to keep in mind when choosing flooring if you have cats: 1. Carpets and cats don’t mix If you have carpets, you already know why I’m recommending this. I don’t know about you, but my carpets have endured just about every kind of cat mess possible. Carpet is very difficult to clean, especially if your cat urinates on it, because the urine goes through all the layers of the carpet and sometimes even into the underlayment and floorboards beneath. This makes the smell almost impossible to remove. 2. Avoid porous flooring if you have cats Hardwood floors are beautiful, and they’re very popular for that reason. The trouble with hardwoods is that they are porous, and if a cat urinates or vomits on them, it will leave a stain that’s almost impossible to remove. Add to that the fact that if there are any gaps between the floorboards, the urine or vomit will sink into the cracks and stay there until you remove the flooring. 3. Use area rugs that can be easily washed If you need carpeting for noise abatement or comfort purposes, use area rugs that you can easily toss in the washing machine. Carpet tiles are another good option because you can easily replace soiled tiles before any liquids soak through to the flooring beneath. 4. Invest in litter and food mats If you don’t want your cats tracking kitty litter all over your house, invest in some good-size litter mats — at least a foot longer and 6 inches wider than your litter box. Also use inexpensive, easy-to-wash, 3-by-5-foot throw rugs as litter mats. Put mats under your cat’s food and water dishes to avoid problems from spills there, too. 5. Flat flooring is best if you have cats Any time you can use a flooring material that doesn’t have cracks or crevices, you’ll have better results. Some of those choices include poured concrete (this must be sealed, otherwise you’ll have a porous floor that will trap odors and liquids), terrazzo and even vinyl/linoleum. And the best flooring for cats is… 1. Bamboo This is a great choice for homes with cats. It’s stain-resistant, harder than the hardest of hardwoods and completely renewable. Okay, here is my take. We have a dog that just loves to pee over places where the previous owner's dog peed. We are in the process of changing all of our floors to wood laminate. They are regular old laminate. I would have liked to change it all to hardwood, but half the house was already done when we moved in. :( Oh well. Our pergo (the original kind) that was glued together works just great. If anything sits on it, we never get any bubbling spots. The newer pergo that snaps together lets the water underneath to sit (our humidifier dripped out one day). So, fyi there. I've found, however, that our dog won't pee on any of the wood. Just carpet. I don't know why that is. So, if you're going to do the whole laminate route. I don't know if your dog will do the same thing. But, you might find that your dog won't pee on your tile floor either. Might be a safe bet. Carpet is somewhat close in nature to grass. :) Our dog will go out of her way to find a rug to pee on rather than pee on the wood floor. You definitely need to kilz the whole area. Our floors (where the carpet is now gone) has been completely kilzed to cut lingering smells. I'd go with the laminate and have that glued together if possible. My mom redid her whole home (with laminate) and her dogs still pee all over. I swear to you. Every time I go over there, one of those dogs have peed somewhere before I got there and while I'm there. Every time. She has bubbling spots in a few areas. I've since found out that you can replace those spots and drop a new flooring part into it. But, who want's to do all that. At our home and at my mom's, we have baby gates. That seems to cut down on the peeing issue here, but not so much at my mom's. By nature, dogs are going to pee on softer surfaces as it mimics grass. They will always go back to the same places to pee, especially if there had been a previous dog there. Though we don't crate our dog, we do keep her in her dog bed with a gate in front of it. That dog bed is cushier than my bed. So, I don't feel too bad. Honestly, your dog is almost eight now. Unless you're on top of it and you're willing to crate her and watch her like a hawk, I don't think you're going to fix this. Your best bet is to replace that carpet with glued laminate or tile. Kilzing is a must, though. Do your best to watch her and just expect that you're going to be cleaning up pee probably forever. :( Sad to say, but it's most likely true. I'd expect though, that your dog will find something like a rug to pee on rather than your new floor. She is getting up in age too. She is already geriatric. I'd consider the tile to be a little too rough for her especially as her joints deteriorate. If it were me, I'd go with the glued laminate or even a wood look plank linoleum until you don't have to worry about it anymore... That's coming from someone who deals with smart and moronic dogs (which we have now). I worked for a vet's office for years and years during college and after. Backed out at the last minute on vet school and the whole bit. We saw this same problem with tons of dogs. Some dogs are just too stubborn/moronic to change and we are too soft heart-ed to really fix it. :)

Are you wanting help on removing the foam or just cleaning the floors? Putting some warm water on the foam may break it loose from the hardwood but you wouldn't want to let it soak very long and further damage the hardwood. If the hardwood had some type of sealant on it, the urine may have caused the sealant to break down and 'bond' to the foam. I'd call a hardwood refinishing business and ask for suggestions on removing the foam. Unfortunately, you may find those areas of hardwood that have stuck foam may be damaged to the point where the whole room will need to be refinished. If there's any exposed, unfinished, wood with urine odor/damage, then you'll need to put a sealant on the wood to keep your cat from smelling it. Clean what you can then let the wood dry thoroughly before doing any other work. I've had luck removing odors with Fizzion, or Jackson Galaxy's Cat Urine cleaner.
