We 'inherited' our daughter's dog a few months ago. I'm changing vets to one closer to our house. Her first appointment is tomorrow and the office visit is $47.00. I'm curious what the total bill will be when we walk out.

Huh? When my dogs had surgery or anything requiring anesthesia, they just did bloodwork. In fact the only time any of my dogs over the past 15 years had x-rays was just recently, when there was the possibility that one of them had a perforation or something else along her digestive tract. (she didn't.)

weed, this fee estimate doesn't include bloodwork because they did her bloodwork when I brought her in for her yearly exam.

I was told if the dental was scheduled within 30 days of her bloodwork testing the results could be used for the dental pre-op and I'd save money by not having to repeat the bloodwork testing.

I still don't understand the need for the x-ray, unless your dog has some issues that would warrant one. I hope Meghane chimes in.

As far as I know, she's got a clean bill of health as per her yearly exam. BTW, the estimated charge for the x-rays comes to $217.00.

As I recall, chihuahua's can have problems with anathesia and the vet is `making sure the heart/lunghhs can handle it. Poodles are even more susceptable to problems.

The added charges may have insurance premuims included.

That's more expensive than my personal dentist. The fee in my area for a dental with anesthesia is about $125, and if you have it done during a certain timeframe when they like to schedule it, and take advantage of their program it's a bit less. Bloodwork is extra. Extractions would be too. I had an elderly Schnauzer(12+ years) who had some extractions, bloodwork, and the cleaning and I am sure the bill wasn't over two hundred fifty. He even had a heart murmur.

Small world Mona. Murphie's previous vet was at "Small Creatures" in Lutz. Nice people. I live in Temple Terrace so I wanted one closer to our house.

Today will be her first visit with Dr. Weaver at Buster Brown's. I chose Buster Brown's because the previous owner of the office is a family friend and my neighbor, a retired vet says she's OK. We'll see.

If you want the cheapest vet, Dr T at Kindness Animal Hospital. Very low tech clinic, the vet is older, but very reasonably priced. No fancy lobby, no computer system, but you show up without making an appt, and the appt fee is 25 dollars

If you need shots and basic exams, shot clinics at ACT (Animal Coalition of Tampa) or HSTB (Humane Society) are the best. ACT also does dentals and other work, and very reasonably priced!

I really liked this Vet. The office is nothing fancy, but the staff was friendly and patient with Murphie (90 pound Lab who isn't the best behaved).

Office visit/vet exam was $47.00. Blood test for heartworm/lyme/and something else was $30.00. 6 months of Heartworm meds were $46.00.

I'm happy with that.

Oh that is fine! My husband is having a very serious surgery this week, so I am in no rush :)

I do x-rays if there is a heart murmur or some other abnormality on physical exam or in the history. We charge $85 for x-rays, $60 for pre-anesthetic bloodwork, $24 for a U/A as part of the general health screen, $85 for the dental, $5-50 per extraction depending on how long/difficult the extraction is, $14 for pain injection, about $20-30 for pain meds to go home, and about $30 for antibiotics if needed. So the total is $169 (no rads, no extractions) to about $400. I've done full mouth extractions for cats with stomatitis for total around $650.

I just found one of Rusty's bills for August, which was for a tooth extraction (grrr I just noticed they mixed it up and put it under Rusty - I'll have to get that corrected).

But the total came to 663.29.. That included a cleaning as well. The extract was $45.. The biggest expense was the anethesia (Rusty is about 100 lbs).

Meghane, I know you are past the usual age for it, but have you ever considered letting one of us adopt you? I have a spare room!
